Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Is there a difference?

What is the difference between Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? At first glance these two Martial Arts look very similar. As a devoted practitioner of both styles of grappling, I am going to lay out the differences between the two arts.

Judo has moved more to the standing fight in recent times, about 20 years ago, fighting on the ground was a bit more prominent. At the club I practiced we spent 50% on the ground and 50% on the feet.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Basically Just Judo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu looks just like Judo, because it is Basically Just Judo. When Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Conde Koma", began teaching Carlos Gracie in Belem do Para, Brazil in 1917, he was teaching Jigoro Kano's Jiu-Jitsu direct from the Kodokan in Japan. The name "Judo" was not popularized until 1925. Mitsuyo Maeda was a Kodokan Judo instructor whose specialty was ground fighting (newaza). This type of ground-only fighting is often referred to as Kosen Judo, or High School Judo, because it was popularized in Japanese High Schools as a form of interscholastic wrestling. Kosen Judo rules allowed direct transition to newaza, enabling scenarios where one less skilled competitor could drag the other down to the ground (a tactic now known as "pulling-guard" in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). There is absolutely no question that the Gracie family demonstrated great skill and marketing acumen by promoting "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the masses. Helio Gracie's loss to Kodokan Judoka Masahiko Kimura was advertised as a "moral victory". More importantly, the Gracies sponsored the original Ultimate Fighting Championships when the world was begging for a professional combat sport with more depth than Boxing and more realism than the WWF. However, there is now a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students who only know half the story. Worse yet, they are often paying enormous prices for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu name only to learn a subset of Jigoro Kano's original Jiu-Jitsu techniques and teaching methods. The Judo world has not been without fault too. High ranking judoka often looked down on the new popular MMA world due to Judo's Olympic status. As a result, most Judo schools have been over-emphasizing the throwing techniques within Judo due to pressure from the International Olympic Comittee to increase ratings on TV for the brief moments when Olympic Judo would receive air time. Similarly, there is a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students, and now instructors, who incorrectly think Judo is nothing but a standing sport. Fortunately, the phenomenal success of Ronda Rousey, 2008 Olympic Judo Bronze Medalist and UFC / MMA Champion has brought attention back to the accurate history of Judo and its rightful place in the Jiu-Jitsu grappling world.

You make some excellent points. I train both traditional Japanese judo and bjj. I love judo but train bjj as a necessity really. Judo is a beautiful thing done right. Lots of bjj guys are quite ignorant of how influential judo is in bjj. I also find the new words like bow and arrow choke and windscreen wipers stuff like that annoying. Playing music during training in bjj also annoys me and guy’s smoking weed before training. Far too much hippie stuff in bjj. Lots of instructors teaching bjj are not good enough either. Judo has it’s faults but I find much more pure.

Excellent video. But just for more clarification : First ,,, in 3:55 1- For an IPPON with throwing technique, it must have 4 elements : 1- power 2- good control. 3- landing the opponent almost on his full flat back. You missed the last point 4- it has to be FAST as well. Second ,,, In 4:38 In judo , you can’t manipulate any joints like in jiu jitsu. The only allowed joint is the ELBOW joint. If a judoka tries to manipulate any other joint except the elbow , he will lose that match directly with what we call in judo a “Hansoku-make” penalty ,, and that means he loses that match for using a prohibited tech. Third ,,, 4:55 You said : “ a judoka has much larger reluctance to go to the ground” which is not true. A good judoka , especially if he is good in ground techniques which we call “ne-waza” in judo, will be eager to go to the ground because he can have one of the three ippons there. But he can’t go to the ground without throwing or really trying to throw and then to complete on the ground. If a judoka goes directly to the ground without a throwing technique, he’ll get a “shido” penalty considering it as a “false attack”. But if they get to the ground , referee must give them the full time if one of them has a good and continuous action that may lead him to victory either by “osaikomi waza” pinning for 20 seconds “Shimi waza” choking Or “kansitsu waza” joint lock specifically the armlock. In judo , there are many great judokas who can finish their opponents in just less than a minute. 5:53 Most important philosophically in judo : You must try to finish the match as fast as you can. And the fastest way is by throwing … if it is not a full point , then you can complete with the three other techniques. Semantics. When I make videos I try to use the terms with the widest understanding. Most people have no clue what Osaekomi Waza is, but know what a Pin is. Good teachers don't talk over new student's heads. It is very common for Judoka to translate Osaekomi Waza into "Pinning". For example "Judoinfo.com" uses it judoinfo.com/pinning/ Here is a wiki article about grappling holds. If you scroll down to the section on "Pinning Holds" you will see Osaekomi Waza, Hold downs, and Pins are all interchangeable words. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grappling_hold

Great vid, man! I'm definitely curious as to your insights on Judo or BJJ as a self defense technique because I was mulling over that question for a while. Right now I'd have to put my money on Judo because I feel it's more realistic, whereas BJJ is conceptualized for ring/cage fighting. BJJ is great when there's a shock absorbing mat to defuse throws, but in the real world on concrete or even dirt, Judo throws are lethal. Not only that, but the practitioner can avoid getting tied up on the ground and stomped by other attackers. I feel the Gracey's got a little carried away with ground game aspect because they did a lot of mat sparring and forgot the point of self defense. Judo was designed with realistic combat scenarios in mind, where the fight isn't fair 1v1 and the surface you're on isn't as forgiving. Animals fight on the ground, men fight on their feet.

