Words "Gwalia Deserta - Part XV" (meaning literally "Wasteland of Wales") by Idris Davies, an ex-coalminer and later teacher at Rhymney School. Tune Pete Segger

Indescribably delicious. We sang an arrangement of this in my High School Choir when I was in Paramus (NJ) HS in 1973-5. Hearing the song like this still sends chills up my spine. Seek out the Pete Seeger version which is also available on KZread. I had listened to that one recently, which is presumably why the algorithm brought this one to me. Who made the mine owner? Indeed.

Seeger's version is my favorite; this is a great cover. I'd love to hear a true Welsh singer do a cover of this, and get all the pronunciations right.

I've always thought it was a guitar part song to begin with - to make a 12 string guitar sound like the Bells themselves!!!!!!!!!

I love this song. I lost several songbooks including a Judy Collins one to flooding several years ago. Thank you for posting this song. It may make you want to throw up, but I wish I could find it in karaoke format. I have found that some people love it when I do the standards, but I don't play an instrument, so it's either that or sing a capella.

A capella? You mean a fancy term for unaccompanied? Why not, what's wrong with that. Gives you more freedom to put your own timing and emphasis on the song. Started singing in public (well, on Zoom) recently and I do two out of three that way. Try it!

I know, as a Welshman,it's too much to ask and it isn't anybodies fault. But I wish people could pronounce Rhymney correctly. IT'S PRONOUNCED RUM-KNEE

Completely out of my control but thank you for letting us know. I will make sure I say it correctly from now on. Just make sure the ISIHAC gang get it right when they visit. PS I'm Australian so I hope you will excuse me.

+theblackhaze It is indeed a shame. I love every version (especially this one), but I can't help weep a little inside that what would otherwise be an incredible musical tribute to a dark piece of our history is slightly tarnished by one syllable! Oh, and "Rhondda".

"'Don't let miners work glumly', Say the sad bells of Rhymney. 'Of their work, make them fonder', Say the black bells of Rhondda. 'Please, don't burden them further', Say the brown bells of Merthyr. 'Please, let there be no frenzy', Say the moist bells of Swansea. 'We need miners, it's no lie', Sang the silver bells of Wye". These still aren't perfect rhymes, but they're closer than the traditional version (I read that "Rhymney" is actually pronounced "RUM-nee"). Also, Wye, Wales and the word "why" are homophones.

@johnwilliams9176 Right on, and I think it's no coincidence. The way I heard it, Roger McGuinn worked with Ms. Collins on this arrangement, and that is probably even his guitar we're hearing. Thus it would have been part of what he brought to The Byrds just a little later. I'll go out on a limb and say I think it's just the same story with Turn! Turn! Turn! -- that is, Pete Seeger set the words to music; subsequently Ms. Collins sang it for this album, in sessions that included Mr. McGuinn; he then brought it to The Byrds, and -- not that Pete Seeger or Judy Collins lacked anything, but -- The Byrds just knocked it out of the park.
