Great vid- thanks. I’ve been playing mostly acoustic/classical, but recently decided to learn electric guitar. It’s been a great experience learning and a lot of fun. I played several friends’ guitars ranging from Gibsons, Fender, Jackson and even a Rickenbacker..... shopped around for almost a half a year. I settled on a new MIM Fender Telecaster (butterscotch!). Loving it !

Excellent explanation. Two different tools for two different jobs. With a Strat and a P90 LP Jr. (two out of the three guitars that I own), I'm set for everything I need.

Love your Tele playing Josh, all you playing infact. I had a chuckle though when you played the Led Zep Ocean rift and put it in the Les Paul camp .... it was Tele Page at his best man,v mirrors and all. Cheers dude rock on.

I thought it was known that page only used a tele on the first album? All the rest are using (for the most part) a les paul I think.

i love my strat and tele for there ( single coil ) sound , and i also love my lp ( with classic 57 pick ups ) for it's sound , and for the P90 vibe ( wich in fact is also a single coil pick up ) i use my ES 335 , it's just like josh say's they all have there own sound , and i don't want sell any one off them , i consider myself a lucky guy by owning these 4 great guitars . For the acoustic vibe i use my godin 5 th avenue wich is also fitted with 2 P90 pick ups , it's great for acoustic or electric playing . No need for another guitar though , i'm happy with what i've got .

I appreciate how simply Josh lays everything down with this hear the difference approach! If I was a beginner this would be super helpful for sure.

That scale length is definitely a thing. I tend to spend more time practicing on the longer scale length guitars, because a Gibson with 10s or lighter is just too easy to play. Love 'em though. If I could only have one guitar, it would be a Tele.

Just curious, what does difficulty have to do with preference in this case? Like do you think a guitar being too easy to play makes it less enjoyable, and if so, how come?Usually in my circles playability and comfort come first in a guitar so I'm interested in a different take on this.

@@kokubo399 I seem to play better if I practice on a guitar that makes me work a bit harder. Better calloses. The Les Paul and SG are really fun at that point. None of my guitars are remotely hard to play or have high action.

Ahhhh, what a relief to hear Josh beeing specific and clear about what matters most soundwise in an electric guitar, namely 1) pickups and 2) scalelength! (he could have mentioned the positions of the pickups too, though) And not all that nonsens about rosewood from Madagascar....or who knows from where!

Leave us not forget the Nighthawk HSH 25 1/2 and coil tapping

You can get some nice clean tones with the mini-humbuckers from the Les Paul Deluxe therefore having the best of both worlds. Also if your strings are stretched on a Les Paul, it won't go out of tune when you bend the strings. 😎🎸

i’m sure somebody has already said this but you could go up one gauge of string on the shorter scale then gain back your tension. but i agree with the rest of the premise. I have smaller hands so I like the shorter scale. and I can put single coil pickups on a Gibson style guitar.

Daniel Calzada Daniel Calzada dialed in the amp with the strat? I mess with my amp EQ even when I switch guitars that both have singles because the pickups are different.

Excellent comparison. One thing not mentioned is when a humbucker is added to a Fender Tele or Strat. There's just something magical about a bucker on a 25.5 scale Fender.

A strat will get you amazing clean sounds and yeah, can also do distortion well. A LP gets amazing beefy distorted tones and can be quite versatile under distortion with the individual pickup controls. A telecaster is the perfect in-between of both and will reliably do every kind of sound for you!

Can't deny the smile with the les Paul...

I used to love PRS guitars and their pickups. Then I got a Shabat Lynx with single coil Lollar pups. When they say "how many guitars do you need? Just one more..." I now answer it with "none.. I have a Shabat". I am having him build me a custom lynx for my 50th, though. But I honestly don't even play my PRS private stock and others any more.

When I first started playing I was drawn to buckers... now after a few years I've settled on single coils.

That‘s called „growing up“ ;-)

Single coils work in a trio setting and sound great. If there are keys or another guitar player, a Strat simply gets lost. Not enough mids. Tele bridge pickup will probably still cut though, with some gain.

I don't know I don't think Knopflers strat got too lost in Dire Straits with keyboards and a rhythm guitar player. I'm a Tele guy don't care for Strats but if you know how to eq it properly and dial the to be in right you can cut through almost anything plus a good tube amp.

I ve got 15 elec guitars and I disgree that clean lespaul doesnt sounds good. Its much harder to make it sounds good clean but we All gotta love Joe Perry and his clean Paula do we?

All AMAZING...but also I d'like to listen the clean sound...all sound in this video are with distorsion ....

Nice (and honest) review. I have a Fender Tele MIM and a Gibson LP P90 and I definetly prefer the clarity of my Tele. But on one or other occasion that darkness and muddy sound of the LP is also nice to feel. In overall really nice guitars (but I'll go with single coils)!!

I am barely a guitarist myself, but I pay a LOT of attention to the music I listen to. Sound-wise, I preferred single coils always.

