Nice comments; you and I concur on the movie. My only dislike I had during the movie was the lack of Mary's fiat, "Be it done to me according to thy will." She had the opportunity in a wonderful song she say about being the mother of THE King, but it didn't happen and I was disappointed. However, I'm good with everything else, so much so that I want to see it again with my grown children. Keep up the good work, David!
I heard an interview with the creator and Herod's son in the movie was Antipater not Antipas. He said he wanted someone to be redeemed and he researched Herod's family and it couldn't be Antipas since he took the throne later and was worse that his father and had John the Baprist's killed. But he saw that Antipater was killed by Herod the same year Jesus was born so thought Antipater would be good pick to be redeemed.

Antipater was literally executed right after bribing a guard to release him. None of the Herods had a redemption arc. When it flies in the face of the Bible record, it hurts the film, ruins the message, and greatly waters down the roll of the angels. The way the annunciation is dumbed down and Gabriel is made to look stupid ruined any respect I might have had for the musical.
I loved the music, and this movie really got me thinking how young Mary and Joseph were yet so mature as they carried heavy responsibility!
Lyrics super strong and musically memorable. I have these songs running through my head.
I'll begin by saying I don't got to movies expecting a lesson in theology. I read the Bible myself for that with the guidance of the Holy Spirit therefore I did not find the creative licenses taken to be off-putting. That being said, I saw this movie 3 days ago and can't wait to see it again!!! I very much enjoyed the way in which Mary and Joseph were demonstrated to be human with their anxieties and imperfections. Having read the Bible I can assure you God uses flawed people, and aren't we all?! The music was delightful and I stumbled upon your review while listening to the soundtrack here. I enjoyed every performance and was impressed by the acting of all, particularly of Joel Smallbone as he is not known (until now) as an actor but as a singer who acts in the videos for King and Country. He did an exceptional job. Of course Antonio Banderas is well known as an actor but WOW was he fantastic! Performances by those who played Mary and Joseph were also superb. I thoroughly enjoyed this show and will no doubt watch it until I know every word and song lyric. 🙂
I also loved the small hints of what symbolized Jesus. Lecrae coming down as a cross, the little lamb that lead the shepherd and the Wiseman out of the field, and then laid near Him. I also loved seeing Zacharias and Elizabeth marry Mary and Joseph.
I loved the movie. And will definitely see it again!
Saw it and loved the music. I agree with the "Mary as a Disney Princess" but they moved it along. I'll watch it again.
I saw the movie two times. One on November 9th and the other one on November 12th. I cried during two scenes and my favorite characters were Joseph and Antipater.
Your assessment is DEAD ON. I enjoyed the film. I LOVED every song. I bought the soundtrack before seeing the movie and Josephs song was my least favorite before I saw the movie....Seeing what they did with it in the movie I think that song is brilliant! Here is what I wrote on another video interviewing the writer Saw this Sunday. Spoiler alert: First of all...EVERY song is a bop. They ALL slap and are amazing. Here are some issues with this film. This writer...HAS NO IDEA what made Mary great. They made it for modern audiences with girl boss girl power. They COMPLETELY miss the very thing that made Mary a powerhouse of the faith....her HUMILITY! They were so busy making her an INDEPENDENT STRONG WOMAN.... They forget to include....HER CONSENT TO BECOME THE MOTHER OF THE LIVING GOD!!!! "“I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her." Mary's strength comes from her giving up EVERYTHING for the will of God to be done. She risked her life, reputation, marriage, and family support....for God. She died to herself. THAT is strength! But they SPECIFICALLY took out her consent and humility in order to tell a modern-day feminist narrative. The end is just UTTER ridiculousness. Herod's son enters the nativity scene and....MARY stands up to him like a girl boss. Joseph stands up like a weepy mess, the kings all just kind of stand there....the shepherds dont do anything ....but the STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMAN stands up to the powerful destroyer and slaps his wrist and says....No! like a dog that just peed on the rug and he says "okay my bad" and....LITERALLY orders the guards...that realize who the messiah and His family are....to stand down. And they obey. Sooooo. Herod's troops now know who the parents and child are....see them. let them go..... yet slaughter all the babies anyway after they escape? huh? Here is an idea writer of this movie.... You have this pivotal moment with Herod's son.... and when the guards approach him and say "you found him?" you have the son say "these arent them" and you get the EXACT SAME EFFECT....but this time...its LOGICAL Even after ALL of that above....I still enjoyed the movie. I am just glad I have a basic understanding of the true narrative of the culture and bible. I dont try to fit the bible into modern worldly aspects that actually hinder the true message. God does not FORCE His will on us.

