I still find it difficult to tell if I'm going to hit my left front bumper when reversing into or going through narrow gaps. It's definitely getting better with practice but I still stay on the safe side and take my time. Your videos have been a great help. In fact, you've taught me more about driving than anyone else. @@cubiversewastaken I've put an order in for a car. Too much waiting these days. But in the meantime I am watching all these video multiple times so I can keep these in mind when I start driving. I think to avoid panic it works well for me if I just get used to plenty of driving at 1st and 2nd gears. Plenty of stopping and starting and practice on empty roads. Rapid starts and smooth and harsh breaking etc... do it all before you have to do it on live roads.

@@mcuembedded Yeah, if you’ll stick to slow-speed stuff you should be fine. I’ve driven since I was like 12 (Not everyday, on holidays mostly) so, I know most of it. Just gotta learn to be more “smooth” in gear changes. I’d say, if I would be you, I’d put lots and lots of time on gear changes and proper clutch control. It’ll make your driving feel more “cool” and not so “panicky” if you know what I mean. After learning to change gears and properly using the clutch, focus on parking BACKWARDS and PARALLEL parking. TRUST ME, if you master both of these, you’ll be more skilled than half the drivers currently out there driving. It might seem hard, but after you learn how to do it properly, you’ll probably start doing it more than normal (forward facing) parking because, let’s agree on this one, it’s more satisfying parking backwards into a space between two cars than it is doing it the “normal” way. Just my opinion tho! I am just a normal dude on the internet, when you get your car is when you realise what you need to improve on! Anyways, this is getting quite long, stay safe!

I've said this in a previous video I believe. But I think clarification is needed. Using mirrors to check if you are centered in your lane is a great way to confirm your position, it helps boost confidence, but only IF you are a new driver and you aren't sure and only going straight and not when on a busy road. Although I think you can check A mirror on a curve, the one closest to the steering wheel, because it is a quick glance. Using them to judge your width when going forward is a bit silly lol.

I wish I could have you around me for 7-10 days while I drive my manual car! Hope you can make a video on eradicating fear for someone who intends to get back to driving after collisions or accidents. Thank you for your work!

At the age of 41, I decided last year to finally embark on getting my drivers license. Now nine months later I had my second drivers exam this morning, and passed it with flying colours! :) First time around it was sheer nerves that got the better of me, and completely misjudging a situation quite early on in the drive that got my already rattled nerves even more rattled. I have a driving license for 3 years now and i still can learn from some of your videos.That video about judging the sides of your car is the best one about this topic that i have found on youtube.I knew about judging the gaps and staying centered way before finding your video, but you explained it on another level.Also before this video I didn t use my mirror when turning close to a car or other obstacle to judge if i m gonna hit it or not.I just made sure that i passed it with half of my car before turning, or just with my side mirror if i have one meter, one meter and a half between my car and the obstacle.Thanks a lot man!

I needed this so much on my second lesson I hit the curb😳 then my instructor had to correct my steering but I have my next lesson tomorrow so this will help a lot

I use the mirrors initially to find pointers on the car as to where i am positioned. So for example, using a straight road and the mirror I figured out that if I align a particular piece of the wiperblade to the road line, I know I am about 20cm away from it, which Is very helpful for tight parking or passing tight spaces. Of course you need to find that spot on every car you drive and also every time someone adjusts the seat. It's not something I rely on, but I think it is a great technique to be able to put the car exactly where you want to

I think the advice to check your wing mirrors for positioning helps if you just do it once in a while as a sort of double check process. Eventually the brain starts to position in lanes and tight spaces somewhat automatically. On a recent drive along two lane roads my husband felt I was too close to the centre line but a quick check with the wing mirrors told me I was pretty much dead centre. We both found this interesting and reassuring.

When going forward in a new car I do use the mirrors when in a straight line to tweak being central in the lane, as show at 2:46. However it doesn't take long before you get used to the new car and spatial awareness becomes second nature.

I did that too for the first couple of months of driving, but since then I now know how to place myself (my car) perfectly between the lanes just by looking ahead.

While I definitely agree that staring in your mirrors too much while driving forwards is a bad idea, something that really helped me stay central when I first started practising in my mum's car were quick glances in both wing mirrors. She told me that I was too far to the right of my lane and at first I couldn't tell or understand how to tell, but quick glances in the wing mirrors made me realise. The centre line to the right looked closer than the kerb to the left. Then I kept my eyes on the road ahead, feeling more comfortable knowing that I had room to the left to move into. I felt a bit stuck before, glued to the same position within my lane because I felt scared of going too far left or right, but simply glancing made me realise how much bigger the lane was than I thought. Also, afterwards I was too far left in my instructor's car and I did the same thing to fix it. I'm pretty sure my instructor's car is wider because I feel further right than I actually am.

