I would know this from Billy Bragg. Same song? Yes, now to answer my own Q. A Panorama prog this week, BBC, on housing shortage and conditions in which people are living in, went back as far as the Thatcher era.

"'Don't let miners work glumly', Say the sad bells of Rhymney. 'Of their work, make them fonder', Say the black bells of Rhondda. 'Please, don't burden them further', Say the brown bells of Merthyr. 'Please, let there be no frenzy', Say the moist bells of Swansea. 'We need miners, it's no lie', Sang the silver bells of Wye". These still aren't perfect rhymes, but they're closer than the traditional version (I read that "Rhymney" is actually pronounced "RUM-nee"). Also, Wye, Wales and the word "why" are homophones.

Indescribably delicious. We sang an arrangement of this in my High School Choir when I was in Paramus (NJ) HS in 1973-5. Hearing the song like this still sends chills up my spine. Seek out the Pete Seeger version which is also available on KZread. I had listened to that one recently, which is presumably why the algorithm brought this one to me. Who made the mine owner? Indeed.

Seeger's version is my favorite; this is a great cover. I'd love to hear a true Welsh singer do a cover of this, and get all the pronunciations right.

@johnwilliams9176 Right on, and I think it's no coincidence. The way I heard it, Roger McGuinn worked with Ms. Collins on this arrangement, and that is probably even his guitar we're hearing. Thus it would have been part of what he brought to The Byrds just a little later. I'll go out on a limb and say I think it's just the same story with Turn! Turn! Turn! -- that is, Pete Seeger set the words to music; subsequently Ms. Collins sang it for this album, in sessions that included Mr. McGuinn; he then brought it to The Byrds, and -- not that Pete Seeger or Judy Collins lacked anything, but -- The Byrds just knocked it out of the park.

Generally speaking, I think that any desire to enter into professional politics should disqualify you. That being said, this a great tune to hum whenever you walk into a ballot box.