I agree with you!!! This movie could have been much better if they handled it differently. Some parts made no sense. It irked me so much. Part of me enjoyed the ending though. It ended on a hopeful note. The holy family living in peace, happily and safely. Everything that lead up to the moment was just-well not exactly biblically accurate. I didn't like how they made Angel Gabriel like a comic relief at first. He's the angel of God. Have some respect. And the magi did not seem like wise men at all. They were raving fools. I'm a little bit disappointed. There are better renditions of the nativity ofc. I can just rewatch those. But I this had so much potential as a musical. It has been done before by stage plays-in a biblically accurate and revered way. This was way too lighthearted for the nativity. While the message was somewhat clear the gravity and significance of the story was well not conveyed well. I'm just ranting over here. Anyway But let's say Jesus sat down and watched this. I don't think he'd be offended. The producers were trying to tell his story in a different way and theres no harm in that.

I'm going to see this movie this weekend or Monday. Thank you for your review.
Thank you for take your time to explain a little about the movie.
You forgot about Morales Small bone 3:54
Hi David, I think I've been spoiled by The Chosen's Biblical and cultural accuracy. I'm not sure I can enjoy something like this until after my Chosen journey is concluded in a few years. Then I can go back and check out movies like this. Thanks for all your comments. Maybe I'll just get the soundtrack 'cause I love music with good lyrics too.

I actually enjoyed where it departed from cultural accuracy, because it allowed them to be a bit more over the top and theatrical, which I found fitting for a musical

My whole family thought the same. We LOVE The Chosen and the Christmas Nativity they did but this was very good. My dad is a stickler about accuracy but it says at the very beginning that it does take creative license but the main idea is the same. The point is it does the same as The Chosen. It gets people talking about the story and seeking the truth for themselves.

I'm currently watching The Chosen but this movie was a lighter, more fun take. Two different experiences but both valuable.
This movie is awesome I highly recommend it go see the movie you won’t regret it
I saw it and thought it was cute but not biblically correct. Alot was cut out that I thought should have been told
Really i see rachel zegler in Mary. And as the most played scene in churches, the character did not say: "... Let everything you've said happen to me" And Elizabeth scene become so sad instead of happy because John the baptize in her womb is happy. This is so crazy... People could add seasoning but must not get rid any of main igredients.
I absolutely loved the movie! I agree that some of the comedy didn’t lend, especially with Gabriel, but other than that, I really don’t have many complaints.
Thanks for your review. We hope to see it this weekend.
I have not watched the film, but will see it soon
I think your comments are spot on, both positive, mixed and negative. Speaking as a Catholic, I would not show it to children, however I envision it being shown to high schoolers with a follow up discussion. The music is catchy for that age group, and they could well identify with the struggles of Mary and Joseph, however the directors took a lot of literary liberty to bring a traditional story into the modern century. I would also hesitate to show this movie to young children in regards to the scene where Joseph is really struggling with what to do with his "Mary problem." I had a problem with Mary asking Joseph to marry her. I agree with you that Mary's faithfulness to God was underplayed, and Joseph is much younger than tradition seems to indicate.

I feel like it would be a great thing to show children of all ages. Sure High schoolers can interpret it better but it's a great way for everyone to get a better understanding the classic bible story without it being to gory (like the killing of children). I feel like kids would definitely not pick up on the struggling or serious manners throughout the film. I took my kid brother and his friend to it and they were dancing to the music having a good time. Just like in Disneys movies with the adult humor and real world problems they put into the films kids don't necessarily point it out or fully understand it. But in the end it really just comes down to the parents decision.
I agree with most. I think the liberties with Mary and Joseph added more for me thinking about their lives we dont know anything about. The main thing i had an issue with was the Antipeter that you talked about. It also seemed like it could have had a bit more details but i get that they didn't have the time.
אבל מה זה מור?
Some might say This film is an attack upon Christianity.... Take a Serious subject... God's Mighty Salvation and make it " light hearted" and " whimsical"
Turn the gain on your mic down.
I think it did a great job of showing how human they were and that Mary was an ordinary girl who and not someone who should be so revered. And no reason to think Joseph was so perfect either. In fact, all the people God used in scripture were very flawed.
The Nativity of Christ has to do with God's great love for humanity and is Not a theatrical fable to be viewed as entertainment!! Irreverent!
Not a wise nor discerning analysis.
