I have tried to design my perennial gardens after English gardens, adjusting for our growing zone 5. So many people love seeing them and it is a joy to share those moments of beauty and delights with others. I get many of my spring flowering heirloom bulbs, with British origins, from a small Michigan (upper midwest state) grower, Old House Gardens dot com. You would enjoy reading the origin and history snippets about each bulb. Also they have excellent cultivation and growing habits info.

Hi Roseanne! Your callas are gorgeous! Hats off to you for digging them up every year! I had some that I planted for five years in a row, same way digging them up every fall, but one early frost did the trick. And I have up after that. I so love them though.

This was so refreshing to watch! It was 97 deg F today in my part of East TN. Lawns are getting crispy! The calla lilies are stately and provide such wonderful contrast with other plants. And those two peonies!!!

THAT is a lot of fall digging. Just breathtaking. I have not used them in the landscape like that but might try it after seeing how gorgeous yours look. Delphiniums are the queen of summer flowers in my opinion. Always so stunning.

You have a beautiful garden. I also love calla lilies. I live in zone 6b. I am able to grow them here without digging them in the fall. So not all are limited to zone 8. Just in case someone would like to try them in their garden. Sheila in Kentucky.

Wonderful tour, Rosanne! I've been adding way more native perennial plants and shrubs in my garden in Massachusetts, and lightening up on just planting ornamentals. Also, leaving leaf litter over winter. Come the following late spring, I'm able to crumble the leaves with my gloved hands and work into the soil. Been doing that for some years and it has made an incredible difference. Occasionally use only a natural, undyed composted mulch which I work into the soil as well -- so much healthier than leaving that layer on top, and to me looks aesthetically much more natural. I have no irrigation for anything (including lawn), and everything has been thriving once established.

such a nice garden. I moved a few months ago and have been battling ground elder, stinging nettles, lili of the valley, houtuynia and zantedeschia, all these had overtaken the garden, i like the callas only have the white ones and one of two or three in a group is fine. but half of the backgarden is a bit much, and I found they're very very deep, I try to dig them up, but still some peek up. Love hosta's and ferns and hope to get a nice northfacing cottage garden one day ;-)

Thank you. Glad you like the garden! I do agree, too much of anything can be (visually) overwhelming. Taking back a garden that's become overgrown sounds like quite a task. You must be in a very different climate?

I've never tried Cala lilies, and didn't know any of the stats on them before watching your video. They are very elegant and beautiful, both the blooms and the foliage. I'm not sure I'd have the gumption to dig up 100+ of them every fall, though. LOL! Your keep a very pretty garden. Thanks for sharing a tour of it!

So beautiful, the colors and shapes are gorgeous! I love the moss between the stepping stones, its so beautiful! The Callas are so pretty.....I dig mine up in the fall too, but they always get moldy over winter :( I'm doing something wrong I guess

Beautiful garden Rosanne, you've given me some great ideas for relocating some of my callas. I was noticing the supports you are using for the delphinium, is that something you've constructed? They seem less obtrusive than others I've seen, if you did build them, what is it that you are using for the rings? I love delphiniums but don't want to use massive supports to keep them upright! Maybe a support tutorial in the future if you have others you would like to share🤞 Wonderful video, l look forward to the next one. Thank you

As to our delphinium supports, we purchased 10"rings with little clips almost 10 years ago. We use our own poles of all varying heights, depending on the plant. We tried buying more rings, but could not find them anywhere. It's a shame. But I keep looking. Otherwise, I use three poles and tie loops of string around the poles. The effect is the same, but it's not as easy as using the little clips. Yours in gardening. Rosanne

Hello from The Black Sea coast! I adore Calla flowers and you have such tender colours! Perfect! The only thing which I felt doubtful about was the bench: it's very beautiful and stylish, but is it comfy? I'd probably put wood top and couple of cushions:-) I must confess the bulbs I planted this year didn't do so well (we blame our stony earth). I wonder what depth of ground they need, is it possible to keep them inside the house in a pot? Your plants and walks look just SUPERB!

