JULIUS NYERERE: The Founding Father of TANZANIA | African Biographics

Mwalimu Julius Nyere. Nyerere was the first prime minister of independent Tanganyika (1961), who later became the first president of the new state of Tanzania (1964) after the merging of tanganyika and zanzibar.
Julius Nyerere is also known as one of the main thinkers and creators of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), together with Kwame Nkrumah and both of them were the major force behind the formation of Organization of African Unity (now the African Union).
In this video we look at the life-story of one of Africa’s most formidable forces. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.

One thing in my opinion that he achieved 100% is uniting over 120 tribes of Tanzania under one umbrella of Swahili Language thus effectively erasing tribalism as a major problem for Tanzanians. It's truly not a noticeable issue for us most Tanzanians.

He, along with Sankara and Mandela, will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greatest African leaders of the 20th century, if not all time. I feel his application of socialism over emphasized agrarianism and he needed to engage in industrialization efforts, as his collective farm policy was undoubtedly a failure, but he did do what many other leaders could not: establish a functioning and stable state with a high level of human development.

But other African socialist leaders did 'de-emphasize agriculture', with even worse effects. Eg. Kwame Nkrumah. In fact, this was the norm: overtaxing the politically unorganized peasantry to promote higher standards in cities (mainly capitals). If anything, Nyerere, imo, got as close to a decent government programme as anyone (I think even Rene Dumont praised him, and he had few words of praise for kost African governments).

I've been living in Tanzania for 5 years now, I am married to a Tanzanian, and I think that this video is incredibly well-done, and very balanced. One amazing accomplishment of Nyerere that I would add was his adoption of Swahili as the national language. Tribal concerns dominate politics in Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia... the list goes on. But this is not the case in Tanzania. It was a real stroke of genius that Nyerere made Swahili the national language. It was far easier for Africans to learn an African language than it was for them to learn English or French (the national languages in other African nations). Since the vast majority of Tanzanians quickly and thoroughly learned Swahili as the national language, they were able to communicate, intermarry, and do business with each other. This has led to a wonderful peace and harmony all over Tanzania, and has made politics a far less tribal affair. They have avoided any tribal warfare, as well.

Ultimately his ideas could not work in the real world. I respect him for his single-minded-ness, for his role the fight against colonialism and taking the very rare decision to step down from office peacefully and enjoy his retirement.

Nyerere may have been the most independent and steadfast of Africa's post-independence leaders, but colonialism still laid its mark on him--by teaching him British forms of socialism, instead of the balanced capitalism that nations like Taiwan and Malaysia used to become modern economic powers. A sympathetic British civil servant who worked for Tanzania in the '70s, Andrew Coulson, wrote about how the bureaucracy of socialism ultimately took power away from Nyerere--shutting down villages who were implementing the Ujamaa vision independently, and causing much of the suffering of the forced village schemes. He wanted to help the people, but his British socialist and American donor friends could only tell him how to impose from the top. Still, he represents what Africa can be, now that we know new things about economics, and have better ways of listening to the people. For Tanzania's new leaders, 60 years of peace is a great foundation on which to build a new economic power.

Ummm…. I dunnno. I’ve lived in Kenya and have family in Tanzania. Though the tanzania I found isn’t Nyerere’s, it is the result of it. Education there isn’t (wasn’t, it improved a lot under early Magufuli) all that great. Their decision to ditch English has somewhat held them back on the world stage. They definitely could have had English and Swahili both be official languages and be much better off now. However all that said, I think their prospects are some of the best in Africa. What I saw there truly impressed me.

His Socialism policies failed because: 1. a lot failed to understand how important it was to adopt it. 2. All European capitalism economies inflicted so many sanctions that crippled the Tanzanian economy. 3. With sanctions, it was important have a smooth transition from British capitalism system to socialism he wanted. They did this to make sure the transition can never happen. Remember a bit change like this requires time and fading from one system to another, rather than switching. This man was smart but he lacked support and his hands were tight. these are the roots of his socialism failure.

Unfortunally bc of socialist economy he left Tanzania sitll poor country but he had good intensions , socialism ofthen seems better than capitalism at first butwell it ends as it ends, Poland is good example , even with massivly corrupted govermanets (were taking about Miliards of Złoty defrauded over last 30 years) , that care more about their own pockets , and foregin countries that help them keep those pockets full of stolen money , even with gigant missmanagment and stuff like 2 milion pp emigrating to look for better life , even with all of dat (and more) the country still develops much faster than during communism era. Expecially that Nerere's succesors have fixed that problem. Btw I heard in Polish documentary that Nyerere is named as saint and that Vatican started his cannonization in 2006 , is that true ?

I always find it interesting socialist nations seem to high literature rate of there populations. On the flip side normally this followed by freedom of Press. In this situation I can see he gave it a red hot got to make work. Sad, it would have awesome if it had worked and maintained individual rights.

He was far from perfect, and was against women having access to contraceptives. He described women wanting to control their own reproductive rights as 'lazy'. People forget that part.

I think he was a great leader with good intentions and if he wasn't socialist, Tanzania would probably be one of the wealthiest country in Africa and even in the world today. I understand why he found capitalism so repugnant. From is point of view it was part of the system that had oppressed Africa for so long a time. It was an instrument of oppression. An instrument of oppression could possibly not bring any good, he must have thought. But I think he was wrong in his analysis of capitalism. Capitalism is a very effective tool for creating wealth. But just like any other tool, it can be abused. The fact that a kitchen knife can be used to commit murder does not mean you should use a ladle to cut vegetables. Socialism as an economic system always leads to poverty and it never works just like how it is ineffective to use a ladle to cut vegetables.

He is too ambitious with poor leadership. He shouldn’t also intervene in Ugandans affairs.

Actually his intervention in Uganda affairs helped Uganda get rid of Amin the tyrant though Obote his friend then exiled in Tanzania was able to bounce back into power and M7 a then rebel leader found it easier to fight Obote gov't and finally dislodge it something he had failed to achieve under Amin.
