    Peterson argues you can look at lobsters and if you anthropomorphize their behavior as affected by serotonin levels, you reveal insight to human behavior, specifically hierarchies. He reiterates that serotonin levels in lobsters and humans is the key underpinning to this argument. To compare lobsters, which don't have anything resembling a human brain (it is more a collection of ganglia than a brain) and their neurological systems to a human one through the lens of serotonin levels, is reductionist to the point of stupidity. The human brain is malleable and plastic; to compare the presence of a nearly universal neurotransmitter from a crustacean to a human is unscientific.

  • @timothygodden7243

    @timothygodden7243

    5 жыл бұрын

    You're right that the point is reductionist, and absurdly so I would also agree, but really the only point he wishes to make is that hierarchies are biologically underwritten across species (which includes us). The type, range, specific structures, etc., to those hierarchies is a whole different matter; and conflating the inevitability of hierarchies of SOME kind, however flattened they are, to needing an exploitative capitalist power structure is a point people read into this--which I'm fairly sure is calculated---but not literally what he says.

  • @thk8933

    @thk8933

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@timothygodden7243 I had this precise disagreement with a friend of mine, and I respectfully disagree. I don't think he's merely making a point that hierarchies exist biologically. That is almost self-evident and surely wouldn't require Peterson to concentrate on lobsters as specifically as he does. The interviewer asserts at 2:10 that he is incorrect to link lobsters and their behavior as affected by serotonin levels to human actions and how human actions are affected by serotonin levels. His answer is "of course you can" and I take him at face value. I believe his first chapter of 12 Rules for Life argues along similar lines, but I have yet to rent that book from the library, so I am hesitant to cite something I haven't read for myself. I mention it because I have read several reviews that largely agree that he uses lobsters and serotonin levels to shed light on human hierarchies.

    @@timothygodden7243 I also think Peterson is too concerned to show that human hierarchies are merely (or overwhelmingly) an effect of biology. I don't want to straw man him here, so I could be overemphasizing that point. But surely it is possible that humans with their malleable, plastic brains and adaptable behavior mechanisms can both have the need for hierarchical structures biologically wired into them yet also socially construct more nuanced and sophisticated hierarchical structures? An appropriate analogy would be that humans are biologically wired for pattern seeking behavior; our species has created tessellation based art and mathematical reasoning as constructs, which are relatively nuanced and sophisticated manifestations of basic pattern seeking behavior.

  • @loganjackson675

    @loganjackson675

    Many male animals compete for dominance and acquire mates based on that. Humans have just evolved to become simps 😂. But in all seriousness, both sexes compete in different ways. Peterson himself had a long discussion with an expert on this (his name escapes me), but take apes or specifically chimps as an example. They have natural hierarchies among the males (and females to an extent), so in a sense they’re “competing” for dominance and with it, their choice of females. But the ones who actually compete for males directly are females, they “present” to higher level males and work their way down as they either are rejected or even are successful. This doesn’t really relate to human sexuality because their females evolved to behave promiscuously, as they mate with as many males as possible due to paternity dynamics and infanticide, whereas human women tend to select for the most competent man they can and stick with him in a single partner. Point being though, in chimps, the ladies hoe around and really are the ones competing for sex. The males get the trickle down effect of this behavior and have less problems finding a mate, whereas with humans, men do have to compete more because of women’s tendency towards valuing a more monogamous sexual strategy

    Even if it was a valid comparison in terms of similar biological functioning (say, humans to primate behavior or physiology) this implies we're supposed to look to the natural world where "survival of the fittest" is the rule of law. Social darwinism is not going to advance the human species beyond a basic drive to dominate others and control. Is this the kind of world we want to live in? Maybe in Jordan Peterson's mind, yes. But, that's another story altogether. Even if we found hierarchical behavior in other species that are closely related to humans, that doesn't make it okay to justify human hierarchies that could be based on keeping others in subservient positions (no right to vote, no right to run for office, etc.). Jordan seems to be implying that humans should model their behavior after animals instead of seeking higher ideals. This kinda reminds me of phrenology and other forms of scientific racism aimed at showing that, based on certain biological features, Whites are more evolved than other races. Even if this were remotely true that, because of migration patterns and climate, Europeans and Asians, may have been forced to adapt and evolve to meet the demands of harsher climates and various other challenges due to migration out of our motherland (Africa), it still doesn't justify any form of behavior that seeks to keep others down and take advantage of others (think, the slave trade in the Americas) in order to benefit ourselves... that's immoral, plain and simple. Life is about lifting others up with us when we're advantaged. To elevate humankind beyond these basic biological drives is the new morality that Jesus Christ and other important historical figures sought to offer this world. The "Word of God" is love of our brothers & sisters, not using others' vulnerabilities as stepping stones to get an advantage.

