honestly I think even a lot of broadway actors have understood this. Like they don't appreciate being filmed, but they themselves get why people watch bootlegs and maybe have seen some themselves (for example like Andrew Feldman and Ryan McCartan- they get that theatre needs to be more accessible).

Also re: ‘theatre performers who can only act and sing are not good enough’, even though it wasn’t intended this way it comes off a little ableist. I love theatre so much and perform where I can but I’m also physically disabled and my body just isn’t capable of doing anything more than the most basic choreography, and even then I sometimes can’t do that. I use crutches full time and will be getting a wheelchair soon, and while singing and acting can still be done with those, I really can’t dance in the way that is expected for theatre with my crutches or from a wheelchair

I definitely see your point and it is a reductive opinion, but I do think that there are many performers who can still have physicality and musicality within their own limitations. Ali Stroker demonstrates tremendous musicality. Her choreography looks different, but she still executes it well. I would say the same for Deaf West productions including Spring Awakening and Big River before it where the movements weren't traditional dancing, but were both theatrical and musical. Where the theatre world needs to do better is employing choreographers and directors who understand how to make those pieces come together.

I wouldn’t have ever thought about that angle so thank you for sharing. But also I sat through a performance two weeks ago where the guy only sang half the words and when he did sing he was practically screaming out of tune. And at first it was funny but after an hour you feel bad for the guy and wonder why no one has even told him he can’t sing/dance/perform. Honestly it felt cruel for people to support him because one day someone’s gonna have to break his heart and it’s better to do that at the start then after he’s invested so much into it. And he clearly had already. I absolutely see the cruelty in telling someone they aren’t good enough but also a lot of humanity, and letting people keep their dignity. I’m sure that guy must have noticed half the audience leaving before the first act was over. Also it’s one of the reasons I hate busking so much. Most of it is people with no self-awareness inflicting it on everyone else. Someone needs to tell that 19 year old that almost managing to sing one indie song from 20 years ago doesn’t mean you have a career in singing that everyone else needs to hear. It’s harsh but it’s true. Let the people go on with their day in peace.

Especially when the message behind Six that even Andrea Macasaet shared in an interview that there is space for you in that room (the room being the theatre industry) I find incredibly awful that some people wish to push this Eurocentric view that the queens need to be performed a certain way and that by not having the “British accent” it is less. Because then you are indirectly telling the people this show is for that there isn’t a space for them, that they don’t get to be seen, that people like them don’t make it in these spaces. You are for the very thing Toby and Lucy are against and it’s wrong.

I agree with Amy's take on Ansel Elgort in West Side Story. He was fine, but he was definitely the weakest link in an otherwise strong cast. I thought his singing was pretty good, and his dancing in Cool was amazing, but…his acting left a lot to be desired, especially in his scenes with Rachel Zegler, who somehow did more work than Ansel in that department despite WSS being her first film

I personally thought he did a pretty decent job. Not comparable to a lot of the other performances but he wasn’t out of place. But I feel like maybe that’s bias because they essentially wrote off all the great Riff and Bernardo themes and plot parts and characters in general and that really lowered the film for me. So I do think part of me is less let down by him because I was so much more let down by other parts of the movie.

Adding to the sensory thing, I haven’t researched it recently to know if it’s still an issue, but the fact that so many relaxed performances tend to be shows specifically geared more towards kids has always bothered me - I feel like it plays into the idea we have of autistic children and never mentioning adults, where we either infantalise or ignore adults with special needs (specifically autism) entirely

Problem with whacking out £10 tickets is you then annoy the people that have already paid full price. I've been involved with putting on gigs in the past and we had 'flash sales' to get a bit of cash rolling during slow sales periods... and the amount of negative feedback we got was quite unpleasant and also difficult to defend as they had a point. The more fair way would be to have cheaper tickets to start so that 'early birds' get a discount with ticket prices increasing as the date gets closer, though this doesn't work if the demand isn't there and if the problem is empty seats close to the event then they're going to stay empty. Not sure what the answer is as we never really managed to find the best way.

I think also from a business standpoint they'd be worried about devaluing their tickets for future performances. If consumers know that they can just wait until the last minute to get extremely cheap tickets then no one would buy tickets in advance because they're so much more expensive.

