    The way McGinley's face changes after the line "Where do you think we are" is magnificent. It doesn't show surprise, exactly... it shows the shedding of denial, which is similar to surprise, but not the same. And the sad, heartbreaking half-smile he has for just a split second as he turns away from where Ben's ghost was is exquisite... a look that says, "Oh... right...", and expresses acceptance and despair in a single moment. Marvelous.

I was just left me speechless and stared at a black screen for a few minutes. Deeply impressed. This is just one of the many scene's that made scrubs so special. The laughter, and the tears just a few min's apart from each other. Great show!

    Simultaneously the saddest and most brilliant moment of the entire series. All the episodes with Brandon Fraser are classics.

  • @davidwhite1559
    @davidwhite15599 жыл бұрын

    The build-up to this scene covered three previous episodes, as Dr. Cox grew to see Ben (Brendan Fraser), his brother-in-law, as the closest to an equal that he’d ever had. When Ben's leukemia gets worse, Dr. Cox has a harder time dealing with it than expected. He goes into a form of denial, still seeing Ben at the cemetery, talking to him as if he were still alive. When he notices Ben’s not carrying the camera he swore he’d have ‘till the day he died, and J.D. arrives to interrupt his dialogue, the truth hits home that he’s actually at Ben’s funeral. An amazing scene, revealing both the depth of loss people feel in real life, as well as a fascinating look at the way people avoid dealing with that loss. Combining all that with such a powerful tune as Joshua Radin’s “Winter” was a stroke of genius. This episode was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series, and it should have won.

    I remember when I first watched this episode, and I got to the end and went, wait, what the hell just happened?! And I rewatched from about the point where doctor cox realized where he was (about 00:50) and went, oh... It still didn't really hit me completely until I rewatched it later. Just perfectly shows the state of mind of someone in that situation. Major props to the shoe here

  • @davidwhite1559

    @davidwhite1559

    @@ryanc473 I wholeheartedly agree. The first time I saw that scene, it literally gave me chills. To realize Brendan Fraser's magnificently goofy character, the perfect balance for Cox' unrelenting bullying and cynicism, was gone, just gone! And we the audience, we feel that loss more than any single-episode character I can ever remember watching. That may have been the best character Fraser ever plays, and it really affected a lot of people, I believe, who'd never dealt honestly with the difficulties of losing someone close to them.

    ***** That's actually almost the whole episode after JD's other patient died in the beginning. Because it was actually Ben who died, and the whole episode is about Dr. Cox not being able comprehend that Ben is dead.

    Joshua Radin is a collage friend of Zach. Joshua wasen't famous or anything from the start. He singed some at home, and then once when Zach was invited to play JD in scrubs, he said to Joshua that he should record a song and then Zach could give the song to the producer of Scrubs, and few weeks after it was in Scrubs. And then he become famous. My english is really bad. But u could check the whole story out on google or youtube. Thanks.

    Truly the only GOOD show left on television. Expert writing, acting, use of camera work, and most importantly characters. This episode is the finest moment on Scrubs, because although they are an incredibly funny show, at this moment, they took a very serious moment to touch on something that we rarely get to see shows do. They teach us that life doesn't last forever, even on a medical show, and we should cherish every second with friends, because once they're gone...

    This is such a beautifully powerful scene, that really shows how much better Scrubs is to anything like it.

    We all loved Ben. We loved him for being a goof, for being Perry's best friend, but still standing up for JD. When he dies, you truly feel like youve lost someone.

    Scrubs...what a great show. I´ve cried both happy and sad tears. This episode is amazing...but if you do as I did and watch the other episode (which I think was on tv one season before this one) where Ben is diagnosed leukemia you will really feel this conexion with the character that makes you feel you are watching one of the best shows ever. Thank you Scrubs

    My brother died of a brain haemorrhage in 2004 and my younger brother advised I watched Scrubs to cheer me up. It did. And then I watched this episode. I fell to the floor and sobbed. As now.

    Seriously, I cannot believe how well McGinley conveys so many emotions in just a few seconds. It's the best acting I've ever seen on television.

    To this day, there hasn't been an epic reality hit on a beloved, respected character.... Somehow, because it was Dr. Cox, this hit SOOOOO much harder than it should have.
