Josh Hill address Opiates in Motocross - Gypsy Tales Podcast

Спорт

The problem of Opiates isn't unique to the sport of Motocross and Supercross but with the rate at which it's participants are injured, there is certainly a cause for concern. This is especially true in some of the younger athletes who are at risk of losing rides and feel the pressure to either return from, or ride through injury.
As someone who has had massive crashes and injuries, Josh Hill knows first hand that they are a slippery slope!

The Opiate situation with some doctors handing it out like candy and then others refusing even when it's needed sounds just like mental health doctors and Xanax. Some flood the streets, others won't give it to someone that needs it to function. So sad all around.

So correct, if you are in real pain morphine (heroin) will barely take the edge off. even a bad toothache warrants a good dose, but good luck getting any at the chemist, they'll probably call the cops. In fact, there is a worldwide shortage of morphine take it from a junky who has done it like an 80's rockstar. "Although morphine is cheap, people in poorer countries often do not have access to it. According to a 2005 estimate by the International Narcotics Control Board, six countries (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States) consume 79% of the world's morphine. The less affluent countries, accounting for 80% of the world's population, consumed only about 6% of the global morphine supply.[134] Some countries[which?] import virtually no morphine, and in others[which?] the drug is rarely available even for relieving severe pain while dying.[135] Experts in pain management attribute the under-distribution of morphine to an unwarranted fear of the drug's potential for addiction and abuse. While morphine is clearly addictive, Western doctors believe it is worthwhile to use the drug and then wean the patient off when the treatment is over.[136]

"Tens of Millions Face Death in Agony; Human Rights Watch found that in 35 of 192 countries reviewed, fewer than 1 percent of patients with moderate to severe pain from terminal cancer or HIV could get the strong pain medications they needed. These countries are concentrated in Sub-Saharan Africa, but some are in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Central America. Availability of strong pain medications is very limited in many of the world's most populous countries, Human Rights Watch found. At least 100,000 people die from cancer or HIV/AIDS each year without access to adequate pain treatment in countries such as China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Russia, and South Africa. www.hrw.org/news/2011/06/02/global-tens-millions-face-death-agony

Really appreciate his honesty here. It's true what he said about the doctors giving pain meds, though it depends on the doctor. I work for an ER, and I've seen people shot multiple times and the doctor tells them to alternate Advil and Tylenol for pain. And I've seen other doctors give opiates for essentially a stubbed toe. Can't tell you how many addictions I've seen start with a legitimate Rx for a real injury. It's really sad, and it effects everyone to some degree.

@Jonathan Spier dude cmon you’re joking right ppl die from seizures, and other shit when in withdrawal, if u didn’t have the cold sweats then u never had withdrawal, the first thing that hits is the yawns and slight body aches then it goes straight to temperature rapidly changing (this is what frys ppl, and ends up giving them seizures) and i never brought up alcohol i know that’s number one. but depending on how much u did is how u withdrawal, fenty users can’t even use methadone only subox because of how strong this new shit is, all street pills are fentanyl now too hence why i was so fucked. the pill form by itself is stronger than H. but my point still stands that opiate withdrawal is one of the worst things a person can go through especially a fenty user, nowadays anyone at least in cali can get methadone or subox treatment for free, so i guess nowadays there’s no reason to ever withdrawal. but i think most past addicts would agree that they never would want to withdrawal again and that’s enough to stay away.

I broke my femur in 2010, along with a pile of concussions and the typical moto injuries. This is a topic I hope to see come out into the light in the future. Growing up in north west florida is a big moto community and a lot of people turned their back on me and others that medicated naturally instead of opiates after injuries. It's a tough road of addiction and nobody should go down it alone.

I ended up on oxycodone for almost 6 years, 3 of those years were prescribed. I had my knee replaced and I wasn't told the nerve blocks wouldn't be as effective due to the oxy. I woke up from anesthesia begging for them to cut my leg off or put me under because the pain was so bad. 2 nerve blocks did nothing for me, I could still move my toes and flex my quad. After that I was done with pain killers. For anyone trying to quit- try to ween yourself off by reducing mg each time and wait till you feel withdrawals before your next dose. Wait longer between doses and continue to reduce amount until your only taking 10mg a day. (Should take 7-10 days) Once your there you're no longer dependant. That's how I stopped, quitting cold turkey is brutal

I work at the state level doing communications to prevent opioid misuse and overdose prevention. My six months in this job has been eye-opening, and based on my years in this sport, unfortunately motocross racers appear to be a truly high risk group. Injuries are common, and honestly I feel like we have pretty addictive personalities anyway. Adding to that, doctors really receive minimal education on how to properly taper dosages for patients they have prescribed them to. A person can become dependent on opioid pain killers in as little as 3-5 days, and that message needs to reach our community. Right now the best practice for pain management is ibuprofen and acetaminophen. It isn't going to make you feel as good as opioids in the short term, but it also doesn't carry a risk of addiction. I appreciate that you are bringing this topic up in discussion, because I feel like it is something that all parents and families need to know!

