Judy Collins -- Anathea

Музыка

Lazlo Feher stole a stallion.
Stole him from the misty mountain.
And they chased him and they caught him,
And in iron chains they bound him.
Word was brought to Anathea
That her brother was in prison.
"Bring me gold and six fine horses.
I will buy my brothers freedom."
"Judge, oh, judge, please spare my brother.
"I will give you gold and silver."
"I don't want your gold and silver.
"All I want are your sweet favors."
"Anathea, oh, my sister,
"Are you mad with grief and sorrow?
"He will rob you of your flower,
"And he'll hang me from the gallows."
Anathea did not heed him.
Straightway to the judge went running.
In his golden bed at midnight,
There she heard the gallows groaning.
Cursed be that judge so cruel.
Thirteen years may he lie bleeding!
Thirteen doctors cannot cure him.
Thirteen shelves of drugs can't heal him.
"Anathea, Anathea,
"Don't go out into the forest.
"There among the green pines standing,
"You will find your brother hanging."

I love this song! I still have the original Judy Collins album that this was on. It was my parents. I have sung along with this song since I was only 7 years old! I sang it for my 26 year old niece recently and it made her cry. She said, "Aunt Bonnie why didn't you ever sing professionally?" She's such a sweet girl. :)

I saw her sing this in Symphony Hall in 1962. The note absolutely filled the Hall, which has great acoustics.

I heard her in Symphony Hall (Boston) in 1981. I don't remember if she sang this, though.

I first heard her sing this song at "The KIng's Rook", a coffee house in Ipswich MA, in 1966. I sat four feet from her as she did so. Mezmerizing.

This was the first album I heard of Judy Collin's work - I already loved Joan Baez and folk music, and this album is still my favorite work from Judy Collins - her brilliant voice shows so well in this song.

This was originally a Hungarian folk song. It was collected by Bela Bartok and translated by A L Lloyd. Bob Dylan did an "Americanization" of it called "Seven Curses". This version is absolutely beautiful.

I only discovered this song last year. I discovered Dayle Stanley's version accidentally and fell in love with it. This is also a nice version of the song so thank you for sharing. I will be sure to look out for more Judy Collins songs. Lovely.
