Alabama goes 4-2 in the first half of the season, then goes 6-0 because the DeBoer system starts to click with the players. Bama makes a serious run in the playoff, plays for the national title.

Look at it on paper: A playoff team just hired another playoff team’s head coach. A head coach with a 104-12 win/loss record. As a Tennessee fan, I recognize this as possibly the best hire they could have made in their situation. He’s gonna be really good

Especially in the short term, I don’t understand why no one brings up the fact that you have Saban coaches players on a roster that didn’t have their memory wiped when Saban retired and you’re combining that with new winning philosophies and coaching from a coach who also maximized talent a year prior. It’s actually not out of the realm of possibilities that this could be the best Bama team in years.

Only Bama can bring any and everything out of the woodwork when Bama football is the subject, and even when it’s not the subject. It’s Alabama. People love it, others hate it (I find that a strong word but it’s probably true). It rankles some people. Every emotion associated with CFB comes into play with Alabama football. That’s been the case at least since I’ve been a fan, a little Bear loving Bama fan. It’s been longer than that though, and it’s just because it’s Bama. We set the gold standard. You can go out of the country and people everywhere know “Roll Tide,” and it doesn’t matter where you are. They know football, the Bear, Saban, the b&w houndstooth, the Crimson and White uniforms that have never changed - they know everything. Steely Dan even put ‘Crimson Tide’ in a song, one that everybody knows and loves, most likely. Alabama gets attention everywhere. It’s ALABAMA. Roll Tide 🐘🏈

When Washington fired Jimmy Lake and the coaching search began, the fans wanted either the Iowa State coach or Baylor coach. And Jen Cohen the Ad went after them hard, but they turned her down. Chris Petersen told her to look at kalen DeBoer down at Fresno State. So she hired him and all he did was expose the rest of college football to what is considered a top 5 coach. Can Kalen DeBoer win big at Bama? Can a bear sh** in the woods? Football is football... to a genius it's how you end up with Kalen's win loss record. Keep questioning Josh. LOL

I think there are going to be a lot of people who know what their foot tastes like come January. You have a bunch of 4-5 star players who have all been coached by Saban, who are now being introduced to new and proven concepts with an intense coach and staff who are quite possibly better than the overall Alabama staff was last year. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if Bama makes a deep CFP run and is a threat to win the National Championship their first year out. To answer your question though, I say 10+ regular season wins, an offense that is regularly in the 40-50 point range, any loss has to be a close loss, and a top 10 recruiting class. If all that happens, it will prove to everyone that DeBoer is for real. However I think he will far exceed that.

Success will always be measured at Alabama by level of competition for conference titles and the pursuit of National Championships. Year 1 success for Deboer is a playoff berth and a top 10 recruiting class. Courtney Morgan, Eron Hodges, and others will be instrumental in accomplishing this.

if we're talking year one for success or not I think a 10 win season is a big success. Alabama plays likely #1 UGA and likely top 15 LSU, Tennessee, Missouri, Oklahoma, and let's not forget about auburn. That would be going 4-2 against the potential top 15 and would very likely put alabama in to the playoff. 11-1 is overachieving, 12-0 and people will lose their minds. Recruiting wise, I think he'll need to regularly be in the top 10-15 range to be considered a success with a reprieve on year 1 (at least from me). Roll tide and wish him massive success!

It's going to be harder for DeBoer and any other SEC coach to win at scale Saban did for several reasons: 1- Addition of Texas and Oklahoma 2- Schools other than Bama are starting to recruit at elite Saban level or closing in, i.e. Georgia, Texas, etc., and Auburn just had its best recruiting in years with solid top 10 class. 3- Transfer portal and NIL, nuff said. 4- Facilities. Bama under Saban built up best facilities in nation, other SEC schools decided to pay up and have closed gap, catching up to Bama. IMO one big ace up sleeve Bama has always had under Saban is its outstanding graduation, APR rate, usually ranking in top 2 in SEC and top 3 or 4 nationally. I think this past year Bama was ranked number one in SEC. This aspect of program will always be a draw to many recruits and parents. But with NIL money, who knows now.

Also, newsflash, following an elite head coach isn’t an impossible task. You can succeed doing so. Kirby followed Mark Richt who won ten games pretty consistently at a Georgia program that really never had great natty expectations. Ryan Day follows Urban Meyer and has lost 8 games since. Lincoln Riley followed Stoops and had many great season, playoffs made and two heismans. Les Miles followed Saban at LSU and won a natty and made another. Meyer followed Spurrier a few years later and brought Florida to new heights, without ever coaching in the SEC. Meyer followed Tressel after a year and took Ohio State to a natty. Just because you followed a great doesn’t doesn’t mean you can’t succeed. Saban success the past three seasons is not insurmountable. In fact, you can easily argue DeBoer himself has had more success the last two seasons that Saban has. Both 11-2 in 2022, 14-1 vs 12-2 in 2023 with KDB beating Texas in Nola and being up comfortably late in the fourth, and Saban losing by ten at home.

Predicting DeBoer’s success has to happen in two phases: with and without Saban’s players. DeBoer has won everywhere he’s been with all different levels of talent, and has taken a lesser talented team to the national championship, beating a team Bama couldn’t to do it. He’s done so without ever having his roster filled with players he recruited, and he’s interiting the best roster in CFB. He’ll win and he’ll win a lot in the first 2-3 years. How well he does in that time, either 9-10 wins good or making a playoff run good, will determine the rest. Momentum will help his recruiting adjustment down the line, but DeBoer needs to at least overpreform this season to prove to elite recruits he makes Bama worth playing for without Saban. DeBoer hasn’t been the best recruiter, although his proof of concept hasn’t really been very evident up until this previous season. At the end of the day, you can be a good recruiter or a bad one, but one thing is a better sell to a player than anything else, and that’s winning games. I don’t believe Saban was just the best used-car salesmen ever, he told players they would win and make the leauge if they played for him and dammit he was right. DeBoer has to win to do that. Don’t think too hard about it, DeBeor is a great coach with a top-roster, he can absolutely compete with the best of them this year if all goes according to plan. If he does, whether he can channel that momentum to recruiting will be the bigger question.