I also can't help but think the people who would benefit most from £10 tix on the day would be people who live in London. So it would improve accessibility a lot for people who live in the area but wouldn't do much to improve accessibility in general. Not saying improving accessibility for Londoners is a bad thing but it is only part of the issue. Paying expensive train/plane fares to come to London on the off chance you'll be able to get cheap seats is a huge financial risk.

  • @rhonab6698

    @rhonab6698

I know there is the lottery system that Hamilton uses where you enter the week of and then if there are seats left you might get given the chance to buy a cheaper ticket the day before the performance you want to see it. It doesn't keep theatres full necessary cos not everyone who enters and gets picked is going to buy the tickets, but it's at least something and might mitigate people complaining about paying a higher price when they did - for me at least the lottery system isn't feasible as i'm in glasgow so arranging travel and accommodation for london only a week before on the off chance i even get offered to buy a ticket isn't feasible and it's definitely not feasible only doing it the day before if i secure a ticket, so i really don't mind that those options are available, while i'd just rather save up and book in advance so i know my trip won't be wasted and i see the shows i want to see.

Unpopular opinion: Six Broadway has the tightest/best vocals all around. I’ve seen Six in the west end and have heard other casts from around the world but none of them blend or sound as full as Broadway cast. Each individual queen on Broadway can sing and be consistent, other queens from around the world can sing and can be consistent too but there are also a lot of queens who just don’t hold up to the vocal demand the show calls for there to be.

Some of the cast was excellent, some not. But they really should have improved on the WSS story, rather than copy and weaken (imo) it. Chino was just awful (not the actor, the character). He came across to me as a guy who thought he had some claim on Maria and killed Tony for taking her away. Not revenge for his friend dying who he had just called foolish the scene earlier. The original still wasn't great for Chino, but at least it made somewhat more sense.

My thoughts about the heathers thing and how times have changed is I don’t think that sort of stuff should be removed or changed because in a way that is trying to deny history and to deny that at one point in time this sort of humour and this treatment of people did occur and was somewhat deemed acceptable. But what I feel like could be done about shows like heathers and other old media, it’s put a disclaimer at the start saying “this show contains some offensive material, rightly deemed inappropriate by society today. We will not remove this material because doing so would be an attempt to deny history and deny that these mentalities were once deemed appropriate, we will not apologise for the past and material written for the standard of the day, but we will acknowledge how far we have come as a society” I think I’ve seen something similar to that before by a company (it might have been Warner Brothers) when showing really really old cartoon animations which are very outdated, stating that by hiding these animations would be trying to deny history, and they won’t apologise for the past material written to the standard of society at that time, but instead acknowledge that by today’s standards it is offensive and acknowledge how far we’ve come.

I’ve asked them a simple question “if you know the show contains a word that’s extremely triggering for you then why buy tickets to see said show that contains said word?” And they’ve just gone on the attack! They’re not going to change the show because it upsets you! That was the language and abuse that the guy who’s real life it’s based on had to live with and go through day in, day out when he was a teenager! And the show gives a content warning. It’s people like that that annoy me! They’ll watch the show, get really offended and then go on social media and complain about it and try to get it canceled! Cancel Culture has gone way too far nowadays, it’s beyond ridiculous in my personal opinion!

I do think part of the Dear Evan Hanson issue around romanticizing mental illness is that I don't necessarily think the *text* of the show supports that. I think the way they have chosen to market the show and what fans were encouraged to latch onto underscores a more nuanced point. The movie really highlighted this for me because it stripped even more of the nuance away. Evan isn't a hero. Also on the James Corden front, this reminds me a little of the Guy Fieri criticism that now has some backlash - It's a little like you're punishing a guy for being really enthusiastic and helping to pour a lot of money into musical productions and get them made. Is he overused and miscast at times? 100%, but I think the narrative that he ruins things is a bit much. He was very good in Into the Woods. Maybe an unpopular opinion - But the roles where he is open to the most criticism, you gotta put some fault on the script and the direction. He may have made some choices on the Prom in terms of characterization, but it seems like Ryan Murphy encouraged it.

