Julian Assange Talks Chelsea Manning and the Media in Rare Interview

In the buildup to Julian Assange's run for the Australian senate, VICE was invited to the Ecuadorian embassy in London for a rare in-person interview. Our visit coincided with the conviction of Chelsea (then Bradley) Manning, the young US Army private whose alleged espionage put WikiLeaks on the map. Assange spoke to us about political payback, his plans for freeing the most famous whistle-blower in history, and why the world needs a WikiLeaks political party.

@Bob 1 Rape allegations were dropped few times, there are evidences that the only allegations that the women involved wanted to file were related to STI but police persuaded them to change their declarations. The case itself was dropped at least twice by Swedish prosecutors as luck of evidences.Very fishy case ….also your determination to denigrate this person is quite fishy.... He created that website so brave whistle-blowers can almost safely and without fear of severe prosecution can whistle blow the crimes.

    • I want Australian political legal sheep to step up and protect and represent this Australian citizen. You have been silent and invisible in this process. • Julian Assange is a reporter of political transparency. Either you stand with him or you will be seen in history as American partners of criminality and culpability. To stand by and not take action in supporting his case is a disgraceful act of cowardism. Assange is innocent. • Assange disclosed the video of innocent men and children injured and killed by trigger happy American helicopter pilots laughing as they gunned down townfolk. • Assange disclosed the truth about Hilary Clinton and the needless massacre at Bengazii. • And...Assange disclosed who, when, what, where and why members of past and present White House Administration also, the American and European military industrial complex are promoting and advancing war efforts for their own financial gains. Power, Money Greed. The American citizen's tax base has funded projects both military and personal resulting in profiteering...stealing directly from the American people. This is why they what to extrdict any jail (kill) Julian Assange. He is the man who knew too much and came to tell the world the truth. This is why they concocted a false rape charge against Assange. Both women said it was the police who propagated this lie. The FBI used, as their 'credible' main witness, a known pedophile with a criminal background who was given immunity, if he testified against Assange. The Icelandic witness has since withdrawn his testimony stating that he had lied. There is no case! And still, the Australian powers that be, has abandoned the greatest Australian their country has ever known. They have left him too die in the UK Belmarsh prison, or worse, sent to America. Assange is a Nobel Peace Prize Awardee for journalistic excellence and as a exemplary world citizen. And Australia sits mysteriously incapacitated to defend their native son. WHY?

Actually that might be under the request of Julian Assange as Julian has aspergers and it is more comfortable for a person who is on the spectrum to avoid prolonged eye contact. Second possibility is that the interviewer himself has aspergers in which case he might not like prolonged eye contact with Julian Assange. By the way your comment is 6 years ago but now to update you Julian is under trial and this is the 15th day I think. Check out channel called Richard Medhurst for an EXCELLENT coverage and commentary of what is happening day by day.

QUESTION !!!!!! how can they hold someone in jail because refuses to lie ???? So how is that contempt of court. By rights she should not testify against Julian but should be his defense witness. BY LAW - A witness can, at any time, refuse to answer a question by claiming protection under the Fifth Amendment. The person testifying is the defendant in a criminal case: This is an extension of the protection under the Fifth Amendment. Criminal defendants can never be forced to testify. as a hungarian i can tell u that the fact that we ended up just at the wrong end of the iron curtain was an unspeakably deep tragedy for us. we wanted to be part of the west but couldn't. now look where austria got in the last 60-70 and where hungary did. only because politicians arbitrarily draw the line between us who used to be one country before (Austria-Hungary). my point is everyone wanted to surrender to the US not the Russians and it shows the US was seen as a 'heaven' at the time.

The difficulty in his case, is that the proper channels were part of the system covering up the wrongdoing, and he TRIED to go through them, and was blocked. I think Assange very correctly characterises the situation here when he talks about America's desire for ruthless power being greater than it's desire to be seen as righteous.
