For a few years Jonny May was one of if not the best international winger. He will be sorely missed the bloke wasn’t just speed he has work rate, good defence and is the weirdest man lots of people have ever met.

That try against Wales with the grubber from Farrell is one of my all time favourite tries. Perfectly executed out of completely nothing.

Not even an England fan but that try against NZ always puts a smile on my face. Smith is helpless. Awesome pace.

His pace was disgusting to behold, genuinely underrated to a shocking extent all throughout his career!

He was a guy with a lot of natural pace and made some great runs at Gloucester. His debut season with England was so-so, lots of lateral running, but showed the promise with that try against NZ. What was great about him was his ethic to improve himself. He became excellent at high ball catching and defence, essential skills at International level. Ben Smith epitomized this - Smith was fine on debut in 2009 but got his career going in 2014 with an incredible work rate, defence, catching, and passing. Jonny May worked on similar skills outside his obvious talents and that really showed from 2018-2021 where he was one of the best wings in the world. Could scorch past wingers still at that point (e.g. South Africa 2018, France 2020), scored some phenomenal solo tries, caught high balls better than Steward for a while, and chased box kicks like a retriever. He lost his pace from 2022 onwards but that work rate kept him in the team. People baying for young guys like Arundell simply because their recent highlights packages look great need to look at how clean Henry's shirt was after the 3rd place play off and realise the young guys need to absolutely work on the basic skills and work rate to make it at international level. Even if gameplans involve a lot of kicking, a winger can add so much to the team rather than just wait for the ball on the sideline. Robinson did that years ago (he became a good kicker and defender as time went on), Ben Smith sets the benchmark, and May also showed that brilliantly.

I distinctly remember thinking that May was rubbish when he first started for England, because it felt like he always ran sideways and got nowhere. He developed into a dangerous winger with serious pace, and a great player.

I don't think you're wrong, six nations 2014 he was very lateral. I really respect that he worked hard on his basic skills alongside his obvious talents and became a brilliant international

3:45 I thought the law is that you have to catch the ball if it's a penalty kick? He clearly jumps from inside and plays the ball before landing in touch but is it play-on?
