    Crustaceans, beetles, ants - all arthropods and all cold blooded creatures. So no entropic loss from heat generation. Also, the Night Folk description mentions they are a cold blooded race as well, which lends to their connection to the ants and other arthropods throughout the Lands Between

    I work in plant cultivation, my thoughts on the Erdtree producing seeds is that it might be what we call a “herm” or hermaphrodite. Essentially, if a female plant undergoes too much stress, or receives improper nutrients/light, it can sometimes think it’s dying and start to grow male reproductive parts and pollinate itself. I think Marika’s altering of the Elden Ring could be what caused it to begin this process. Or it could be that the tree was simply mimicking it’s host traits what with the whole Marika/Radagon affair.

    Some plants simply produce reproductive cells of both sexes in various ways, without any undue stress. Parthenogenesis (or "virgin birth") also occurs in some complex animals including sharks, amphibians and lizards. Considering the theory that the Erdtree was already burned once before it could also be inspired by conifers which are both monoecious (produce both male and female individual flowers on the same plant) and in some cases dependent on forest fires to release their seeds.

    Going off off this comment, could the appearance/creation of Radagon be a result of stress on Marika's part? Godfroy wasn't suitable anymore, she needed someone with a more subtle approach to subdue the Carian powerhouse and deal long term damage. Then, when this issue was resolved, she could "pollinate" herself to guarranty Empyreans as offsprings

    I have long suspected that Miyazaki chooses character names based on Western meanings and not Japanese. If Marika is a form of Maria (Mary) and Melenia is a variant of Melania, which means “dark” in Latin, then it may be of interest that Saint Melania the Elder founded some of the earliest Christian religious communities and was known as a follower of Origen. She was a wealthy and powerful woman who gave away her fortune to the poor. Origen later got a somewhat bad and possibly undeserved reputation as believing in a Christianized form of reincarnation, as well as in Universalism, the idea that everyone, even the most rotten sinner, could be “saved”. Saint Melania was one of a number of saints at the time who criticized Christian leaders for living extravagant lifestyles. She and others like Saint John Chrysostom lived simply and promoted asceticism and the value of honest poor people over the wealthy. They were persecuted by the wealthy Roman and Church authorities. The concept of the eventual power and dominance of the simple, base, and unwanted, as well as the idea that even something considered negative like “rot” could have a good purpose, would probably be something Saint Melania might agree with. Oh…another thing Origen was (probably falsely) accused of was castrating himself, which in the colloquial thinking would have been changing from male to female…so the idea of a progenitor to Melania/Melenia who is both male and female is somewhat fitting. Origen (and followers like Melania) was also a pacifist, whereas rad - agon means “happy to make war”. So we have Marika (the Mother of God), Rad-agon the war lover and the powerful Golden Order, and the formerly rich and powerful but now persecuted representative of the meek and humble, Malenia/Melania. (Miquella is a spelling of Michael, the Archangel who leads the armies of God. Where Malenia is fighting an ultimately losing battle against worldly forces, Miquella’s battle is spiritual, and even apparently defeated can still “win” in the end.) The idea of “rot” as tearing down the corrupt old existing hierarchy to make room for a rebirth and new beginning would go along with Origen’s (supposed) theology and the role of Malenia and Miquella in opposing the corrupt and gold-obsessed power structure and supporting the “rotten” would make sense.

    I think Monotone says it perfectly: “In ideal nature, nature that *isn’t Caelid*, rot is a good thing.” I think rot as a normal natural force is needed, but when lifted up as the new order it poses just as many problems as Marika’s order. An age of any one force above all is what poses a threat, and without Miquela to use his mind control powers to keep things in line it will run wild. Fun video! It’s cool to get see someone in the field talk about it. My SO is a biologist but doesn’t like Fromsoft games so I can’t really get into it as much with her, so it’s neat to hear that perspective!