The neck joint actually makes a bigger difference. I have strats with humbuckers and they still sound significantly brighter than my Gibsons. That's not to say that single coils don't make a difference too. Bolt-on guitars just sound snappier and brighter.

I’d love to hear this video again with way less reverb to better hear the differences.

@@paulbasilico very true. It's all about how you play and what style you play as to what will sound the best. Coil splits are for when you need multiple styles in the same sitting, or if you just want that hybrid single coil sound.

Overkill on the reverb here. Great playing though

Do a p90 and wide range

No attempt to adjust the amp EQ before playing the Les Paul. If your amp settings are the same for both of these guitars than you are not showcasing them both at their best.

Crazy difference. That's why I love Hendrix on a Strat, and that's why Jimmy Page loved the Tele especially in the studio. It still surprises me how much more a Les Paul Standard is in terms of cost. You can buy a very nice American Strat and Tele for the price of most good LP Standards. I still love them all.

Cool video, not trying to nitpick, but most Gibson's scale length is 24.75" not 25.625".

Wrong. Officially they’re 24.75”, but in reality most of them are 24.625”. Don’t ask me why

Strat has been my most reliable.

I love pinch harmonics too much so humbuckers only work for me. I have 2 Strats and Teles with humbuckers so I must have the Fender scale length.

Let Josh compare this to: Joe Bonamassa's Les Paul sound... Plenty of videos to disprove his theory..Listen to Larry Carlton, Robin Ford, Albert King, Freddy King, Satriani, Vai, Santana.....All using Humbucking Pickups.......

Please tune the Lp! :))

Well, i play a Gibson 1968 SG jun. so i have the best of both "worlds".

Tele 70s custom with a humbucker in the neck is the perfect best of both worlds cause much nicer guitar than an sg. But that's imo of course.

Truth is Fender gets every tone imaginable in one guitar. And Gibson is the most iconic and synonymous guitar shape. I can rock out with my Tele no problem but, I can’t get a superb dynamic clean tone on a Gibson. Not truly but, at the end of the day, I’m good enough to get what I need outta both guitars. But if I could one have one guitar, it’s be a Fender Telecaster

What's wrong with the amp? Somethings wrong. Also turn the reverb down a bit and get a little better mic, both guitars sound pretty terrible.

I never understood why I never liked les Paul’s. Well that and my bad back tells me.

This is cool. My personal fav is a Fender scale length and humbuckers. Stays in tune, no hum and the scale length adds a bit more clarity and stringiness to the sound.

P-90s are the best of both worlds

Love the playing, but try this with a better Les Paul. I wasn’t impressed with that one at all. For example, I can turn down the volume on my LP and it cleans ups beautifully, while retaining the highs. The way it is wired has so much to with it. Personally, I think people tend to have a somewhat cliched view of Les Pauls because we all grew up with that Les-Paul-through-a-cranked-Marshall sound ingrained in our brains. They’re much more versatile than that. My brain prefers the sound of an LP for single-note lead playing, because the notes seem fuller and rounder. It just works better for me. I’m not talking about my playing, because I suck. I’m thinking more of someone like B.B. King (not an LP, but you get my drift) or Peter Green, or Mahavishnu Orchestra-era John McLaughlin, or even Slash. But don’t get me wrong because Fenders sound amazing too. It’s all good! I’ve actually been on a Roy Buchanan kick lately and it doesn’t get more Fender than that.😉

Gibson or Fender. Different tools for different jobs. There is not a better one out of the two. If they both ring and sing it's for me. That's why I have and play both lol.

Honestly to my ear neither guitar sounded great with the amp pushing so hard. Both have their applications and both shine in certain situations.

Different guitars, different uses.

Not all Gibson guitars have a short scale. L5 and Super 400 don't.

So many critics here: "Oh, that amp sounds horrible!" "Jeebuz, turn down the reverb!" Yes, please educate us all on how to get good tone.. And while you're at it, post a link to your playing and getting killer tones. [crickets] Yep, just what I thought.

Single coil all day

Single coils aren‘t noisy, they‘re hummy. Humbuckers are not called noisebuckers. The humbucker was not invented for sound reasons but for hum reduction. That’s a technical thing, not connected to the art of music. The price you pay: the high range overtones that make up for a rich inspiring sound. I once had a Strat with a humbucker at the bridge. With it’s coil split option it gave me a direct comparison. Instinctively I changed back to single coil whenever the humbucking was on. They sound so pulpy. Playing humbuckers is like painting a rainbow in the gray scale.

I'VE BEEN SELLING AND FIXING GUITARS AND AMPS FOR 45 YEARS.... I think for most players, it's more left brain/right brain than considering all the particulars mentioned. You either hear one or the other in "your sound" and just make it work for yourself. Josh has pointed out why Single coils work for him and humbuckers don't. IT'S THAT SIMPLE.

Yes. Exactly. Josh is a fantastic player but this was not fair on the Les Paul.I love Tele's by the way, play them half of the time. Anyone agrees there's a strong connection between Tele's and les Paul's ? I mean people tend to switch between those two, Strats are something entirely different.