I’m not his biggest fan but he was excellent in One Man, 2 Guvnors and I loved Gavin and Stacey. At this point I think he has been miscast in a few films and people will always be influenced by the old stories where he was truly behaving like an arsehole. At this point I’m glad he has acknowledged his past behaviour and is getting help for it. He is a talented guy after all. It’s a shame that his past behaviour still influences how people see him today when he is trying to learn from his past mistakes. No need to cancel someone if they have learned something from it.

I need to sit in the front section or I can’t see at all, I also need a carer with me or I can’t find my way around the theatre or get home etc. I cannot afford £200 (often even more) per show to be able to do this which means I can’t go see theatre at all without the access financial help they offer. It’s completely changed my life. Beforehand I maybe saw theatre once a year, often less so. Since I discovered discounted prices for disabilities I’ve been able to see so much theatre! It’s been amazing.

unpopular opinion (I know this video is old but I just thought of it): shows shouldn't last more than 10 years on Broadway, and I say this as someone who enjoys both Phantom (rip original production) and Wicked, and I say this mostly because I think we're due for some new shows, not that the long-running shows are bad, just that it's been awhile since there have been new and refreshing shows on Broadway (which is probably why I like kimberly akimbo and shucked so much lol)

The King and I is still disturbingly relevant. South Pacific dealt with racism with an intelligent delicacy that is often overlooked. Bye Bye Birdie and No Strings featured interracial relationships. The list is pretty vast, and the craft is so much more intricate and thoughtful than most modern musicals, that often insult the intelligence of audiences.

@soy boy I think it really is person to person. Some people would use 'partially blind' but it probably also depends on their amount of sightedness. And of course everyone is different. Some folks care strongly and some just don't. I think it's similar to the Deaf community, at least in identification, because there isnt a "Blind culture" as there is a Deaf culture. People born and raised in the culture use the capital D, and those who weren't (or perhaps lost their hearing later in life) use the lowercase d. So the same might apply to the blind I suppose?

You must know when the word is said or about to be said in the show if you know it contains that word so either leave the room for a minute or block it out by putting your fingers in your ears and think about something else! Cancel culture is becoming ridiculous now. The word has always been in the show so I highly doubt that they’ve removed it considering that shows give warnings now about any offense content the show may contain!

It’s a bit difficult to go back to where I come from seeing as I live in the country I was born in! I’ve not seen a single person until now complaining about that word you’re talking about in the show, which is why I asked you why you brought tickets knowing that the show contains a word you’ve admitted is triggering for you! This is a public place and platform, expect people to ask you simply questions similar to mine if you admit something on said public platform! And don’t tell me to shut up. It’s you whining about a word in a show that’s always been in the show since the beginning so they’re not going to remove it and as far as I know it’s still in the show. And I mentioned Cancel Culture because it’s things like what you’ve done that’s causing all these problems! You know there’s a word you find offensive and triggering contained in the show yet you’ve brought tickets to see said show that contains said word. Then afterwards you’ll go on social media and complain about it despite you knowing about it beforehand. You get a warning before the shows nowadays, you get warnings on the posters that it may cause offense because it contains offensive material. Yet you’re already on a public platform asking and complaining about it after you’ve brought tickets! Maybe you should have asked when you was buying them if it contains the word you’re worried about. Because if I was in the same theater and all of a sudden someone started yelling and making a commotion because they got triggered by a word that they knew was in the show, I wouldn’t be happy at all and I’d make sure they were thrown out! A lot of these shows have been around for years and woke snowflakes are now starting to ruin them because “they find the content offensive and triggering” give me a break! Try having a racist word yelled at you multiple times a day just because you’re not the same color as everyone else then get back to me. I’ve grown a backbone and gotten use to being called the N Word or the C Word, it’s a shame that other people can’t do the same! Is it a bad word? Yes! Is it a word that shouldn’t be used? Yes! But that was the language and type of names that people used and called others back then unfortunately so they’re not going to update the show when it plays out a lot of the real life events and abuse the guy it’s based on actually lived through and had to deal with day in, day out as a teenager! 🤦🏽‍♀️🙄

Yes they should change the script for me and every other autistic and disabled person because we deserve to be able to watch a show and enjoy it as much as any other person. What you’ve been through is horrible but that doesn’t mean you can tell me that me being offended isn’t valid.