    @@quelaag Petrifaction is the replacement of organic material with minerals. As monotone describes it generally happens when the organism is covered by water with high mineral content or volcanic ash. It is one possible outcome when wood cannot degrade, but it is not the most typical. What would generally happen in the roughly 60 million years where trees existed but could not be easily broken down is that their remains would accumulate in swamps and gradually turn into peat. Over hundreds of millions of years this peat got burried deeper and deeper and compressed harder and harder untill it turned into coal. The vast majority of the coal we use today comes from this age (360-300 million years ago) which is why it is called the carboniferous (coal-bearing) period. Mycologist have found that the end of the carboniferous period coincides with the period where the "white rot fungi" first developed the ability to degrade the lignin. Lignin is polymer that forms the supportive structure in trees and plants and gives them mechanical stability and generally keeps their insides in and the outside out. So you essentially have this white rot comming in and ending a 60 million year age defined by the omnipresence of trees. An interesting note on lignin is that strengthens the cell walls in wood by locking cellulose strands into alternating layers of angled parallel lines that together form a criss-cross or crosshatch pattern. So on a molecular level what strengthens and protects trees is this ordered crosshatch structure and i wouldn't be surprised if this was one of the main inspirations for the shape of the Radagons rune.

    I love these discussions! Listening to lore videos brings me so much joy, especially with all of the connections to science and anthropology. I wanted to throw out this interesting little guy as food for thought - the lichen (pronounced lycan). It's when algae and fungi coexist as independent organisms, but work as one in a mutualistic relationship. Lichen grows on essentially anything, including rocks and trees. Some lichen resemble strange, barnacle-like growths with algae blooms. The Haematomma lichen variants are actually pretty similar to the landscape in Caelid and the Lake of Rot. Algae/aquatic theme + fungi/rot seemed to fit nicely and I thought it'd be fun to point out!

    The fungi you're talking about that facilitate nutrient and water uptake in roots are called endo- and ectomichorrizal fungi. Evolutionary botanists theorize that these fungi evolved alongside plants and trees and that most terrestrial vascular plants owe their long term success and survival to these fungal systems within and without their root systems.

    Great discussion! I feel like you two really brought a lot to the table in this discussion concerning the more biology related themes in Elden Ring, and I thought it went a long way towards tying together a lot of the symbolism of the mythological and alchemical elements you've previously discussed. Entropy will always increase over time, so when someone like Marika goes against the systems of nature as they were established, she is trying to slow down or cut off the cycles that progress everything in the universe and thus halt entropy. It seems like her conception of immortality is stasis. Based on some of the info from Tarnished Archaeologist's videos on the burning of the Erdtree, as well as your discussion here I suspect this was a willful rejection on her part of the purpose and lifecycle of the Greater Will, as it reproduces through a burning process (much like Lodgepole Pines). She did not like this. All the other Gods of the Lands Between seem to operate in ways that act out ecosystems on a macro scale (an ecosystem of souls and primordial energy?), or recycle in various ways; the Flame of the Fell god periodically burns forests to allow them to reproduce, Deathbirds live in these "Forests," the Greater Will is like a sort of invasive Tree Species which has taken a greater role in the Land Between's "Forest" where once there were Great Trees and the Crucuble of Life, Dragons of the land and sky, and the Goddess of Rot is like those fungus that live in forests. As you've mentioned before, Malenia's Lotus form seems to be an integration of the aquatic ecosystem of the Rivers and the Rot together. The Ancestral Followers are parallel to the Deathbirds as animals that exist in this "forest." The Moons and Stars are forces even further away which seem to dictate the movements of life and souls across the Lands Between, in much the same way that our real life Moon dictates the greater flow of life on Earth. Our moon and stars pull on the planet, creating tides, and influencing the cycles that many ecosystems work around. Thus, all the Outer gods were connected, and Marika's hubris is that she halted the lifecycles and really ruined a lot of the natural ecosystems that once existed, leaving them as scattered remnants of what they once were. Here I think Miyazaki's ongoing theme of Humanity is present in such a poignant way. All the Outer Gods invested sentient creatures and humans with their abilities, but in the end it is their power of choice that holds immense sway over the fate of all the other living beings in their environment. They can choose to embrace natural cycles (Miquella, Malenia, Melena) , reject them (Marika), create entirely new ecosystems (Dung Eater, Fia), or even attempt to transcend them (Ranni). The Flame of Chaos is hated and feared because it wants to accelerate entropy to the point where everything is scattered ash. Of course, theoretically something could start from that, but it seems like it would be either exceedingly difficult, or take a very long time. I see the Three Fingers as Elden Ring's version of the Heat Death of the Universe. On the note of what the Pests look like, I found them to have an uncanny resemblance to Scutigera coleoptrata (also known as House Centipedes).

