I'm 14 and I think she's the most gorgeous, Innocent, strong, funny, witty, passionate, hard working, actress and singer I have ever heard, seen or ever will see. She was the most immensely talented, caring, compassionate, loving, person I've ever seen, And Boy oh boy could she belt out a song better than anyone I've ever seen with immense emotion, power, and vibrato, and when she sings a song, she doesn't just belt it, and she's a heck of a lot better than today's singers with just a microphone good orchestra and nothing else , and when she sing a song she doesn't just belt it, she is it and she pours every last drop of pure RAW talent and emotion out of it. And that's why I love her!

@@christopherlundgren3499 I would consider myself near those lines, yes. I would like to thank you for writing such a heartfelt comment! I've always appreciated good people, and I'm certain Judy Garland would have said the same. She did defend us in a 1967 interview, after all. I think we not only admire her for her flamboyance, irony, wit, theatrical and music ability, but also because her voice whether she was speaking, reciting stories of life experiences she went through, or singing gave people and herself the following: her life and personalities' climaxes, depletions, complete sadness, unmitigated happiness, and general humanity, I have always thought of her as not only a person whose heart and soul was bigger than all of her put together, but also a person whose anxieties, depressions, humbleness and charm forced her to be unable to realize her power over people; Not only her precious fans, but also her friends and family. I've contemplated she rarely realized her Generosity, Selflessness, Consideration, Compassion toward animals, and humanitarianism. I believe she generally didn't comprehend her genius and beauty, enough to realize she was truly admired and loved by her fans enormously, probably not even intentionally! I'm under the impression that is the reason why she's still, talked about, written about, parodied, and generally, discussed by the public today! Her tenacity, and superficial exterior, when examined closely, was very serious, which gave her a mousetrap-like wit, that we've come to admire and appreciate, so much today! It's almost like we parody her to protect whomever she had helped in her friendships, family circle, and community, so her legacy of civil and human rights preservation, and general humanity toward people who, themselves have been made invisible to protect our species, can revive into the succeeding generations and become the people who we were meant to be! Which is why we her legacy lives on so well today! Her humor, compassion, and talent helps bring out the love, happiness and humanity in people, which in turn, helps them thrive and grow to become the best people they know how to be! Which is the very reason why we love her so much today, and will always continue to celebrate her in high regard!

She won my heart when I was just a boy, for all the reasons you've mentioned. She has captured me. I still mourn and grieve over all the cruelty that she endured, but that she remained loving and caring and passionate is a huge virtue that she instilled in me to this day. Thank you, Lord for her amazing life.

From Dorothy in 'The Wizard of Oz'... Judy climbed so deeply into Her role on camera to her Carnegie Hall Concert where She became 'One with Her Music' as a living breathing Rembrandt on stage singing "The Man That Got Away" or "Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe" Judy brought 'The American Songbook to Life'... as perhaps, Sinatra & a few others where 'Goose-flesh permeates your body & being... & indelible memories!!

Paytonfit I believe that the broadcasting company was as ignorant then as they are today. Great people NEVER die because they are NEVER FORGOTTEN. What amazes me is that no matter how CBS or MGM or any of those chronies tried to PAYBACK, yes even the Academy, she still rose above it with her amazing, incredible talent and just her being, if you will, that couldn’t be quelched. They all stuck together, like the Bobsy Twins or group- MGM, because they fired her but they couldn’t keep her down, CBS stuck with whatever MGM wanted and of course, the ACADEMY followed suit. All started with good ol’ PAYBACK. MGM thought they could chew her up and spit her out. (They worked the kids back then to near the exhaustion, then filled them full of pills to keep them working.) Judy was their greatest piece of property, she gave and gave all she had but when she needed help, time to charge her batteries, time to get the help she needed, they weren’t there for her. She was just a money bank for most everyone in her life, the studio, the stupid business managers, even husbands, all picking the meat off the bones. Then studios want to get more showings in a day so they scalp and hijack A STAR IS BORN and take out reels Willy Nilly so the producers (Luft) and the team have to put in still photos so the movie makes sense. And then there’s the Academy, a bunch of puppets; need I say more. I was just a kid when Judy lost the Academy Award, but even I could figure that one out, (with the help of my dad. Never the less, It didn’t take a nuclear scientist to figure it out.)

Judy's voice is much like Bing Crosby's voice, in that, as we listen as ordinary male/female persons, we wish or imagine that that's how we sound. It's not vocal acrobatics, gifted training or supremacy of talent, its that they capture some common essence of the sublime that is humanity.

This particular performance on her show was actually better than her film performance of the song! No matter the song, no matter the setting...Hollywood's greatest all-time entertainer always gave 110% and more to her audience in a most appreciative manner that made you love her back! Her loss of the Oscar was the biggest robbery in Hollywood's history and everyone there knew it, too. However, they can't steal the love and adoration of her fans. Garland was ridiculously robbed of that Best Actress Oscar and everyone knew it then and knows it now-almost embarrassing for Grace Kelly, who really wasn’t all that remarkable in a fairly forgettable film. But, perhaps, Garland owns the greatest Oscar of all Oscars-the one she was awarded in 1939 for her efforts in Wizard of Oz and Babes in Arms. She won that Oscar for an effort, a performance, a movie that remains the most-watched film in all of history, and a song that has already been awarded as the greatest movie song of the century. An Oscar given JUST for Judy, because she was special. Maybe Judy’s 1939 Oscar is actually the biggest, brightest, most prestigious Oscar that was ever awarded. Think about it. I think it’s the greatest Oscar ever given. And richly deserved. 🍾

For me, the greatest singers, and performers in general, are those with the ability to make every performance different and equally magnificent, and Judy Garland does just that. There's not a single note, a single breath or pause that is wasted, that doesn't hold meaning. Blessed were those who grew up enjoying not just with her talent and passion, but also with her wit and humour! And blessed are we today to enjoy that woman's gifts to humanity through youtube. :)

Every note , every emotion as she sings , those emotions trapped in her body from experiences that the song’s subject is about , she is releasing that trauma energy as she sings . Her singing voice is the sound that the heart would make if it could make a sound . Powerful energy spirit is released when she sings . Her body enacts the release too as she sings .Beautiful

You barely survive the story and she kills you with that wonderful, so difficult to sing song, and she owns it. It's hers Totally. Just retire it. The Man That Got Away.

Thank you, thank you people out there for all your wonderful comments about Judy Garland. You are showing everyone who wants to know, that you can’t stop the great ones. They will go down in history. Judy is one of those people. As James Mason said in STAR IS BORN, that Esther had that something special that you know when you see it, and she had it. That’s it!!! That something special that Judy Garland had that you are very fortunate to get to experience maybe once in your lifetime.

It was a complete travesty that Judy Garland didn't win the Best Actress Academy Award in 1954 for her matchless performance in Cukor's "A Star Is Born". Not only was she superb in the musical sequences, but her dramatic work, particularly her scene with Charles Bickford, as the Studio Chief, describing Norman Maine's struggles in recovering from alcoholism, is staggering. No aspect of Grace Kelly's performance justified her win. Moreover, extensive footage from Star was cut and ultimately lost.

Ralph Ewell We’ll never know if it would have saved her. I’ve often wondered the same thing, but I really don’t think it would have. I NEVER watch anything from 1969, especially the last 3 months of her life. She didn’t die of just an overdose. In her last months she looked exactly like terminally ill patients in their last days of life (I’m a retired nurse). I’ve often wondered how much of an overdose she even took. She gave so much joy in her life, and she had a lot of joy, thank goodness, but she certainly had a sad end.