Greetings to the Black Sea coast! I'm happy to hear you liked my Callas, but sorry to hear about your bulbs. I'm not sure how your stony earth holds water, but they do like moisture. Do catch my video on Planting Calla Lilies. I have not ever kept them inside the house in a pot, but I don't see why that wouldn't work. I do believe they need to rest, or go dormant, however. As to the bench, it certainly is hard, but it is sooo deliciously cool in the summer when I want to take a garden break. It's like air conditioning on your body. The stone is also so beautiful, I'd hate to cover it up. But, for parties, I agree cushions would be nice. 😊

Hi Allyson, I'm so glad that you enjoyed the tour! For most of our entire yard, we have used Sandy Creek Sandstone (such as the steps and the flagstone areas). However, we used Chilton (which is a limestone) for the edging. It matches quite well with the Sandstone. We purchased "edgers", which are about about 4" by 4" by 12", from our local landscape and masonry supply store. The lengths do vary (some are 8" 10", 12"), so it makes doing curves easier. My husband then buried them half-way (2") into the ground. To define the beds, we first used landscape paint in a spray can. We have a Stone Crop Yellow Sedum growing in the corner of the steps. They are very drought tolerant. Thanks for watching and all the best in gardening!

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed the tour. Regarding your question, that's a tough one. I've heard from someone in Zone 6 that says she leaves hers in the ground (buried deep) and they overwinter fine. Then, I heard form someone in Zone 7 that said she needs to dig hers up. Maybe you could try with just one bulb, mark where it is and see what happens? I've missed some bulbs in the fall and found big mushy white residue in the spring. You'll know right away if the bulb (yes, rhizome) is viable. All the best with your decision!

Your garden is beautiful. You would have to have a lot of money to have a garden like yours.

That's not true. People tell me the same thing, but the truth is I'm broke most of the time LOL....I have many gardens on my property and I have grown most of my garden flowers and plants from seed. Yes it takes a few years longer than buying full-size nursery plants but it's worth it!

I bought some Irish moss and planted some. How many inches of soil (depth) does it need to grow? I’m trialing a few in an area where there isn’t much depth and saving most of my plants for the walkway to my gazebo where there is a regular depth of soil (and a lot of ground cover already). I’m also going to look for calla lilies after seeing them in your garden. How gently regal they look among your other plants. I’ve never before bothered with anything that needs lifting (like dahlias) but this video convinced me!

Hi Debbie. Irish Moss should only need about two to three inches of soil. If you dig up a healthy piece as I did in my Irish Moss video (be sure to watch if you haven't already), the roots are about two inches. That is still pretty shallow. I'm glad to hear you might be trying out Calla Lilies. They are indeed regal, but comfortable around the native plants. All the best on both fronts! Rosanne

The hidcote lavender border is stressed in parts... the new young plants despite looking well and having good roots, are now dying off, giving them extra tlc, if you have any thoughts/ suggestions, would appreciate... have added a white star jasmine to the family, want it with my struggling heritage clematis: Violette, a pure and simple flower head in deepest purple...she is quite a star herself, but is a victim to the wind ... All good wishes ~

Most lavenders don't do well in our growing zone (USDA 4), so I'm afraid I have little advice other than the tlc, watching moisture levels. All the best with your garden. Rosanne

@@RosannesGarden~ thank you for taking the time to respond: ) I find the beauty in plants / flowers to be healing... time evaporates... and despite my good intentions, don't achieve a quarter of what needs doing ( have put in requests for more energy and stamina )... my garden is lovely, thankyou( for me) yet tiny...have many containers as they are easier for me to access, though high maintenance, similar to your lifting the calla ' s ... enjoying again your vlog, and it is how you have planned your garden, in so many ways... the photography is superb... particular favourite is the bee enjoying high tea with the white shrub roses ~

Hi from Canada. Thanks for the video. I started growing Calla Lily in my garden because of this video. Now I have several calla lilies from my original plant. but only two of them flowered. They are in full sun. They have green and white leaves and color deep orange flower that change tone with time. Can you tell how cann I make all my calla to bloom?

Hi Rosa. I'm really not sure, but I would try fertilizing them a lot this summer, so the bulbs store the energy for next summer's blooms. I just sprinkle the recommended amount around ghe based of the plant. They may still bloom this year. I use a balanced organic granular fertilizer like Dr Earth 4-5-4. Good luck! 🌷

Is the stone bench hot? I know it's under your tree but does it absorb heat a lot? I ask because I went to a beautiful park recently that had concrete benches under the shade but it was like lava when I sat down!

