Jones Mind Expander 2023 Snowboard Review

The Jones Mind Expander Snowboard - Selected for the Whitelines 100 Snowboard Awards
When the Jones Mind Expander first appeared, it was hard to say whether or not it would have staying power. The quality and fun factor were undeniable, but it cut right across the rest of the Jones brand’s identity - a brightly-plumed parakeet amongst a pack of padding snow leopards.
Fortunately for us all, it found its audience and spawned more variants than a certain infamous airborne virus. While we’d encourage you to check out the twin, split, youth, women’s and ‘Ultra’ versions, this year we’re singling out the original and best.

Great vid. Can you clarify if the twin version is updated from last year?
Hey man great review. I’m just curious if you rode it all the way set back or not?
Would this board be a stretch for a beginner/intermediate level? I have a one season snowboarding experience. I can pull off blue runs with ease and some red ones with the occasional fall here and there. I’m looking for my first board and I love the look of the mind expander.
what binding angles did you use?
Hello, thank you very much for the review, I really liked the Mind Expander, what size would you recommend for freeride with my characteristics? 168cm, 70kg and 40.5 boot? Thank you very much for the help.
I love the board!, i think this board ist exactly the right fit for me, i am riding in powder a lot but i also like to build jumps and i recently learned back flips. Now my question can i also flip with the mind expander because i would like to get better at back flips and some freestyle tricks on kickers but i also want something surfy in the powder. Is the mind expander the right choice for me ?
I am wondering between getting either the Jones Mind Expander vs Bataleon Goliath? Do you favor one over the other and why? Does one board have advantages over the other in areas? Cheers.
Would this thing make a great 2way quiver with a 23 hovercraft? I will pair them with the Orion Bindings and 32's Christenson Bandito boots. Good match? Thanks.
Do the new updates for this board not make it a very similar board to the Flagship?? Wondering if there might be a lot of overlap between the two.
Good move putting camber in it, while is did love how easy and surfy the previous version was, it was too loose for most conditions. Now its a true all mountain and looks so fun

Now it's like many other boards. The original is the most floaty board ever made. Not sure this is an improvement
I’m really struggling between the ME and Storm Wolf- they both seem to suit what I’m after. Solid fast surfy vibe always chasing pow if it’s there, older rider completely done with park laps. I won’t bother if it’s icy or bad conditions, so riding either ideal early day groomers or soft snow days. Calgary based so riding Alberta and Eastern BC. Thanks for the great review.

Thanks for the question! So, let me try to break it down a little... Both boards have the upper hand in different areas that you're looking for. Whichever one you go for, I'd say you're making a good call, but here's the breakdown. Storm Wolf: It's stiffer, so it will hold up better in high-speed carves. The tail will also make it really fun for back foot steering in trees and deep snow. It probably has a slight upper hand in icy terrain too, but it sounds like you're not fussed about that. Mind Expander: Softer flex will make it great for slower speed, surfy style slashing and riding, but the new camber profile means it now carves really effectively. The more conventional tail shape gives it some great versatility if you ever need to ride switch, or just navigate a technical entrance into a line. As for pow performance?! Both are incredible. It just comes down to whether you like riding with a shorter swallowtail or something closer to an all-mountain freeride board. Hope this helps a little? You won't really go wrong with either, to be honest, the Surf Series rules!

@@WhitelinesSnowboarding Would an Ultra ME be a compromise between the two?
Is it an all mountain board? And does it chatter?
What about this vs the ultra mind expander? When would you be better off with the ultra version?
Does the twin also get a 100 rating from you guys? Really like the look of this board but I need a twin 😊
Im 68kg 173cm and snowboarding mainly powder with avi gear. Would you suggest 154cm or 158cm? many thanks
What bindings did you use to test this board and what would you recommend? Thank you

The new Jones Orions - and we 100% recommend them! Real nice board and binding combo. Video review for those is here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaWVqKODoNy5fZc.html
I have the last generation Mind Expander (2019 model) and love it in powder, in fact that is really the only place I use it now. This new deck sounds pretty impressive, but would it be worth switching to the new model if I only used it in pow? Seems a pretty big ask for a camber deck. Thanks
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
Good question. To be honest, if you're only taking your 2019 ME out in powder, you'd probably want to stick with it. The new one still floats really well thanks to the nose rocker and 3D profiling at the ends, but the rocker profile on your model will definitely still have the edge in terms of float.
About to getting a carving board and I’m between mind expander and a Korua dart, what do you think?
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
Ooh... is it too much to ask for both!? They're amazing boards, especially for carving and ripping in pow. The key difference is the shape in the tail. The Mind expander has the edge when it comes to switch and all-mountain versatility, but the Dart is one of the best boards for floating in powder and making tight zippy turns under the backfoot. Too close too call - it all comes down to where and how you like to ride!
And what about the surfy feeling with a camber? Is it lost ? Or do the spoon technology his work and get smoothness in the ride?
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
It's still there - especially in the powder. But what you gain back on the groomers thanks to the new profile makes this such a winner in our books. Very little lost from the old version; but a lot gained in the new one!
Im 80kg US 8, was considering mind expander/ultra mind expander 154 as my forest/powder board with some jumps in the same area would that be good?
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
You might want to consider the 158 instead, as you're at the upper end of the limit on the 154. The bigger size will have more surface area for float in pow, more stability at speed and, if you're carrying an avi pack, will be well better suited to the extra weight load on your back. But as for the choice of board - hell yes! Such a good option for riding in trees and powder. One of our favourites in fact!
How do you guys recommend sizing this one? Is this the type of board you go shorter on or stick to standard snowboard length with the dominant camber? Looking at their recs weight wise I am between 158 and 163. I am an older shredder that rides pow days with the boys or groom with my family. Currently on a 153 Orca which is honestly the shortest board I have ever ridden and havent rideen anything as large as a 163 in over 15 years, before rocker when boards were all camber. I have a fairly small foot as well.

