    I went through this in my early 20's. It changed my life immeasurably when I stopped parroting without understanding or supporting with evidence. I could hear myself, exactly as he described. This is why I'm adamant that talking is so important to discovering how we really feel about something: we can hear our own doubt and bullshit. It's also why we should be allowed to verbalise a thought without fear of recrimination, as fear of speaking inhibits understanding.

    What I do when I hear my self doubt is start a discussion with it. For example if I think while talking "what you're saying is bullshit" I then ask "what do you really think,and why?" And I keep going until i'm satisfied. Science and philosophy really helped me with making sense of what I felt.

This problem I have that Jordan speaking of has caused me some issues. The first way to fixing this I would assume is by realizing your problem.

    The thing I enjoy about Peterson as a new listener is that listening to him, and I don't mean as an insult, it sounds like a train of association. He doesn't seem to make eye contact, he talks looking down or eyes closed, he carefully considers what he says and he speaks precisely, and he goes on short rabbit trails, so when I listen to him I feel I'm getting the rock bottom truth and I'd better listen because I won't be hearing it the same way again.

The Interviewer asked what he was going to do about it? And he replied. *"I say what I think"*

    I think of all the things Peterson has talked about, this was the single most powerful revelation in my life. Ever since I took this advice to heart, not only have I stopped feeling weak, but my words appear to be causing the world to reorient itself tiny bit by bit. Sidebar: I'm surprised Peterson didn't point out that one of the alternate definitions for "true" is something like "properly aligned." Eg "the arrow flew true to its target."

    Jon VC Can you give me an example of something that makes you weak? I'm having trouble with this concept. I have an idea of what it means, but exactly what kind of weakness here confuses me.

  • @hieronymushumble5716

    @hieronymushumble5716

    7 жыл бұрын

    Any lie that you tell which you then choose to embody makes you weak. Cowardice is one such lie that I recently won a huge victory against. Cowardice works as follows: First, there's something you know you ought to do, because it is good and proper that you do so. Ask out the cute girl at work, tell a friend they are doing damage to themselves, or have a talk with a family member who is struggling. The lie is embodied in inaction, and the lie is something along the lines of, "I'd probably be worse off and it wouldn't really do any good anyway." My recent victory was in the first scenario. Turns out the girl at work had a boyfriend, probably the outcome I imagined was 90% likely. How is that not a loss for me? Well firstly, just approaching her was a heroic action, leading me to think things like "is this really me? I didn't know I was this brave." Secondly, I came to realize that nothing really bad happened. Thirdly, now that the truth has been spoken, I don't have to bloody wonder every time I see her what might happen. Fourthly, maybe this girl wasn't aware of my interest, and she will now consider why she's been with the same guy forever with nary a ring on her finger, which would probably benefit her at the least (she looks for someone who sweeps her off her feet like she deserves). So yes, this was a major victory in making myself more brave. It all started by seeing myself say something like, "It'd be ok if I never..." and then call myself on that lie.

  • @hieronymushumble5716

    @hieronymushumble5716

    7 жыл бұрын

    JediNiyte Like Peterson says, start examining what you have been saying. Watch for things that make you think: 1 that's not true, 2 you don't mean that, 3 that's not your idea. Basically watch how you speak and act in most situations, and see if you tried to weasel out of fully and forthrightly confronting the situation. It's a long process trying to find your alignment, start with the things most obviously wrong. One thing I've been incorporating lately is eliminating any actions which needlessly tear someone else down. Usually this means my ideas are too weak to stand near others.

  • @QuietDuplicity

    @QuietDuplicity

    7 жыл бұрын

    Jon VC - In addition to your first point "that's not true" I would also say to watch for things that are, as Jordan Peterson puts it, _false truths_. Namely those things that are technically true but your habitual language patterns when talking or thinking about the situation undermine your own strength or place you as a victim rather than just an unwilling participant. I know it sounds like new-agey self-help advice but addressing self defeating language patterns and replacing them with empowering language patterns can go a long way to improving yourself. Just don't delude yourself, just lean slightly to the more positive side of the truth rather than either extreme.

