JUDY COLLINS - "Ghost Riders In The Sky" 2010

Музыка

"Ghost Riders In The Sky," written in1949 by Stanley Jones, is one of the great tracks on the new Judy Collins album titled "Paradise." In this video clip, the black and white photo of Judy and Joni Mitchell was taken in 1968 by Rowland Scherman. You can see more of his photos at his Web site, RowlandScherman dot com. The color photo of Judy against the B & W photo background was taken by Phil Saviano in April 2010. The last photo of Judy with her guitar was taken at Newport Folk Festival 2009, by Sean Hafferty.

Not many singers can pull off the no vibrato / minimal vibrato sound successfully. Ms Collins is in that small club for sure.

I believe that I have listened to just about every version of "Ghost Riders in the Sky" that is up on KZread - so when I saw this one, by a major recording artist from the hippie generation (my generation), Judy Collins - I just knew I had to watch it. And it's a very good version, indeed.

There (still-after all these years) is something so pleasing in Judy Collins voice. I guess a testimony to the quality of a song and melody would be that if anyone at all sings/plays it and remains true to the way its writer put it...the song remains pleasing to the ear, the mind, the heart, the soul.

Nice touch, I would wonder how someone could sing this song w/o a gravelly cowboy voice but this is it, something slightly elegiac reminiscing not trying to overpower it but then you also have to get everything just right, can't just run over parts. She does that, a great job telling the story in the song. I kinda get the impression from this version the cowboy didn't change his ways ;^)

Wonderful rendition. Let me suggest another female version: Peggy Lee. Ms. Lee was a truly unique voice. I think we all know and probably agree that this song is so great one can almost say that all the versions are terrific. I first heard it by Vaughan Monroe. Mercifully, the horrendous Bing Crosby version is unheard.

+Mz Domm - Actually, we are all critics in the sense that we know what we like and what we don't. As for being a singer, I no longer sing professionally, but I made quite a good living at it for many years. One of the things I had to do was decide which songs my own voice and style were suited for and which songs were not. The songwriter created a gritty, dark song best presented by someone with a gritty style and a raw voice to convey the full effect. Judy Collins has neither of these attributes. As much as I enjoy her singing songs such as "Send In The Clowns" or "Someday Soon", that doesn't mean that I should automatically like everything she presents. As I stated in my original post, there are many songs suited for Judy Collins' exceptionally beautiful voice and style, but in my opinion this isn't one of them.
