Judaism for the World: A Neo-Hasidic Perspective

THE 2021 GERSON D. COHEN MEMORIAL LECTURE
Rabbi Arthur Green, Rector of the Rabbinical School and Irving Brudnick Professor of Jewish Philosophy and Religion, Hebrew College, Boston, in conversation with Professor Arnold M. Eisen, Chancellor emeritus and professor of Jewish Thought, The Jewish Theological Seminary.
Who are we? Why do we exist? Where are we going? How should we live? In his masterful new book, "Judaism for the World: Reflections on God, Life, and Love," Rabbi Arthur Green offers a deeply resonant response to these eternal human questions.
Drawing on over half a century as a Jewish seeker and teacher, he shows us a Judaism that cultivates the life of the spirit. As a leading neo-Hasidic thinker, he is both devotional and boldly questioning in his understanding of God and tradition. Engaging with the mystical sources, he translates the insights of the Hasidic masters into a new accessible religious language, providing a foundation to build an inner life and a society that treasures the divine spark in each person and throughout creation.
The annual Gerson D. Cohen Memorial Lecture was established in 1993 by the Honorable Howard M. Holtzmann (z”l), who served as honorary chairman of the JTS Board of Trustees, as a tribute to Gerson D. Cohen (z”l), chancellor of JTS from 1972 to 1986.

I met Art Green in our youth when he was lecturing at Brooklyn College. He is the same chariamatic, serious and deeply engaging person he was then. Thank you for this presentation.

Thank you JTS and the Presenters: Rabbi Andeleman; Prof. Fishbane; Prof. Eisen; Rabbi Green. There is no limit to how much I have to learn in Yiddishkeit, Torah, Judaism and life. There were a lot of fresh thoughts expressed via the excellent communication of the four presenters. None the less, something shifted in the later minutes. My perspective on "climate change" may be based on a different science angle? Being a former 'hippie' I was alerted to "environmental" issues long ago. What used to be termed 'environmental' has morphed into a dogma first term "global warming" but when the 'warming' science proved inaccurate and incomplete those with vested interests changed the title to "climate change". We knew long ago that there were manmade environmental and polution and urbanisation issues. We now have double the global population since the 1960s or 70s? The 'climate change' folks tend to be oriented towards Left politics. So the important issues of environment, polution, development etc tend to morph into Left politics. That is they become Party oriented virtue signally related to 'who do you vote for'. Whereas the 'environ' issues are for all Humanity and flora fauna. Then following soon came the usual necessary virtue signalling about that particular past President. As a semi-ex-pat who left the USA in August 1979 as I 'saw the writing on the wall', the revered Office of the President of the USA has had a long run of rats in office. By rats I mean mainly career politicians who will virtually say anything to get elected and We The People buy into the myth of 'free elections'. I knew virtually nothing about THAT person before he announced his candidacy but when I saw the immediate reactions from sane people I knew and from the Press what is now referred to as mainstream media, I 'smelled a rat' and in this case I am not talking about any of the ratty Candidates. So I observed and read and listened and very early I said that particular person was going to win because my side 'left' refused to listen to We The People who were simply saying ..... 'something is rotten in the state of Denmark' ie with the then current 'administation' and its Mother Party. From the moment of that particular Candidates candidacy annoucement there was an all out assault. Eventually of course that spread to his 'Party's' other Candidates. It was amazing to see those fools lie, lie, lie like the other Party and see one by one his 'Party's' Candidates give up. It was so obvious to me that he was going to win because 'our side' with the 'right values of the Left' were liars to ourselves so he was only going to win because we were going to lose. So in the last minutes of this wonderful video presentation ..... the cards were exposed. Erstwhile the preaching had been about a dogmaless theology in fact there is a dogma exposed that is: Believers in the Dogma of the scientifically inaacurate "Climate Change" Movement; Believers in the mythological logic of the political system as being correct and honest and accurate; and, there is a whiff of Anti-Orthodox which is undermining the 'global' teshuvah that is now extremely necessary for Am Yisroel (all inclusive) and likely 'our mission' Globally to share our great values within and from our 'orthodox' yet varied practices.