    Joseph Baron I had the exact same event happen to me lol, one night I got to talking with a friend about all of this, or something similar anyway, and it exposes to yourself what your ideals are vs. what you say and what your motives are. You’re right to say it is a sort of cognitive dissonance, best way I could label this problem. Two conflicting ideas, with an inability to side with one or the other. The seeming length of the day is due to two things. One, how active you keep your mind and imagination once you can do the job without much, if any conscious thought. And two, how busy doing the job you really are. The second depends on the kind of job and how much need there is for the job itself. The more needed it is, the busier and less long the day will seem. The less there is to actually physically (or mentally) do, the longer the day will seem. It's a sort of conundrum, really, because this all also depends on how much you like the job. If you hate it, time will seem to slow down. If you enjoy it time will seem to be moving normally, or a bit faster than expected. If you love the job, time spent doing it will seem to fly by. Perspective is important in art. It's as important, if not more, in day to day life. Each of those "selves" he speaks of in this video is a perspective on something. Poor perspective makes the view from it difficult or impossible to see what it is you're trying to see. Try keeping all that verbal commentary to yourself for extended periods while trying to think of better, more important, more applicable things to say. That will help the interminable days pass at least a bit more quickly.

    It happened to me too I felt like that when I was talking to friends and sometimes to be agreeable or to not to offend people my words change or bend and then I feel like my inner judge is judging while i talk and i felt off..but when I talked to my husband I can only speak honestly and I felt just like what he described aligned and I can feel how my inner judge gives me peace and comfort. Since then i try to become more aware of this feeling I can't go back to my old habit..I just only speak what is in my heart and the truth as i see it which changed everything. And it gave me more courage to bare everything to my husband to anybody who is close to me and it just made me closer to them. As if now I always have to answer to that inner judge in me whether what I am doing or thinking is right. This makes us aware and more responsible of our own actions. And I realized that doing our best to do what we think is right all the time we have a chance gives us peace inside. We cannot control anything ..good and bad things will happen to us but the only thing we can control is our actions.

I don't know if this is wholly applicable and true but I can sure vouch I am much less distressed or brooding about such things when I am very busy then when I am sitting relaxing. peace y'all.

    Right, the balancing opposite here would be not to completely stop talking. I recognise scrutinising everything I say, concluding I have nothing of value to add, so I'll just shut my mouth, but that's not quite right either. Maybe I'm coming from the opposing part of the spectrum, but what helped me was exactly speak out more. Aligning your deepest being with what you say can also mean just speaking the truth you don't easily dare to speak. Not speaking your mind at all is another pitfall. The guilt of not being open and honest sure as hell feels weak.

But you can't just listen to him passively to understand these things, you have to listen with open ears and eyes to really delve into what he's saying and imagine the things he's talking about, that's where you get the most from listening to Jordan. I’m going through this burning off dead wood. It’s only been a few weeks but it feels real good and I can’t wait to see how much better it gets. It amazing what happens when you shut up and actually listen to yourself. It’s like my brain has been talking over my conscience all my life while my conscience has been watching and waiting patiently. Waiting for the moment to say “ Are you done with all this manic behavior and fed up with all this stress, anxiety and general depression? Now I’m going to teach you how to truly be someone”. Now when I speak an untruth like embellishing a story I hear it speaking to me telling me that’s not true and to correct it. Or when someone is talking to me, instead of thinking of what I want to say next it tells me to shut up and listen to that person and you might actually learn something. It’s also telling me to be genuinely nice to people and not just because social norms compel me. Also not to judge people when you see them, you find how interesting some people really are. I’ve learned this all from listening to JP. If you just try to listen to your conscience like JP is saying, you will find out that your conscience is a fast teacher.

    CSG Be careful about "speaking emotionally." What you imply is that you are not speaking the truth. To start with emotion first is backwards... what you ought to do is speak the best version of the truth you know, and emotions come along for the ride so to speak. It's the best way to overcome and process things causing you internal chaos.

  • @hankhilldoeshisthing

    @hankhilldoeshisthing

    7 жыл бұрын

    I think "truth" can take away the spice of life. If you bring emotion out first, then the honest truth one *feels* in their unfiltered soul, is solid. It doesn't make it objectively true, but it lays out a foundation to work from. It can always be countered with logic, when challenged. Then, when it is challenged correctly, people can learn from that different perspective truth. I think it is rare for someone to research the "truth," so taking a blind shot with emotion about whatever topic is a better starting point. Then adjust it with logic as you go along and create different scenarios that try to continually challenge the previous thought, etc. etc. then we can all stop talking 95% of the time, and can probably agree on something that we both think of at some point to be true. Which I guess causes internal chaos to even begin thinking, but at least the emotion can expose the idea, which can eventually lead to the truth. For instance, I could say, "okay, you're right" and avoid any internal chaos, because I understand what you mean, but I'd rather toss out my idea. Like he said "trouble is more interesting than boring", even though I know I should probably should not say anything, and go on with my day and play with scenarios you can reply with or for what you mean and argue in my head, but..nah. -- But yeah, all I'm saying is that emotion is a good starting point to lead to the "truth." Then the emotions that come with it are just, there. But it sucks, because you have to battle every possible thought that can come to your head that would counter your other thought, and so on which leads to silence. -- Then again sometimes you need instinct to survive, and the raw emotions from fear can save you. -- Eh, never mind forget I said anything.