Could you do a video on driving in really, really busy town centres at night? Or just night time driving in general? I was driving in one, picking up a friend, at night. I got so blind sided by poor driving from everyone, I got really shaken by the whole experience. It’s like town centres at night have a different set of rules. There’s random stops from Uber drivers in front of a green traffic lights/double yellows. Drunk pedestrians walking onto the road without looking. Cars without lights on so it’s a massive shock when you come across them at night. Driving at night is also like a totally different experience compared to driving during the day. There is more danger involved and inability to see far ahead. I enjoy it more because it’s peaceful. But it would be really good if you could make a video about how to drive at night safely.

Richard, I'm curious what you think of the difference in the Irish test marking schema compared to the UK one. It is broken up into 3 types of faults and there are sections relating to aspects of driving.

@@ConquerDriving Basically it is broken into sections e.g observations, speed, signals etc. For each one there is Grade 1, 2 and 3. If you get any Grade 3 faults, you fail. If you get 4 x Grade 2 faults on a section, it turns into a Grade 3 and you fail. Same if you get recurring Grade 1 faults, it could turn into a Grade 2. I guess the difference is you are limited to how many minor faults you can get on one aspect. Whereas in the UK you can get 15 regardless of what aspect of driving they are in.

Please make a video on going through a very tight space like between two stationary or slow moving cars which are inches away from our car. & one more question- If I stop my car inches away on the left side of a road with curb or wall just about to touch it then if I take a right turn at full steering lock to right side (not needed just curious) then cars back side can touch or not the curb or wall at left side? BTW I appreciate your efforts very much cause here in India, we also drive left & your videos are a boon for a beginner like me. It really made me a safe driver. Have you came here, just asking?

Hi, got a question about the convexity of mirrors. In my country, learners are being taught to only use the wing mirrors most of the time, whether you're changing lane, turning, reversing, parking... I came up with a theory I'd like you to verify, because I am no driving teacher. I think that countries with the warning legend on wing mirrors might just be countries where roads are wider, so instructors may teach there to set the wing mirrors wide ,so you can't see your car in them and then it is probably a problem to judge if you can change direction or not, because you got no reference point - the car. But if you got a snippet of car in your wing mirror, then you got a reference point and I do not see a problem when for example, deciding if you can change lanes or not.

I don't know how instructors in other countries teach pupils to set the mirrors. You are right that seeing a little bit of your car helps you reference where another object is in relation to the car you are driving. The interior mirror is best for judging distance which is why I recommend using the interior mirror and wing mirrors together.

You can't judge the car width from dashboard using mirror when driving ahead, I normally use wiper knob in Prius plus and it's absolutely works fine to judge how far I'm from the curve from right side

I would like to agree to disagree. I agree with most of what u say but left orvm will definitely help me in understanding the distance that I have from the left side of my car to n the end of the road. That helps me with a measurement on how far I can push you the left. Obviously for the right side, I can see straight. 👍🏻

Could you maybe make a video about reversing and judging your distance. My car doesn’t have parking sensors and I find it hard to judge the distance between me and a car behind me sometimes

Your brain coordinates your arms and legs, that's why it is important - always look the solution - the direction forward where you are going to go..especially at bends :). If you stare at the mirrors you will steer the car toward that direction where the mirror is, and that is quite dangerous..

Accept you will slow people down when learning and even when you have a licence. There is no need to stress about this, you have to accept it.

For me the problem is knowing/judging not the distance from the car sides to the walls, but the distance from the wing/side mirrors to the walls. Because they obviously don't appear in the mirrors' images.

If you're close enough to an object to worry about your wing mirror connecting with it, you should be super slow and that will allow you to actually look at the clearance between your wing mirror and the object.

They are not "wing mirrors" , they are "door mirrors", or right or left mirrors or nearside or offside mirrors, attached either to to the "A" Pillar or the front door. Way out of date information. Wing mirrors were originally located on the front wings of cars in the 50s, 60s and 70s (the portion of the body above the wheel well). Just saying... I don't know much about driving...really...!

This is so wrong. If you need to do some delicate manuevers, move your mirrors so you can easily see the side of you car. However, when going down the road, your mirrors should always be set up to SAE specifications. It eliminates blindspots(which dont really exist in passenger vehicles. People are just retarded) and keep people safer on the highway. Do NOT set your mirrors up like this guy has them.
