Jon Meacham: Are the people committed to voting for Trump affected by any of this?
A key witness in Donald Trump's criminal trial testified Thursday about his role in hush money payments to a porn actress and a Playboy model the former president allegedly had affairs with - and Trump's plan to make sure other negative stories about him never saw the light of day. The Morning Joe panel discusses the criminal trial, and historian Jon Meacham wonders if those committed to voting for Trump for a third time are impacted by the case.

I've been voting in presidential elections for the last 55 yr. Hearing Meacham's comments about Trump being an entertainer and voters "liking it " is appalling. It's the Jerry Springer, WWE, Kardashians, Real Housewives fan base mentality. This mentality has been fostered and encouraged for decades by the entertainment industry that never cared about the outcome, just the ratings. If you actually survey some of the most popular "reality shows" on TV, it's terrifying how rampant and popular stupidity and superficiality are. The entertainment industry has fed Americans a steady diet of vapid show after vapid show designed to either entertain brainlessly, distort priorities, or make them feel superior by watching orchestrated train wrecks. Combine that with chronic divestment from education, and ta da! The poorly educated public has always been the cash cow for politicians, the rich and the church. That will never change and Trump wasn't the first or last to do it. Trump just empowered and weaponized stupidity.

As I see it, the US have drifted into a country at the mercy of commerce and it's advertized happiness through supersized portions and undersized education for far too long. At the same time, you, the people have for too long accepted that your government and other institutions can lie to you about what the real agenda is behind many decisions. If the CEOs of large and powerful companies take turns to become a national advisers, something has gone wrong.

They make up lies to blame Biden and make Trump look completely innocent, complete with fabricated quotes, etc. David Axelrod, Obama's chief campaign manager said it would not sway any voters, regardless of conviction status or what they said to pollsters. It made for good theater, but wouldn't change anything on the ground. If Biden can stop losing voters, get a better message, It would be a very close election, but that Biden was not connecting with the voters he needed to, the Gaza massacre/genocidal Israeli war was bleeding young voters who Trump was now winning, and Trump was the stronger candidate politically, but he was "crazy", his own worst enemy, and made mistakes. Without MI, Biden would have to win other states such as NV and other purple states, and that would be "a heavy lift". Axelrod said voters were dulled to all the legal misdeeds, the racism, the hatred, and bombshells, so Biden should concentrate on economic issues while Trump is screaming like a banshee each day in court.

I would have paid good money-maybe even refinanced a home (full disclosure: I rent)-to have one judge ask this question: “If the president orders the suspension, perhaps billed as temporary, of the U.S. Supreme Court, is that an official act?” Under Trump’s lawyer’s argument, he would have to admit yes, it would be an official act. He could even order the military-he’s the Commander in Chief-to enforce that suspension. "Official act?” In other words, could the president unilaterally decide to erase the provision of three separate but equal branches of government and make the Executive the supreme branch of all government? Somebody please get that question to the Supreme Court Justices!

Any president can suspend our constitution and declare Martial law. In that time frame legal scholars have said Trump can do lots of damage to the countries legal system.
Remember, while Trump was put in office by the Electoral College, he never convinced the majority of us that we could trust him. In 2016, most of us voted for Clinton and, in 2020, most of us voted for Biden.

His base is not the majority, the reason he won the first time was because of 2 things. 1. White voter rage because a black man was a 2 term president 2. The DNC nomination of Hillary over Bernie. I believe Bernie would’ve won because he would’ve got the young votes which is what the DNC doesn’t really try to appeal to. Bernie would’ve squashed him. However, I do have a bad feeling that Hillary might’ve gotten cheated out of that 2016 election now that we see what they tried to do in AZ and MI and other states.
If I had known about all of these scandals, I wouldn't have voted for tRump in 2016. But then, I'm not a magabilly and would never vote for the traitor anyway.

Exactly. The males in my family, going back before the Civil war, have served our country in the military. My older son has served. My younger son is serving. The Trump family for at least five generations has been too selfish and cowardly to serve our nation. Trump cheated his way into office in 2016 and the nation needs to recognize that. We can't EVER let him get away with that again.

bluntly speaking, you have no say where your tax dollars go, but in fairness, it makes one feel better to say it. reality is you pay the irs, and hmmm, secret service is administered by the.... 😂irony always makes me chuckle 😂

If approximately 40% of the American voters are Independents, applying the rule of law, here, is likely going to have an influence on the voting decisions of those people, not anyone on the left or right, Republican or Democrat. This is both parties' major interest in the outcome.

The number of Independents have steadily increased over the past 30 years, particularly amongst the younger generations who are disaffected, but still willing to vote and/or register. Some measure of Independents are simply not actually registering as Independents but act as such would vote, not really consistently along Re[/Dem party lines. Again, why do you think courting the independent voters has become such a priority of the Rep/Dem parties. It's not only because that as the two sides become more galvanized, but also because the "middle" unaligned voters are increasing.
Some americans would vote for their own demise if it screws over someone they think is beneath them.

Trump’s base is abhorrent, I don’t care how much they try to claim they’re ignorant or just care about tax cuts or don’t pay attention to what he says or does. They all are aware, they all know what he’s doing, and they all support it. All of them. Every single miserable one.

Does any of this even matter if the Supreme Court rules that the president has complete immunity, which, after listening to yesterdays hearing, it sounds like they’re leaning toward?
Nope, asked a guy I play games with online if he’d still vote for Trump even if he was in a cell and he said yes. The level of brain rot and hypocrisy with these people is insane.
Remember when the "party of total immunity from the law" used to call themselves the "party of law and order?"
In a sane, rational and ethical country, the answer should be "yes". But Trump really seems to bring out the worst devil in Americans....
