“Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.” ― Søren Kierkegaard

MiltonD he mentions Kierkegaard 0:35
Julian saved my a life. He has no clue. I was 18 coming out of foster homes, nowhere to turn but to him. He had a meeting with his housemates and they all agreed to let me move in. He introduced me to my first thrift store, Purple Heart and contemporary artist friends which was my first introduction into that world coming from only the classics . The rest is history.
I believe the soul is a mirror and it doesn’t suffer. It stays clean while the suffering is just a reflection of life
A lot of people say Schnabel is a better film maker than painter and that's because film making is a collaborative effort. Schnabel as a painter is not as great as he thinks he is but not as bad his worst critics.
I adore Julian. His work has a kind of chaotic perfection that inspires emotional response. If you really look... you will feel. Perfect.
I like his paintings. He is not afraid to use unusual materials and to branch out from making art that people expect artists to make.
I WANT that studio!!
contemporary art was, honestly, people who were trying too hard. it doesn't last. van gogh was brilliant because people were able to read his stories. this looks like some misguided, late 20th century preschool child colouring book. also using other images are just lazy and he seems very arrogant and full of himself.
True pleasure to watch it!! On 4:10 I realized that the video is about legendary Julian Schnabel!!))) Amazing!!

I'm an Architect & amateur painter, and what I've come to realize in my 53 years, is that abstract art, such as the paintings in this video, are "objectively un-judgeable" . . . meaning there is no universal "right vs wrong", there is no "this is GREAT, and that SUCKS" in an objective analysis, now "subjective analysis"? yes ! of course, we all have opinions, as to which pieces of art speak to our hearts, what pleases our eyes, what stimulates our brain (what will we buy$) and we are also capable of having an opinion about a piece which does not do those things for us.

Abstract art is just objectively superior, there's nothing unjudgeable. The better you judge the clearer you will see and come to similar conclusions with who can do it too.

We artist have been schooled in the notion that art is the artist and the artist is art and one art is about the self of the artist. Is this narcissim? Perhaps. Then so be it until new schools come along.

IMHO...A fantastic film maker, but as a painter...meh. He was one of the giants of the NY art world in the 1980s, but I have a sense his work won't hold its current place over time. I think Francisco Clemente may be riding in the same boat. On the other hand, Basquiat's work will only gain importance as will the larger works of Keith Haring.

"Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom" is a quote from Kierkegaard spoken as if it were his own. Much like inserting famous artist or writer's names into his work it is a sign of pretension and bluster. I do like a lot of his paintings, it's too bad he can't let them live without his twaddle

Freedom in Art is posible, but the idea of a aesthetic, stolen images, mixed with wall patterms and holes, in words of Schnabel, sound to pretend being highly decorative, however he practice certain liberty in his work proccess, freedom is no a matter of emptiness, or to reach it by accident, freedom is another level, you need to focus and be progressive in the attempt. it requires patient, no because a woman is pregnant 1 day she will be a mother, and this is just a physical experience, Dear friend i guess Kierkegaard is talking about another meaning, (anxiety is the dizzeness of freedom, sound nice) it is no the wright word to enter into this space.

JULIAN SCHNABEL IS A NEW YORK ARTIST.
I enjoy the bravado and the bigger than life Americanism of Julian but: 1/ He should pay more homage to Robert Rauschenberg's greatness than he is projecting. 2/ The action painting looks awkward. 3/ Incredible to think at times you may be looking at a David Salle work viewing this body of work. (ouch!)

Art market is truly corrupt . They are money makers with a deep understanding of the current market not genuwine and authentic Artists
Meine Bilder will niemand kaufen :-/

I also don't care as to how his personality or arrogance or any of that BS matters at all. The work is what I care about.