    Comparing lobster behaviour and human behaviour and how it is affected by certain substances is a very reductionist approach. One could argue that it is so reductionist that it offers very little relevance. Additionally, anthropomorphizing non-human animal species - especially invertebrates like lobsters - is highly unscientific. I doubt that there are many zoologists out there who would argue that anthropomorphizing animals is a good way to understand their behaviour or draw parallels to human behaviour. It is absolutely not. But even if social hierarchies were natural and biologically determined (which they likely are). This doesn't imply that social hierarchies are a good thing or shouldn't be overcome. That would be an appeal to nature which is a well-known fallacy in ethics (e.g. "X is good because X is natural. Y is bad because Y is unnatural.")

For racial and sex inequality there was an explanation it was natural. You can find examples for sex equality or sex inequality. Whatever somebody stands for, it's a stupid argument. Just like evolution, capitalism is the most efficient system in total. Seems like good ol' JP can't even content with what he's saying even within a 7 minute time period. So what the study he's citing in his book is saying is, that increased serotonin levels correlate with changes in motivation, agression and behaviour but it affects different types of animals very differently. Lobsters naturally aren't a very social species, they pretty much only socialize when it comes to mating or dominance fights, so increased serotonin levels cause an increase in aggression and motivation to fight. Humans on the other hand are very social creatures, which exhibit a wide range of different social interactions. Increased serotonin levels cause an increase in motivation and discoursive dominance but actually less aggression, as well as a general upswing in mood. So yeah the basic effect of serotonin is quite similar but the actual outcome varies a lot. Still, JP desperately tries to equate these two. That is because he wants to legitimize his claim, that hierarchies are not only good and necessary for humans survival and wellbeing, he goes so far as to say our brains somehow are neurologically "hardwired" to work best in strict hierarchical social orders. this is flawed on so many levels. Firstly, his choice of the lobster is completely arbitrary and he even admits, that he only chose the lobster because it confirms his own beliefs. Also he actually gets called out for it by the woman but chooses to not engage. Then, there's the issue, that he makes the arguement that humans supposed affinity for hierarchy is evident in lobster's affinity for it, despite both being far apart evolutionarily speaking, but hierarchies set up by humans are completely different from the ones, lobsters set up. He even admits to that, so according to him, hierarchies specific to humans and lobsters respectively are too different to assert that human hierarchies may also be based on power and oppression, but apparently they are similar enough to assert that lobsters, humans as well as all living things related are "hardwired" to set up their societies in strict hierarchies? How does that make any sense. He just wants to have it both ways and distorts the facts to suit his own subjective belief system. This gets really apparent in the last section. He wants to preserve hierarchies, he deems good and appropriate and can't stand the idea many left leaning academics propose, namely that many hierarchies may be either completely constructed through social mechanisms or at least artificially inflated to serve the interests of specific people. That's why this lobster stuff he always puts forth is so ltransparently ideologically driven. He doesn't care about thruth or scientific/philosophical inquiry, he just wants to have his worldview to get confirmed.

    Lobsters have a basic nervous system more akin to insects than mammals. Our closest relative the Bonobo has no detectable hierarchy. We have much more advanced brains but unfortunately they have conditioned thought & behaviour reinforced by such people as Peterson. Many species are structured on power but others use various displays to impress. Some just surround a female hoping to get close, many mammals have a bone in their penis to scoop out a previous mates sperm. Even in violent hierarchies like lions the female will sneak off to a younger male. Antidepressants that increase serotonin do not cure depression, initially it may feel worse & the depression often returns when they are stopped. They cause various symptoms which go away after a few weeks & if stopped abruptly the symptoms can be horrific. I knew a nurse with bad depression who reduced pills too quickly & I saw a big change in her behaviour, I reported it but sadly no action was taken & she took her life in the most terrible way possible. People are attracted to others for many reasons eg personality, brains & beauty, all those I know who married a man for the competence to provide are unhappy. According to a poll 50% of Americans between 16 & 23 believe in democratic socialism which is not Marxism, primarily to justified mistrust of the government which has been corrupt: Nixon, Clinton, Trump, & Biden all being examples of dishonesty & fail to increase employment. They look at the success of liberal values of Scandinavian capitalist socialism & compare it to the immense disparity of wealth in their society. It is pure common sense that human hierarchies are constructs or they would all be the same & humans are evidently malleable due to propaganda; we see this both in Russia & America. This makes post modernist skepticism healthy enquiry..
