JUDY COLLINS - "Both Sides Now" with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops 1976

Музыка

Judy Collins joins Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops for a performance of her hit song "Both Sides Now." This concert at Boston's Symphony Hall was held in May 1976.
I have carried over many comments from previous postings of this video clip, which had over 186,000 viewings. The clip was recorded back in 1976 on a first generation Sony Betamax. Don't miss Judy's new, May 2020 re-release of her 1970 classic, "Amazing Grace," now with a world-wide Virtual Choir. Running on KZread and linked here: • Judy Collins & The Glo... If you like it, pass it along to your friends!

This is amazing! First she gives melody (well most of it), and then she harmonizes around the melody, giving it a feel of improvisation. All the while, doing some really interesting things with the phrasing. This takes not only solid musicianship, but also sharp mental focus to keep it all together.

"Both Sides Now" Rows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere I've looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It's cloud illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels The dizzy dancing way you feel As every fairy tale comes real I've looked at love that way But now it's just another show You leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know Don't give yourself away I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take, and still somehow It's love's illusions I recall I really don't know love at all Tears and fears and feeling proud To say "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way But now old friends are acting strange They shake their heads, they say I've changed Well something's lost, but something's gained In living every day I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all I've looked at life from both sides now From up and down and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all

They put on a nice little show at the old National Guard Armory, (which is now a court house) on Jones Road in Falmouth, Ma. Judy was absolutely fabulous that night! I can still see her on that little stage wearing a white dress and high heels. She had the most beautiful, big blue eyes I have ever witnessed. I've been a huge fan of hers all these years and my favorite song sung by her is, "Both Sides Now".

In 1981 I went to a Spyro Gyra concert at Chicagofest. Judy Collins was the act before Spyro. I had never heard of her. She came on, sat behind her piano, and put on a SPECTACULAR, relaxed, show. What pianist! What a voice! Great band! Judy blew my mind, and I never did drugs, ha! I fell in love. 39 years later, I am still in love with you, Judy!

TheBigDelicious 2 years ago 1969: I am lying on a blanket about twelve feet from Judy onstage (Phil Ochs had opened for her), with my love by my side, both of us high on mescaline. Bathed in their radiance, I, a week away from an appointed destination before a Draft Board that might send me to Vietnam. This, I will never forget.

Wow, I was about 19 . Life was beautiful , doing my college degree in Bangalore, India . Followed Vietnam war every day . Followed the flower culture all over the world . We were the dreamers , those days . The funny thing is , the dream never ruptured , it just flowed over. Joined the army , got a commission . Went to war Made a new country ,Bangladesh. Moved on moved over . But the heartstrings pull you over to those bygone lovely carefree years. Our flower children ways . May every generation onow one !!

@Lloyd Gittens You are the worst kind of human refuse. You have probably never done a single thing in your life to help anyone else, and yet you judge a young person you know nothing about, who had to possibly go do something you don't have the guts to do (note he didn't say if he was sent there or not). Ask the people in South Vietnam about the communists we were fighting and what they did. Grow up and learn something about life. You're doubtless a victim of an upbringing without a strong male figure in your life to kick your ass when you needed it. For that you have a small excuse.

She has amazing ability of toying with harmonics and melody. Back and forth to minor and back again and then throwing rhythm out the window but floating time. She’s really something else.

Exactly right. Most of us, myself included, would be terrified to depart from melody and tempo like that in front of an audience and an orchestra. One can end up on a dead-end. Not her.

I grew up in the 50's and early 60's. While other kids were listening to rock and roll, I was buying folk song records from Seeger, Bikel, Baez, Collins, and many others. I guess that was why I became a member of the SDS in college. I protested the Vietnam War every chance I got. Then in late 1969, I was drafted into the marines. Fortunately I was spared most combat.