Jones recommends riding this 2-3cm shorter than your typical board. I ride a 162W at 6”3 210lbs

I’m 180 lbs w/10.5 feet and I ride the 158. Wouldn’t go any bigger. I would go maaaaaybe a size smaller if I were riding firm snow all the time, but for riding pow (which is what we usually do) and trees the 158 is perfect.
Hi. I have a very hard choice. I'm hesitating between two boards. The old Ultra Mind Expander 2022 and the new Mind Expander 2024. I can have both at same prices. I'm expert rider, 175cm and 70kg (FOOTSIZE 25.5). I'm looking for a great fun powder day snowboard and pretty fun on slopes to makes carving turns and little tricks. I have this deal with a 158cm board. Can you help me please ? Thanks a lot
Would you choose this over a Mercury? No park at all, rarely ever switch. Looking for one board to cover everything

@@WhitelinesSnowboarding A capita mercury for an all mtn/resort board
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
The Mercury is probably a little more versatile with a slightly more conventional shape, and it's got a lot of pop powerr. But the Mind Expander probably has the edge when it comes to riding powder - so if your switch and park days are behind you. The Mind Expander if at its best carving groomers and ripping pow in your preffered direction!
I'm 173cm and around 74kg without gear, should I go for 154 or 158? Will be by all-round board for everything from groomed to powder/forests.
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
To be honest, you'd be good with either. Size up to the 158 if you're looking for a little more speed, stability and surface area to float in powder; size down to the 154 if you're wanting something that feels a little more maneuverable, playful, and easier to spin or ride in switch. Keep in mind it's a little wider than average, though, so if anything you probably wanna go down a little in size from your regular all-mountain snowboard!

I’m 180 and 90 kg and a just bought 158, and my boot size it’s 10, there should be any probleme about the waist width ? It’s to wider ? Thx
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
@@Goiska1 Width wise you'll be absolutely fine! The next size (162) up might be a little better in terms of the weight range, but it would probably feel too wide for your boot size.
Bataleon Cruiser vs 2023 Mind Expander? Is the cruiser a suitable and cheaper alternative to the mind expander. Looking for a surfy board with some 3D shaping in the nose/tail that rides powder, trees and groomers well. Dont care about park.
158 or 162 for 210lb rider with 10.5 boot size?
Which is better for single board to bring to super soft Japow? stratos or 2023 mind expander ? no trick or park. Just enjoy carving on groomers , trees run and off piste pow hunting. Thanks!
@ToddSnow

Stratos is going to have a slight edge on carving groomers, with the ME having the edge in pow and trees.
What is your weight and what lenght did you ride?
Just one question - how will it behave on ice?

Decent apparently. Jeremy J did a mini review on KZread and mentioned this point saying it has mild serration/ magna traction for ice

A board mainly for the pow and the slopes...What's your ranking of the following 2023 boards: Mind Expander, Flagship, Stratos?
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
Yikes, big call! There's no wrong answer, but maybe best to view it on a sliding scale: On the steeper, faster, more technical and challenging end of the spectrum, go for the Flagship; the more mellow, surfy, floaty and creative you want to get with your riding, go with the mind expander; and for a sweet spot in the middle, go with the Stratos. Hope that helps?

How is the Mind Expander vs the Hometown Hero? You seem to really like both of those boards
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, both great boards. The Hometown Hero is possibly a little more aggressive and a bit of a precision tool for riding in the best and worst of conditions. The Mind Expander can certainly handle similar terrain, but it's a little more of a flowy, surfy experience to ride.
Mind Expander or Lib Tech Orca? What a problem😅
This or an orca for a Japan trip? Cannot decide between those
@WhitelinesSnowboarding
Жыл бұрын
Scholars will debate this one for years to come. It's very close to call, and both boards are going to be great out in Japan. For us, the Mind Expander came up top this year because of how how surfy and flowy it felt in powder. If that's your kind of riding style, you might wanna lean towards Jones. Both are great boards though, nothing but love for the Orca and Mind Expander.
The board looked sketchy and unstable on piste. Looks like a good pow board but looks unstable for carving
@ToddSnow
Жыл бұрын
I haven’t ridden it yet but from the reviews I’ve watched, it’s a very good carver even at speeds. Obviously it’s not gonna be a straight up bomber but it is on the stiffer side of medium and a camber board..
@joshstokmans5534
Жыл бұрын
I’ve got the mind expander from 2 years ago and it’s a great all mountain board. Has way better edge hold than my old ultra mountain twin and doesn’t get that sketchy. This one should be even better with the camber added in. I don’t ride on ice so I can’t tell you how it is on that, but on firm snow and anything better than that it is stable and rails carves