  • @antijoscha1690

    @antijoscha1690

    yes i agree with you that the outer gods represent the ecosystem. Or at least their individual aspects. And that Marika's influence made sure that this balance was disturbed. When I read your links to all the Outer Gods, one question comes to mind. So far, I have only thought of the Outer Gods as selfish principles. But what if some reason led them to create inequality through extremes that brought about the Shattering to end the Golden Order of Marika by placing Demigods under their respective influence. Malenia and the Rot, Miquella and the Abundance, Mohg and Morgott and the Formless Mother, Ranni and the Cosmos. While others like Radahn tried to smooth out this disorder (and Morgott tending to the order as well)

    @@antijoscha1690 I really like this reading of how the other Gods might have been exerting their presence. It is pretty difficult to discern specific intent and plans from them since their actions are so widely distributed and large scale most of the time, but it certainly seems plausible they would have taken more direct action then, given how much of a threat Marika and the fundamentalists were to the previous state of homeostasis. That interplay between the desires of the Outer Gods and the desires all of the people in the Lands Between is just endlessly interesting, even moreso given how much care Miyazaki and Fromsoft put into the stories of not just the gods but the little bits of character acting and dialogue/monologue we get from all sorts of npcs and ghosts across the Lands.

    Entropy cannot decrease. As the temperature decreases your entropy change becomes lower, but you're still increasing. Once you reach absolute zero (0 kelvin), then your entropy change becomes zero, but entropy itself is never decreased nor is it zero. Entropy is practically chaos. No matter what u do....ur always adding on to the chaos that is in this world.

  • @Photoloss

    @Photoloss

    Жыл бұрын

    Well not quite. It is possible to construct systems within which entropy outright decreases as it acts more like a "second axis" coupled but not identical to energy. At its core entropy is a really simple thing, a measure of how many microscopic states appear as the same macroscopic state. In statistical mechanics the "inevitable growth" actually is more of an _assumption_ than a fundamental law: that the development of a system's state does not depend on the entirety of the system's history but only on its present state. Technically both classical and quantum mechanics disagree with this assumption but not in ways which are relevant to most real life situations. But under this assumption it is fairly obvious that a system hopping through different (micro)states will spend more time in macrostates which contain more options for different microstates. And the more options (=entropy, more or less) you have the more likely the macrostate becomes. For example imagine you have a ball in a square room. There is only 1 option to place it in "the front-left" corner, but there are 4 options to place it in "a" corner. Now add a second ball. There still is only 1 option to place both balls in "the front-left" corner, and 4 options to place both in "the same" corner. But there are a total of *16* options to place both balls in corners (if you can tell them apart) so if you toss both into random corners it is incredibly unlikely to find them both in "the front-left" corner afterwards. Now add about 10^23 additional balls and you'll understand why no gas will ever randomly compress itself into a corner of its container. Back to toy balls energy in this analogy is akin to tilting the room so gravity can take hold. You won't find many balls resting in the "upper" corners but between the "lower" ones entropy prevails, toss a dozen more balls in there and you'll likely find them spread out along the bottom edge, maybe bumping into each other but almost never all neatly sitting in the same corner. If the balls can bounce (without friction) you can still find a few at various heights above the bottom edge so it's not like energy completely overrides entropy, but both work in tandem pulling the system into different directions. Now how do we "beat" entropy? Simple: by making both high- and low-energy states _less likely_ than those in between. As we pump more chaotic energy ("heat") into the system it will eventually "re-freeze" into the more limited high-energy states and thus decrease its entropy. You can sort of picture it with stick magnets: if you arrange them next to each other in a line with both poles perpendicular to that line then the polarity of neighbouring magnets defines most of the system's energy. Align North with South and South with North and the system will be nice and stable (and stick to itself like it's superglued together...) but align N-N and S-S and the system will be full of volatile energy to the point it will probably fly apart instantly if you try that at home with neodymium magnets. *BUT!* both of these alignments have the same entropy!!! Low energy is either N-S-N-S... at the top or S-N-S-N... at the top as flipping the entire thing upside down does not change its energy without the presence of an external magnetic field. The same goes for high energy, either N-N-N-N... or S-S-S-S... at the top. But with just 4 magnets you already have 4 options to flip one of them _out_ of alignment i.e. way higher entropy. Indeed entropy increases from both directions towards the halfway point between minimum and maximum energy. Only in both everyday life but also in modern physics most systems are more like balls bouncing in a box and not like a stack of magnets, perhaps most profoundly our models for the universe as a whole largely paint it as a stretchy balloon with balls bouncing around inside which is why the second law of thermodynamics cannot be beaten outside of carefully constructed lab systems. Finally "chaos" in science is not quite the same as "entropy". Entropy is a property of a system's state, chaos is a measure of how it transitions from one state to another. There is some overlap as high entropy ("many options") can make it harder to predict how a system will develop, but macroscopically nearing _maximum_ entropy will ultimately lead to the system being mostly homogeneous in a sense ("therefore ordered" - 8bit Theater). Life and all the other interesting stuff takes place at high "complexity" which is a combination of both energy and entropy and where mathematical chaos also tends to thrive - too little energy or entropy and the system will freeze out, too much of either and it'll disintegrate into primordial soup.

