Jonathan Davis' style is like am abstract painting that comes to life and attacks you the minute you think you've seen a face or shape you can make sense of. But it is sure FUN to dig into!
Moving between pent up and all out aggression, moaning, whispering, half rap/scat, tortured beat-boxing, rhythmic shrieks and inhales ... It's ALL THERE... It's all amazing!
Join me for this in-depth study, using isolated studio recordings from "Freak On A Leash". I not only explain but actually demonstrate and break down how to learn key passages of this song and JD's style. You'll also get a few production insights along the way!

Jonathan's voice has also aged so well. A lot of people onlly talk about his old songs, which is amazing, but barely anyone talks about his vocals in Korn's newer stuff, like on The Nothing. Such emotional, wide range vocals by him on that album... BTW, Thank you for doing this one, Chris! Been requesting it for a while!

Despite his age he really holds up well live with the old stuff too. It sounds really good and even stronger than ever before in a way that he isn’t losing his breathe all the time. Such a charismatic frontman.

His transition is mostly noticable on Untouchables, although he had to do allot of takes on that album (not a bad thing, and thanks to the producer? pushing him)
This was the first result for "How to speak Korn". Very helpful, thank you

Your voice is gold dude. Holy shit. You can literally do whatever you want and you choose to teach. You are 100% someone people should look up to for many reasons. You have my respect:)
JD doesn't get enough credit for his voice! U get the feeling yhat he can sing anything
Man his stage whisper sounds like imperfect cell, it’s really cool
that impression 11:01 tho SUPER accurate, it can really trick someone into think that it was actually jhonathan
His vocals on Queen of the Damned were amazing.

Jeez, i was going to say that "ooh, another 99th video about the "Freak on a Leash", good but not great" but i believe that this one is the most detailed breakdown and i found a lots of stuff that makes vocal in this song so great (and i'm really impressed that JD did that almost at the start of his vocal career). Really really great work, Chris! And the scat-part was really interesting. Nevertheless i'd like to know something about newer albums ("The Nothing" especially) cause i have a feeling that whole KZread is stuck in these 2000-2005 so there's nothing new for 10-15 years. Annd. So many people think that he's moaning all the time like a sheep 'cause he's doing it in this very famous song. But he isn't doing it all the time and there's a bunch of another cool techniques he uses. Songs like "Let The Guilt Go" or "Holding All These Lies" are great as well and quite various in vocal aspects but kinda underestimated Thanks again anyway for this video, been waiting so long for JD'd style

True. His new work is often overlooked because they aren’t as big pop hits as the old ones but actually in many ways the new stuff is fresh and fun after hearing the old stuff thousands of times. The Nothing is up there with their finest work in a modern way.
Using the voice as fx - compression, EQ; using breath percussively, so many other concepts I had no idea of ... 23.30 and beyond so cool. Wow Chris you're an Olympic gymnast. Gold medal for you.
YEEESSSSSS JD is my favorite frontman, this one's gonna be great! 🖤🤘

I cant believe you spent so much time on his scatting i love the breakdown thank you that was awesome
I appreciate that you get that looking a little silly every once in a while so you can actually get your point (and the information) across in a way where people have examples to use as a reference for the different stages of actually GETTING to the sound they're trying to achieve. Most people worry about looking cool and tough while giving people like.. 5 bullet points of "no shit" generalities with no examples. Seriously, GREAT stuff you're doing here.

Hey Chris, I am deeply impressed by your reproducing the percussive middle part with your own voice - I have never heard anoyne get so close to the original before. Actually, you're sounding just like it while you experiment with that part. Thank you for demonstrating how to pick this technique apart and recreate it piece by piece. Amazing work!
That's pretty impressive the diving in on how JD sings! Never would have thought about that! So cool Man!

Dude, your videos are amazing! It's incredible how techniques are present in musics that are so natural to the original singer. I use to believe that the style and voice was just the "gift" of each singer, their natural and unique sound. Watching your videos opened my eyes to the huge variety of skills and resources a singer must train and develop. Thanks for sharing!

