In my mind, Judy Dench performs the very best version of "Send in the Clowns".

As an actor, one must intrinsically feel the imaginary wall between the stage and the audience, and never ever cross it otherwise the wall breaks and you have the realness of reality instead of the performance. At the end, when the audience was applauding and cheering, Judi was feeling all of what she had held back so as not to break that fourth wall. The alchemy of artistry. The genius that is Judi Dench.

this was a segment of a live performance called Hey Mr Producer: The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh -- Judi Dench and David Kernan -- a 1998 concert given at the Lyceum Theatre, London, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh. It was a charity gala in aid of the Royal National Institute for the Blind and the Combined Theatrical Charities. Originally was only available on non-US VHS (which I promptly had converted) -- but I see it's now available on several pricey imported DVDs. and worth every penny for the performers: Bernadette Peters, Ellen Greene (Little Shop of Horrors), John Barryman, Millicent Martin, Lea Salongo, Jonathan Pryce, ALW/Sondheim birthday duet, Tom Lehrer, Maria Friedman, Elaine Paige, and introduction by Julie Andrews.
