    If you analyze Marilyn Manson’s performances back in the late 90’s, you can tell he was applying grit and distortion in the wrong places of his throat. That’s why you’ll hear is voice crack and not project due to no warmups and wrong technique. He started using proper fry screaming technique on GAOG.

  • @markpriss

    @markpriss

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, kinda... I think he sounded great on Tourniquet for example but also he sounded quite different on it as well a few other older songs like "lunchbox"... which means he was mostly experimenting and discovering his voice I think similar can be said about "The beautiful people". But yuh he did not do it correctly because he sounded wildly inconsistent during his live shows... kinda all over the place. TGAOG was a good album and sounded more consistent but this was also when he lost his voice... some time after that record... which is why we started getting light albums like "Eat me, drink me", and that "High end of Low"... really mellow stuff because he blew his voice out with songs like "this is the new *hit", so I doubt he mastered the technique perfectly. Albums post TGAOG are kind of painful to listen to in all honesty, because even on the record his voice sounds destroyed. Recently I think he managed to recover somewhat but I think it's a little too late for him to be as good as he could have been with that naturally interesting voice of his. Obviously his drug and alcohol problems add to his voice damage significantly...

  • @markpriss

    @markpriss

    3 жыл бұрын

    @rvidal0001 on This is the new **** his distortion is basically fry scream. And on lows in the verses it’s also basic fry. Try to learn how to do those verses with fry first before attempting to do those intense choruses. But you have to know how to belt properly as well as he kind of has a pitch underneath that scream means he engages his true vocal folds and adds distortion on top from soft pallet area. For this type of singing/screaming you should not engage your true vocal folds or any tension in your neck really. The steps I’d recommend for you to take is: 1. Learn about basic fry in your chest register 2. Learn how to belt and sing that chorus clean 3. Try Applying distortion when you can sing that chorus with your clean voice without tension or discomfort. I don’t really know what your level is so I am just breaking down everything. Also keep in mind that Manson did extensive touring and has been using drugs and alcohol to our knowledge... all of that really affects a singer’s voice. I doubt it was hurting him during recording... I believe at this time he was getting more consistent but his set list has gotten pretty intense plus bad habits I mentioned messed him up pretty bad. For most stuff I mentioned Chris has videos where covers those techniques, you should check them out.

    @rvidal0001 no problem, it’s my pleasure. The fear is understandable but these days there is quite a bit of information on these techniques. Back when I started there was nothing. Glad to hear you’ve been doing this for a while as otherwise this kind of technique would have been a much bigger of an undertaking. Best of luck with distortion and your band!

    Awesome video Chris! This is a super great example of what I commented on the "distortions" video. Manson is a MASTER of Glotic (glottal?) distortions. Remember I told you glotic distortions could have crackling or sibilant tendency? Fry is a 100% crackling and whisper/squeak is a 100% sibilant. So you have infinite permutations inbetween, wich is what Manson has been doing since, well, forever haha. Glotic distortions are achieved by breaking the F0 note. So, by logic, both Fry and Squeak don't have note (since they are both ends of the spectrum). BUT! you definitely can control it in order to have a note inbtween. Fry with note is known as "creaky voice". Squeaky with note + some crackling, "Howling" (most famous singer who uses this, Janis Joplin). Keep putting out awesome material, have a nice day! PS: Pardon any grammar mistake, Enlgish is not my native language. PS2: As research in the topic are still being made, there is a possibility that I'll edit something. In that case, I'll indicate where. Cheers! :)

    Yesss, been wanting a video like this. His fry and whisper rasp come naturally to me since my speaking voice is somewhat similar to his, but I've been stuck trying to mimic the rest. He has a note of nasality to his voice that I struggle to find.

    They’re basically doing the same style. Chris borrows heavily from Manson. Just like Spencer Sotelo borrows heavily from Sonny Moore (Skrillex).

    @@RichLunaReacts Wait What? Chris borrows HEAVILY from everyone... not an ounce of originality in that guy which is why I really don't like him and can't acknowledge as a professional musician he should just stick to covers at this point. Sotelo HEAVILY borrows from Sonny? Are you for real? I know Spencer sang for FFTL for a bit but man they are VERY VERY different singers! Sonny is the equivalent of Emo singer, he had very poor technique which is why he blew his voice out and he could never really scream properly... he kinda did it all on an emotion first technique second which is the most dangerous combination for a singer... which is why he blew his voice out and left the band back in the day... I heard he rejoined recently though... but I have not been keeping up to date on them. Spencer however is much more technical even though he can pull off Emo style vocals but that's purely because he's a tenor, not to mention his low growls and very good control with Fry Scream! Sotelo is a far superior singer and I fail to see any resemblance whatsoever... even if he said he was inspired by Sonny back in the day it doesn't make him sound like that... thank god. Sotelo was struggling at the early stages with Periphery but he has grown so much over the years it's inspiring in a way.

    The thing with these kind of vocals is that it is way difficult live/in rehearsals to cut through the band, wheras in the studio you can do all sorts of things there to help it get up front. At least, that's what happens with me, maybe I just sawk at it! Anyway! Cool shirt, by the way!

    Check out Dani Filth, his screams are ear-piercing. With Manson, I always thought the way he incorporates his vocals into his personas that his sound falls more in the category of performance art into and of itself. Technically, you could say any vocalists is a performance artist, but Manson, takes artistic license with it unlike any other I have seen except maybe Alice Cooper or David Bowie. That creative vocals, without software, is something most artists today lack the ability to do. They focus way to much on the technical aspects that they forget to incorporate a little bit of creativity. The hall mark of actually being an "artist".

I'm trying all of them as you do them :) I'd be interested if you'd try Peter Tägtgren.... His work in Bloodbath. He has an amazing growl and is one of my favorite harsh singers. Very expressive and kind of saturated in his tone. Mikael Åkerfeldt is great too. Also Mike has a lovely singing voice you'd probably dig as well.

    @@chrisliepe if you're serious, the album Peter is on is Nightmares Made Flesh. And for Mike, anything recent in his band Opeth for singing, and The Fathomless Mastery for growls - - my personal fav song there is Hades Rising. 😊🎶I can't tell you if they are growling correctly, and if not I guess my comments are moot.

    I loved this video, Chris. Thanks for covering Manson. He was actually my biggest inspiration to become a singer. I’ve listened to him since I was 11 years old and immediately was captivated by his voice the first moment I heard his music. No other vocalist has ever came close to delivering the dark, end of times, demonic humanoid sound he has. It’s ironic, because my voice and singing style evolved into a totally different genre (bluesy, folk rock), but he and Bjork are still my vocal idols. ♥️ Anything Manson I see, I click. Haha

    I can do all the things you demonstrated in this video apart from the high scream. I just cant get my full voice up that high and I lose a lot of air in that mid to high range scream. My way around it is to do a thick head voice scream, but it just doesn't sound the same. Any suggestions? and thank you for this! I've been waiting for this since your first "how to sing like" video! So AWESOME!