I love how when JD is scatting, it feels like he's irritating his throat while it's all the contrary
Great stuff :) The fact that JD's voice (and doubles) is not "tuned" adds to these dissonances that exactly serve it's purpose .
Thanks for doing these videos and the free course Chris, you helped me a lot!
This has gotta be the most fun ive had watching one of these since the last one and the original grit videos. The beatboxing was completely new to me

Best isolated vocals analysis ever!
Love JD, legend!!
I love his dynamics, and masterful use of compression. Thanks for for this deep-dive on this brilliant voice style‼️ I’m ramping up to lay vocals on about a dozen tracks, so this is a nugget of gold. Thanks beoheim 🤘🏻
That wobbly sort of falling off sound that he uses reminds me of grunge a lot. At times he also reminds me of Manson the way he uses the fry to start or end some lines. Although I suppose those kind of tie together. Awesome as always!

Excellent as ever, especially the improv section!! So easy to see how the rhythm is king and the way in which breathing can become rhythmic. ❤️ it!!

@@chrisliepe can you offer any more tips on getting the "boom" tone? I just can't seem to get the low gutteral, kind of bassy sound without hurting myself. It's the one thing that trips me up on this song.
hey man I really like your videos, your free course really helped me re-find my voice, now, as someone who has been a ‘rock’ singer for a decade and now speaks softly for a living as an asmr creator haha, i find it harder and harder to rock the s**t out of my chest voice and really grip a consistent tone, pitch and placement. my head/ falsetto is fine, I just want to enhance my chest for more folk/ Americana style music, that blues, country, folk, rock fusion that lives so heavily in a ‘talk’ singing chest voice. I love the way you teach, if any of your courses or videos are heavily chest/ foundation based (I have no issue in paying for a course haha) please point me towards it. Cheers dude, take it easy, peace

It's kinda funny how, as the years have progressed, Johnathan Davis keeps sounding more like "Johnathan Davis" than before. His vocal style has kinda shaped his voice very specifically and it's so insanely unique that you'll literally never confuse him for someone else, nor will anyone else really get his sound. I love the whole "cookie monster" bits (perfectly exemplified in this song specifically) because he's using his voice like a drum set or almost like a scatting beatboxing track.
Just excellent. Wow, so impressed. Way waaay better than what Tamplin is doing. Kudos!!

Well... That was definitely worth the wait! I thought I knew everything he does in this song , but a few elements caught me by surprise in this video. Like how Jonathan actually uses grit in the first verse of the song. Mind blown there LOL If possible in the future could you do a vocal breakdown on Are You Ready to Live? YEEESSSSSS THANK YOU CHRISSSSSS

I love you Chris!!!! I was waiting for this since I made the suggestion, definitely there's a lot of interesting stuff here, such a charismatic singer IMO! I think what's most interesting about him is that he knows perfectly how to sound like he's on the edge of freaking out, and I believe this mindset takes you to 80% of the way to sound "like" him, I mean, take this richness into your own singing :) Now I'll wait longer for some content on Roy Khan. Unfortunately, he's way less popular, however, he's denifitely VERY interesting! "One Cold Winter's Night" DVD as reference :D

Your work is Amazing. One of my favorite channel. I would love to see you do the same with Kingdom from Devin Townsend.
Dude your analysis is pure GOLD! However, physiology notwithstanding, during the verses I humbly, personally think -just by singing in HIS range- he is compressing air towards his teeth, not unlike a person on the verge of a nervous breakdown. You are over-analysing it. From "sometimes" onwards you are spot on. But before that, there are just some things that if the anatomy is not there you cannot replicate.
I’ve really been enjoying these newer videos you’ve been doing in this style! Been really looking forward to a Johnathan Davis video for awhile now too!I’d love to hear Big Time, Red Rain or Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. I love his use of compression to get his grit, and breathiness, his head voice or falsetto and how he throws his voice, or belts in a way that’s like yodelling

JD has so much emotion behind his lyrics, especialy the first albums. It's hard 'mold' that into an analysis. But damn, props to doing the scat, I think this is the closest one yet (but some parts need emotion instead of technique ;))
