I live in zone 6.(not sure a or b). I haven't been gardening but a couple years. I've only tried the Calla Lily once and killed it, lol. Question: are there different types to better withstand a zone 6? I just purchased one to see if I can actually be successful this time. The tag on the plant says the hardiness is only 30°-20°. Therefore I don't think they could survive a winter in a zone 6, even though they are mild winters compared. Rarely does the temps reach 20 and below and stay that temp for a long period of time. They are a gorgeous plant and I would love to have a huge drift of them, if I knew they could withstand a zone 6.

Hi Janey, Calla lillies give the garden a lovely sculptural feel. I have many including lemon, warm orange to red, and pure white. Easy to grow and divide and keep neat and tidy. They will suit that part of your garden as a nice big clump and (accentuate your outdoor furniture). Love the giant variety.....sounds great! Enjoy, Jo.

Your recent weather seems to be like our normal crazy North Texas weather. So sorry you are having to deal with it and worry about that beautiful oak tree and flooding. Praying it ends soon for you. Love your plan for your shade area with that beautiful bench and the blue and white pots. I collect those and they add so much in the garden, especially with those amazing white plantings you plan on doing. Thank you for sharing so much about calla Lillies. My husband planted up our front door pots last year with calla Lillies and we had such a good, long season with them, I'm going to have him plant them again. I've never seen those huge calla lillies before. I may have to try them somewhere also. Excited to see how huge they get. Stay safe and dry!

Zantedeschia aethiopica are actually an Arum lily, I believe, which is why the growth habit is a bit different. They have a more flat and open flower, as opposed to their smaller friends, the Calla, which can also have spotted leaves.

If that's a Live oak, they are used to high winds and even hurricanes. Of course, they aren't totally hurricane proof, but, they are tough. It takes alot to uproot them. I used to be in a cool climate, but, now, it's been in the 90'sF or high 80's here. And, calla Lilies overwinter in the ground in zone 6a where I am, and others here have said they don't have to dig theirs up either in zone 6b, although the labels say zone 8 hardy. I started out with 3 or 5 roots, and now I have so many I am not sure how many I have. Mine are pink and a coral color. Nice idea about trying to get early blooms. But, my last frost is in May, sometimes as late as the 3rd week of May, and my greenhouse can get too hot for some plants. I can only keep certain plants alive in it. I need to get a roof vent installed in it. Now, I wonder if maybe dahlia's can overwinter here without being dug up too?

@@DigPlantWaterRepeat Happy you like it! I was thinking of flowers (like black eyed Susan or yellow dahlias) but I forgot about the Shade. Maybe a climbing rose? David Austin 'the pelgrim' is a yellow rose that seems to do fine in Shade. Or maybe a variegated kiwi? ( not yellow, but beautiful, does ok in zone 9, part Shade, variegated with White and pink leaves^^) but it's your garden, not mine, do as you please 😅

Do the rhizomes expand and grow (double in size) a lot? I grew Canna Lilies for the first time last summer, had to dig them up due to my colder zone, and wow, they tripled in size, ginormous! So had to break them in multiples for storage.

is there a way to calculate the effect of growing plants in an unheated greenhouse or a glassed-in porch on their hardiness zone? for instance, I am in zone 5. if I try to grow callas or other tender bulbs in an unheated greenhouse, will the protection of the glass allow me to grow a camellia, or a calla? If so, how many zones higher will be safe? It seems to me that there must be a formula that I can use to figure out what plants would work.

I didn’t know calla lilies could get that big! Two years ago I started mine directly in the ground and it did take a little while to get going but once it was established it thrived!! Last year I started them indoors and then transplanted them into containers and they struggled. Barely got any blooms. Do you know what may have went wrong? I’ve heard that they like to be slightly root bound so maybe when I transplanted them into a bigger container they didn’t like it as well? But that still doesn’t make sense why they did so good in the ground because they have tons of space in the ground!