  • @hieronymushumble5716

    @hieronymushumble5716

    +CSG I'd like to partially apologize for what I said about speaking with emotion first... there are times when this is useful. Basically, speaking with emotion first is a request for help.. it means there's something you can't figure out logically, but it is too painful or uncomfortable to keep it in. One practice I've been using is this... when I'm talking with someone about something I am passionate about, or something about which I don't feel as certain as I could, I simply change what passionate statement I was going to make into a question. This is actually a decently good way to handle the situation, because a question means you are not speaking with the certainty of truth, imposing your view of the world on the other person. The question also leads to more detailed information and discussion, which will likely bring the interlocutors closer to one another.

    Maybe I am mistaken but it seems to me that what you are doing when using a source this way is something that is called appeal to authority. A good idea should stand by itself, it does not need namedropping. I don't understand why you would need to use a source to present an idea or a concept. If you like the idea and understand it, you can explain it in your own words. If you can't explain it in your own words, I suggest exploring the idea until you can. One example of when I think referring to someone in this manner is when you want to discuss a particular statement of person when you do not necessarily agree with the statement but are interested in discussing the statement.

And there I was, The tractor gives more people free-hands to do other things it should be amazing! . . . But what about the workers who don't currently have a job? I found my self trying to find arguements to win to make my world-view prevail as the ultimate thing but I had no clue! Is the tractor good for communism breaking the way of life for the lower classes? creating sweat-shops in citys for the rich? Needless to say the fact I was grasping for straws trying to win, Eventually made me look patethic to my inner critic and I started correcting that behaviour, Now I'm a Capitalist who belives in a strong community and strong middleclass to be able to maintain a healthy economy, And self improvement is my main mantra.

    Personal Power If burning away your dead wood leaves you with 0.0001% of what you had, it's still worth doing. You create a lot of empty space for something new to arise from the ashes. You have no idea how powerful the truth will make you if you try.

    _I said, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence.” I was mute and silent; I held my peace to no avail, and my distress grew worse._

    @Jon VC When you burn this dead wood you remove people from your life that will be offended by the removal of this wood. Hence I would add Epicurus to that statement: Those he cannot win over he seeks to keep neutral. Failing this, he either avoids associating with them or forcibly ejects them from his life.

    Could somebody explain to me what he means with "weak"? With "Stop saying things that make you weak" I think of downtalking oneself, but I suppose that´s not what he means, or?

    I took it as things you don't fully believe or like to say yourself. My own negative thoughts about the things I say make me weak when I don't like what I am saying.

    Saying things which you know are not true destroys your integrity...it breaks you down and makes you weak.

    Your brain watches you and the more you retreat from “your conscience” the lower it places you on the dominance hierarchy. In turn, your brain chemistry changes along with it.. then your body language. So on and so forth.

    Speaking truth takes few words, like when God speaks, He says, "Go." or "I AM that I AM." so "A truly wise person uses few words" Proverbs 17:27 Most people babel on trying to give an image they have wisdom.

    I have always referred to this subject as the 1 and 2. The 1 generally "knee-jerk" reacts and the 2 is a little more "sensible and questioning". I feel that we all have this in us.

    Yes we need to get in harmony with our real self. In the Bhagavad Gita Krishna says the real self is a fragment of Him and has all of His qualities but in minute quantity. Those qualities are that we are eternal , full of knowledge, and blissful. By fully surrendering to Him, who is in our heart, and also outside, we can fully overcome our weaknesses. As Lord Jesus has said "Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

    But what if saying "good morning" or "hello" feels hypocritical? I understand that basic politeness is a lube necessary to keep society rolling and that living in a city is way easier than alone in the wilderness, but by using formalities and such, I feel like I'm just mindlessly repeating phrases that I never have actually thought.

    I’ve really been thinking about this feeling with no idea as to what it is or what I could call it, but I experience the exact same thing he’s describing; I did think about the word “watching” myself, and I could easily manipulate it in most cases, as that part of my “psyche” as he put it isn’t quite human, rather it’s an unconscious, sort of otherworldly observer that has nothing else to relate to; the concept of plants “watching” or listening is a close similarity if you believe in that. Really love this guy, he’s helped me immensely