The SX/MX scene tries harder than any other extreme sport to maintain a squeaky clean image. Anything that is slightly outside of the cookie cutter sport/sponsor image is immediately axed, ostracized, and swept under the rug. He's right with Dr's being too generous and then not sympathetic enough. Proper physical rehabilitaion is the most important way to fix yourself. Unfortunately, most rehab dr's don't know what they are doing. The pain medication should be used as a crutch so you can strngthen your body with a proper exercise/stretching routine, not so you can just veg out on the couch and play videogames. Obviously the severity of some injuries will require more time just laying around or a slower approach to their physical rehab . When the patient isn't taking the initiative to rehabilitate themselves cause they like the feeling of opiates, they are onnly screwing up their pain receptors which makes them more dependent on opiates.

I was scared of getting addicted so I flushed the rest down the toilet and dealt with a couple days of just pure depression. Crazy stuff.

I wasn't a racer, I just liked going fast and jumping. When I was 14 I broke my back in 2 places, broke a few ribs and had a pierced lung, broken arm. The doctor gave me a script for oxys. Three 80mg a day. I was 6 foot tall and maybe weighed 115lbs. I almost ODed 3 times in the first month. Spent the next 3 years on oxys and hydros then the next almost 13 years on methadone because it was "safer" and it was clear I had a problem. Josh is right, I was born in 88, no one talked about opiates besides heroin, they didn't include it in DARE programs and it was easy to trust doctors and just go with whatever they gave you. For me personally, I had insomnia, social anxiety, adhd and constant pain from a stomach disease, pills fixed all my issues or they seemed like they did. I felt normal for once and my brain was calm. I didn't know it was a problem until it was too late. Even going through all that I still feel like pain pills have their place but you need someone to hold you accountable if you can't do it by yourself. It's just sad so many people got thrown away. It's hard to justify people treating you different because you aren't shooting up or buying off the street. It's just twisted. I just wanna ride my bike and have fun and that's what helped clean me up.

It's gotta be tough for pro MX racers. Ik pain is a constant battle. Some will be able to use opiates properly. But others, like myself, chemically respond differently & immediately realize that not only is the pain being reduced, but so are mental & emotional issues that u may be battling with, creating an almost immediate dependency. & MX being a sport where riders have to deal with injuries on a regular basis, addiction must be a serious obstacle that more riders than we ever thought are prolly dealing with. I def think there should be some sort of easily accessible support system, whether from the AMA, a sponsor, or just set up by someone in the industry, for riders who need help, guidance, encouragement, counseling, facility where they can detox, or whatever it takes to help them get over an addiction problem & keep it as discreet as they need it to be. Riders who happen to develop a problem shouldn't have to worry about being looked down on or like they need to hide it in fear of ruining their career which only compounds the problem. The MX community should have eachother backs, look out for one another & def try to have something available to these guys to get help if they need it.

Can I lend you a hand? It is real and it has the grip of death. If you want to know a little about it .... think about sweating profusely all the while having the feeling that you are rolling off the edge of your bed in the dark over and over. Or getting a shot of adrenaline from being scared. Extremely restless as in cant get comfortable in any position. Cant sleep, don't care about eating or doing something you enjoy. Body is painful for no reason. Just about the time you think it has subsided it starts again, it is perpetual and not effected by willpower. I am 20 years into it and I have had about everything derived from poppy or a lab trying to synthesize it. I have managed to bring my dose down to a reasonable level to remain therapeutic, but even now I dont think I can go without it. I function, but I know my mind is not what it used to be. To preface this, I have a clotting disorder that has left my once athletic body a mess from all of the clots in my legs and lungs. I also have herniated discs in both my lower lumbar and my cervical spine that need repaired. I also have spinal stenosis. I am in pain 24/7/365 and not mild pain. The meds help, but I also do not like that they have changed me. I lowered my dose on my own. I took it down to where the pain was intolerable and then raised it just enough to tip the relief balance in the favor of more relief than pain, but it is still a daily struggle. Oh well, enough .... sorry for the long post. I am 52. I was once a D1 wrestler and I did a lot of MX racing so it is a hard pill to swallow - pun intended.

It would be awesome to see AMA embrace more THC in pain management. Everyone is worried about the image of the sport; kids don't need athletes to know about weed or partake. It's been around society for centuries. Others worried about athletes abusing it; what would be the difference between someone just not wanting to put in the work vs someone not wanting to put in the work because they wanna smoke? Wish Josh would talk more on it, along with other racers. Other sports are starting to ease up, MX should be right there with them, especially when opiates are so detrimental to general life far beyond an MX career. It's bad for the athletes to just constantly be pushed that way.
