You can tell from these clips, that Judy always got a genuine kick of appreciation from the talent of her peers. In spite of her immense talent, Judy was no snob or diva. She was a very loving soul. RIP Lovely Ladies. 🌈

The only two people who had that 'thing" in their voice that just made a song bigger and bigger the further they got into a song, even when they were singing soft. I've always only recognized that trait in these two here. What a joy to get to this stage in life and KZread makes it possible for me to see them TOGETHER, which I never would have seen any other way as this aired 14 years before I was born.

Two powerhouse STARS! The chemistry they had was amazing. As I watch Judy watching Lena, you can see that she was mesmerized by the way she sang and performed. Lena not only was a one-of-a-kind singer, but her whole face performed as she sang!

And as for Miss Lena Lorne! I will be 45 years old in a few days and I could never be happier than hearing such women who has made a such impact in music and for women!!!

Despite having such different personalities, they have very similar vocal coordination. The MGM influence is really apparent. The composer and vocal arranger Hugh Martin worked with both of them, as well as Roger Edens, of course, and Kay Thompson. In the 1940's, Judy and Lena socialized quite a bit at Gene Kelly's house parties and did a lot of singing in his living room! Can you imagine how incredible that was to hear?

When I look at this pairing I want to scream the word "racism" for Lena and what she was denied, but I can't. It wouldn't address what happened to Judy. Both of these women were shafted. At least Lena Horne had the black community and her father's protection to keep her sane. Judy got the full brunt of Hollywood's depravity and corruption. What I love about this video is the obvious appreciation that these two women have for each other. They are sitting closely, holding hands and joking like friends on a playground. They are having fun. Both paid a heavy price to be able to sit together and enjoy the level of mastery at which they are performing. The ramifications are staggering. Thank you for posting this clip.

It was great to see Lena warm up to Judy by this time into this episode. The beginning you can see Lena wasn't too warm to Judy when they did the opening number and Judy tried very hard for Lena to open up and Judy was always a great hostess. Judy was a very giving performer, never afraid of sharing and shining the spotlight to her guests, especially female guests. Judy was very comfortable and never felt threatened by anyone she shared the stage with..

Hollywood missed the boat with Horne. They could've extracted much more from that fine wine than they did. Like her counterpart, Frank Silvera, himself of the same mixed heritage, or even Merle Oberon, also of mixed heritage, Horne could've been cast in a variety of ethnic roles. Anthony Quinn and Charles Bronson often played out of their respective ethnicities. We didn't get enough Horne the fantastic dancer. Would've loved to see her teamed with both Kelly and Astaire in a paso doble. But luckily enough, we do have something worth hanging onto in remembrance of Horne!

Could be a blessing for Horne though, maybe why she lived so long. Unlike Judy and so many others that they pushed and pushed and drained everything out of them. Only so much pressure a human can withstand in life.

msvick66 That's one way of looking at it. But Horne was TOUGH mentally, far tougher than Garland. Diana Ross has that TOUGHNESS, too. But poor Dorothy Dandridge was troubled long before she got to Hollywood, as a well done biography reveals.

It's a tragedy that Lena Horn was so badly affected by the idiotic production codes of the 30s to 50s. She was a star - she was so talented even being barred from leading film roles because of the miscegenation rule couldn't prevent that - but she should have been a megastar.

Judy might not have shown up for rehearsals during her series but she was amazing when it was air time. She had a photgraphic memory. Judy only needed to be shown something once or twice. Sid Luft said that she only read the script for A Star is Born once & never picked it up again. It's natural that when you have that kind of gift, it becomes second nature to us & we forget that not everyone has the ability to memorize so precise. Judy needed little direction & her work speaks for itself.

Reading Mel Torme’s book about producing Judy’s show makes this scene all the more interesting. Judy had not rehearsed with Lena, and it still turned out fantastically.

I'm only seeing 2 women enjoying each other's company. It's a shame that some people see anything other than that.

I did too. I miss the variety shows. Now all we have is reality shows cause they are much less costly to produce.
