Mateo brings so much to this team. Incredible defense and base running skills. And even thought he has been hitting below average--he makes up for it by saving runs w/his glove & manufacturing runs when on base.

he needs to bat better then 215. field ing is great but does not good when your not driving in runs either, every good short stop in the game now hits for average as well as has a good glove.

I have words for those not paying attention. There is a reason why Palmer talks about Belanger. Palmer would not have been as good without Brooks and Belanger (oh, and Grich...). Look at Nolan Ryan. He never played with an infield behind him that was that good.

If his bat can reach half the level that his glove is at. Then he should be our starting SS for the next few years

At most he's the SS until Holliday gets here sometime in 2024. But I would be surprised if he is still on the roster by the All Star break. I think they use him as trade bait in a package deal to get a corner OF with power, or a stud pitcher. Modern analytics puts too much emphasis on OBP to allow a .267 OBP player to be a regular. And that number is no fluke-his career OBP is only .271.

@@squiiindo Hahahaha-Now THAT is an understatement!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so glad to be 100% wrong on this one, though the Holliday factor still plays into the future. With Mateo's range and arm, and now power, he could likely make a good corner OF. He did play some CF in SD, so that might be a future move the O's could make with him. An OF with Mullins and Mateo in LF and CF would not have too many hits falling in.

love him in the field but if he cant hit over 220 what's the use. Your short stop needs to put up number on both sides of the ball,. If he could bat 280 he would be one of the best in the game if he gets on hes a double every time with that speed

I don't think you know much about the history of baseball. MARK BELANGER. They are not the same... But Belanger kept himself in the lineup with his glove. If you ever listen to Palmer talk about the guys playing behind him, he thinks Mateo is as good as the best. That means Mike Bordick (.260), Mark Belanger (.228), Luis Aparicio. The game is not just about offense. He is saving runs on the other side of the ball.

I don't know how he did NOT win the GG and wasn't even a finalist. At least he got that other award. And I was surprised when Urias won at 3B. The thought that duo might break up on the left side is sad. But it makes you wonder what exactly is to come in '23. I'm guessing Urias wins the utility GG. PLEASE leave Mateo at SS. He is making every Os pitcher better.