That's such a great question. Just the opposite, the bench is always cool. We often take gardening breaks and sit on the bench on hot summer days. It's a real treat to be treated to something cool.

Oh my, Rosanne, you've to dig them up! I live in zone 8 and can leave them in the garden. Covered like my Gunnera, deep in the soil. Love them planted so intense in your garden. Have you ever hear of Dutch Wave gardens? Piet Oudolf, the one who made the Ground Zero garden in NY and the High Line is part of it. It's denser than your garden, logical in zone 8, but very much the same principle. We have had a hot spring and now a wet Juli, my garden turned into a jungle. But a Dutch Wave jungle ;>D

Hi! You know, I don't really mind digging up all those rhizomes. It signals the end of a gardening season and the beginning of a short break for the holidays and then back to planning next year's garden. I have heard of Piet Oudolf and in fact saw a documentary about him at our local arboretum. But, I have not heard of Dutch Wave gardens. I will look it up shortly! Can you do a video on caring for calls lillies? I live in a zone 7b with clay soil, I planted callalies in May put in just over a month the leaves started to yellow one leave at a time. I’m not sure if I under watered them. And that’s why they didn’t thrive. Anyways after the yellowing there are no leaves left

Hi, I'm in Minneapolis, MN, USDA Zone 4. I have it on the opening shot, but it is a bit muted and easy to miss. Sorry about that. The white Callas were a gift and the red ones I purchased from McClure and Zimmerman. I believe in getting good quality bulbs. I plant them in early May or late April, depending on the spring. Great question. First of all, I dead head them regularly so the weight of the spent flower does not pull the plant over. Secondly, I do need to support some of the white Callas as they mature. The red Callas (Hot Cherry) do not need staking or supports as they are shorter by nature. The more sun they get, the less I need to support them.

Hi, Rosanne!! I have found 2 white calla lilies for only $2 each in a big box store. They are all flopped over and have lost their vivid color. What would you do if you found some like these

Hi Allyson! Because I have not similar experience, I'm a little out of my league here, but I'll give it a try. If you mean the leaves (versus flowers) are all flopped over and maybe turning yellow, I'd say the plant is done for the season, and is ready to go dormant. Once the leaves are totally brown, I'd dig up the rhizome and store it for a few months (per my winter care video). Or, keep them in the pot and store the pot in a cool dark place for a few months. Calla Lilies re so beautiful. Good luck! 🌿

Beautiful garden. But what’s confusing to me is how you have plants next to one another which have completely different light and moisture requirements. Callas (sun) next to hostas (shade). Daylilies (sun and dry) next to astilbes (shade and moist). Clearly it has been working for you, but… how?

Thank you! What a great question! I would say that most plants can tolerate a range of conditions, which is what I take advantage of. For example, I have quite a few hosta that are in full sun. As long as they get enough water, they seem to do fine. Of course, the extreme heat we had in May did crisp some of the leaves. Also, in the case of the astilbes and daylilies, the astilbe were actually on the north and east side of a small ornamental tree, so they did get shade. Immediately to the east and south, were the daylilies, which receive quite a bit more sun. The daylilies seem to like the moisture too. I guess it's the idea of micro-climates in that plants quite close to each other can actually have different environments. Not everything works out, but I do push the boundaries. It's surprising what actually works. My most unusual plant story is the sun-loving Golden Glow Rudbeckia that self-seeded (with the help of birds) in a very shady area of my side-yard garden. It seems to like it there, but I never would have intentionally planted it in the shade. Goes to show.... Happy gardening! 🌺🌿🌹

@@kathymiller9916 You may be right about this too! From the online pictures, the yellow looks a little bright, versus the almost deep brown-yellow of mine. But, most of my pictures have the flowers look bright yellow too. Otherwise, they sure look like the same plant. So, I'm cautiously calling them Mary Todd 😀. This is great. I sincerely thank you. @@RosannesGarden I've grown one in my yard and was comparing your video to what I remembered about the flower. I thought a lot of the online photos looked too bright and yellow. To my eye it's a rich gold ... with that darker tinge to it. I believe it's a tetraploid and the flowers have a lot of substance.

I don't know about seeds, but I purchased my Hot Cherry bulbs (technically rhizomes) from an online store called McClure and Zimmerman. They had a reasonable selection at the time. Good luck!
