Judo Metagame - The Shintaro Higashi Show

Ойын-сауық

A metagame, often described as a 'game within a game,' refers to the strategies used within a game to secure victory. Every competitive game, including Judo, has its own metagame. Yet, due to Judo's rapid pace and nuanced tactics, its metagame can be challenging to recognize and analyze. In this episode, Shintaro and Peter delve into the most prevalent metagames in Judo today and discuss strategies for developing your own effective metagame.

Some of Travis' grip breaks have opened new worlds to me, stuff like using your hip and their own anatomy to break grips, like just turning and doing a little hip move could break a really strong grip almost freely. I can't say I really understand how it works, but there's some beauty to it. And I recently saw Nagase Takanori doing some fascinating grip breaks that didn't even look like he was doing anything yet the bigger, stronger guy's hand just fell off.

You dont teach uchi?! To bjj guys? Thats so good for single leg counters though? Ive used it alot in live rolling and hit a clean one last comp. Hell my buddy hits it pretty much every competition we go to. Granted our coach has a love for judo and dosnt let us pull guard. But still. Uchi foot sweeps and the reaps should still be taught. no? Even at the high level you see alot of the bteam guys using it alot.

I think you got the wrong meaning of metagame. It’s true that it’s the game but at least as far as I know the metagame describes the most successful strategies (plural) of a game and how to play around them hence game in the game. Peter said Tikitaka football and it’s correct. There was a time between the late 2000s and early 2010 where all were trying to emulate that strategy. I give you a Judo example. Leg Grab as defence in the pre ban era. And nowadays the ‘playing the Shido’ which Hashinoto is the champion of but people start to adapt. A development which is currently underway and changing the meta is the belt grip Ouchi Gari if you watch Judo Highlights videos he explains it 👍