You're not gonna get a Judo guy on the ground most of the time anyway, at least not fast enough. Remember, he knows all your tricks and more given Judo's better standup game. Naturally it depends on the skill level of both combatants, but it's more likely you'd get hurled to the ground and knocked unconscious before you'd get him into a choking position. As for the animals quote, animals mostly fight on all fours, as in the ground. Ground game is highly effective and important to learn - as a last resort - but going to the ground in most combat situations is suicide.

I hear ppl say "100% of fights start standing up" a lot, and that's fine, in the context of combat sport, but when people translate that to actual fights that occur organically in the real world, that's when I contend that it's probably closer to 90%... because it's not like nobody ever walked up to a sitting or laying person and just started in on them without warning... it happens. So not 100% of 'real' fights start standing up. Just saying.

  • @UnCompress_

I think you must explain that there is a difference in the sport and the martial art. In the sport Judo your explanation is correct but with the martial art of Judo ground fight (ne-waza) is trained much more than the sport. I think this is a more allround approach of the art. Judo is focussed more on disrupting the balance (Judo = gentle way) and then using this against the opponent. Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) has a more focus on mobility on the ground and use the same techniques as Judo but more advanced but loses the off-balancing of the opponent.

Seems like you should clarify that you're more talking about Brazilian JJ, rather than Jiu Jitsu itself. Regular old JJ was about disarming and taking down an armed and armored opponent. It evolved after the Samurai to be a rather brutal art that was essentially Judo, only with far more emphasis on arm and wrist locks, elbow locks, etc, on top of throws and ground work. Kano removed the more brutal elements of traditional JJ that typically saw its practitioners maimed in competition and emphasized the leverage based take-downs and throws used to control and submit your opponent with minimal harm. Because the damaging stuff was removed, you could randori freely and not fear catastrophic injury. BJJ of course came about when Judo was taught to the Gracie's, who then removed 90% of the stand up throwing aspect in favor of almost exclusively ground stuff. Traditional JJ is somewhat hard to find in the states. good judo is, too. At least when compared to MMA and BJJ schools, along with wrestling programs.

@@memysurname7521 how can you say that it's a lie? If you practice Judo you definitely know the submissions that are common and basic to peanut butter and jelly Brazilian blow job jiu jitsu! In Judo we just call our groundwork newaza! With the addition of throwing an opponent and using off balancing techniques as well as break falling techniques and tumbling techniques and the list goes on! The only thing you're going to learn in BJJ is how to pull guard and wrap your legs around another person like a prison bitch while you get your head pounded trying to work for your triangle while at the same time trying to blow yourself and your opponent! Don't you even try and disrespect the art of Judo! It is on a different level then BJJ

@@williambreen4290 You're a troll, I got it, gonna try to mantain things civil tho. To say that the one that know Judo know BJJ, is like saying that the one that know Shotokan Karate know Dutch Kickboxing. It's stupid. Besides ancestry, both arts also are fundamentally different. In both you have to throw and sub as fundamentals, but while in Judo you gave Osaekomi as it's third fundamental, in BJJ you have as it's third fundamental to wrestle for the Mount and/or Back Mount instead. And please, don't try to degrade BJJ, make you sound stupid. It's too much of a successful art to deny its quality.

I am half the video, honestly would be easier to say that BJJ is a form of wrestling were you wrestle to obtain the Mount and / or Back Mount, opposed to immobilize your opponent in the Osaekomi positions that includes the side control but not Back Mount. And of course, there is BJJ absorption of western wrestling, with the original Gracie brothers learning CACC and Graeco from Dudu, and Rolls learning Folk Wrestling from Bob Anderson. And of course modern day BJJ Folk Wrestling cross training and influence. Is pretty much like Karate Kickboxing relationship. To say that Karate-MuayThai-Boxing mix is just Karate is not only ignorant, but dishonest ... and ridiculous of course 🤣

Yes I agree, judo is mostly throws, while the standard traditional jujitsu is grappling while standing then transitions to judo, Brazilian jujitsu basically is grappling on the ground

The Gracies fight from standing. Sport BJJ often starts on the ground, but Gracie Jiu-Jitsu starts standing, since all real fights start from standing.
