Judge has strong words for driveway shooter at sentencing

Judge Adam Michelini had some very strong words for Kevin Monahan, before sentencing him in the driveway shooting trial of Kaylin Gillis. Monahan was sentenced to 25 years to life, plus additional time for tampering with evidence.

My truck broke down across the street from some house once. The woman inside the house came out and yelled at me for half an hour to move my car, called me a criminal and accused me of trying to break into her house and then she called the cops on me. Some people are just unhinged sociopaths.

Someone broke down with a flat and pulled into my driveway. It was dark and drizzling outside. I got my jack and tools out and helped them put the spare on quicker. It was a local pizza delivery guy. I got a flat on a holiday weekend and it was a Sunday and I was hours from home. It was a tight back road and I rolled into a driveway. The guy whose driveway I pulled into helped and got his fire chief buddy to leave a cookout to come help out as well. Not everyone shoots people or goes crazy on you for pulling into a driveway.

I can remember getting lost one day driving through a rural area as a teenager. I turned down a long dirt driveway hoping there would be an area I could turn around at. There wasn't and I pulled up to a house and thought, "oh no, I don't want to be here." A few seconds later an angry dude came storming out of his house asking me what I was doing there. You know what he did next? It wasn't pulling out a gun and immediately opening fire. He showed me a place to turn around and guided me out. The defendant clearly was looking for an excuse to shoot somebody. This also shows how sick our society has become.

Hopefully it's a rare occurrence. I've been worried about using someone's driveway to turn around. I travel a lot of county roads. They're the two lane, no shoulder kind, with a 50 mph speed limit. You can either risk a collision, or risk getting shot. I think it's very rare that someone in America would shoot someone like that guy did. Other than Arizona. I think they just passed a law that says it's okay to murder trespassers if you think they're illegal immigrants (so, all brown people? Even though there are Bulgarian and Ukrainian immigrants crossing illegally too). Personally, I was turning around on a rural road and pulled up towards a guys house. The owner came out and said hi. Then, I saw a brick memorial he had built for his son (who had died in high school). It stuck with me because I was so afraid he'd call the cops or shoot me... But, his son had died, and he wasn't mad at the world for it. There wasn't anything I could do to help that father.

About a year ago, there was a minor accident in front of my house. The road is moderately busy and school was letting out of the high school about a half mile down the road. So, to avoid impeding traffic, the cars pulled into my longish, two-car-wide driveway to exchange information and such. I came out of my house to make sure they didn't need anything. They see me and started saying, "I'm so sorry, we'll leave!" I was like, "I'm just making sure no one is hurt. You're fine!" Seeing that one of the cars had a kindergarten-ish-aged passenger that the mother was trying to keep occupied during the long process, I brought out my kids and some sidewalk chalk to play with her. The people acted like I was uncommonly nice and I didn't get it. Apparently, not everyone does that kind of stuff...

A lot of people talking about how this man must be afraid of his own shadow... I disagree. This man doesn't have the emotional capacity to feel fear. I've known people like this. He's lived his whole life wishing he could have the experience of killing someone, but knowing he'd never get away with it. He thought he saw his chance to have that experience and get away with it, so he took it. Simple as that. He wasn't acting out of fear for his life, he was acting out of premeditated malice presented with an unexpected opportunity to express itself.

I was a gun owner, years ago in my early twenties. Looking back there was a couple times I can remember where I realize I did not have proper respect for the power of a weapon. Guns are a right here in the US, but if one does not accept their power responsibily then that person is a fool (case in point). This person let ego destroy all his past work and future dreams. Far worse, he destroyed all of Kaylin’s hopes and dreams, with those of all who know and love her. In an act of sheer stupidity, he pulled that trigger and in a few hundredths of a second wasted 70 years of her life. By all means own a gun if you like, it’s your right, but RESPECT it and LEARN to be a RESPONSIBLE gun owner!

Zero remorse. It's all about HIM. Typical of that element. Having lost a loved one (my 21-year-old youngest brother) to murder, and being denied any sort of trial or justice, I'm at least thankful that justice was served in this tragedy. If Kaylin's loved ones are reading this, I just want you to know you've got a long road ahead, but the day will come, and sooner than you realize, where you'll be at peace. The day will come where you think of her life and the circumstances of her passing will be no more than an afterthought. Being served justice will allow you to overcome your grief and have closure. The person who took our Nick from us still breathes free air and that was something very difficult to accept. Nick left behind doting parents, a sister, and five older brothers in addition to friends and relatives. You'll have days where you won't be able to wrap your head around it all, but always remember there's _someone_ to turn to. Do not be afraid to lean on loved ones for support. Don't be stupid like I was and bottle it up because you don't want to burden friends and family. They're there for you... willing and ready. It's not a journey you can make alone. I wish you all the best.

He would w/o a doubt kill the next person to accidentally drive down his driveway. He doesn't have that grin on his face anymore, does he. But he STILL doesn't believe he did anything wrong.