    @@Photoloss I have no idea why I actually read the whole thing, but basically you beat around the bush a lot, and then came back to the conclusion that the second law cannot be violated realistically. I really hate this type of explanation (personally), but then again I'm not a theoretical physicist, so we'll probably never meet eye-to-eye on these points you're making. I will point out however that if you're arguing the validity of the second law (i.e. you're saying that entropy can overall decrease in a normal flow of time), you're also arguing the validity of the big bang theory. We always tend to overcomplicate things, but I invite you to read about Ibn Sena's interpretations of Aristotle's thoughts on essence and existence. He (Ibn Sena) was basically the first one (to my knowledge) to propose entropy and the big bang theory. I will also add that youtube is hardly the place for these arguments, so I will leave in peace ✌️ and leave you to your thoughts.

  • @Photoloss

    @Photoloss

    Жыл бұрын

    @@weiss9748 My main point is that while the second law of thermodynamics does remain valid it is a matter of implementation rather than principle. I would also like people (not just you, it's nigh ubiquitous in popular culture) to be more specific in their use of terms such as "entropy" and "chaos" so I tried to explain what entropy does and does not mean. If we nuked the entire planet, burned everything down and eradicated all life that would constitute a significant increase in entropy but drastically reduce the potential for complexity and mathematical chaos. Likewise the ideal of the One Great and "melt it all away, until all is One again" of the so-called Chaos Flame at face value is the antithesis of both chaos _and_ entropy so it's difficult to understand what the authors actually mean here. The ending doesn't help much either because it only shows a transition state in a world which demonstrably does not abide real world physics (nor _should_ it, I'm not saying that!). Likewise while real-life rot certainly is an entropy-driven process I am more cautious regarding the Scarlet Rot as such because it is presented more like a true perpetual motion machine, claiming not just decay but also rebirth for itself.

  • @pauliutzi5648

    @pauliutzi5648

    @@Photoloss, I don't quite understand why the Chaos Flame would be the antithesis of entropy. That said, my understanding is based on the idea that, by using the term "Flame" here, the game is at least suggesting an analogy to heat. That interpretation could be wrong. But if it's not, I don't think the Chaos Flame would be the antithesis of entropy at all. It would likely be the highest possible state of entropy. Adding heat to a system increases the entropy of a system. If you increase the heat in a system so much that any internal structure within the system is destroyed, you're going to end up with a very high energy, undifferentiated plasma. Taking into account poetic phrasing, that plasma sounds to me a lot like a Chaos Flame that melts everything away until all is One. Now, granted, if this is an open system where heat can escape, the plasma will eventually phase change back to lower energy phases of matter. Depending on the exact details, it's possible that different particles that condense out of the plasma will have different structures and properties, leading to a return of differentiation to the world. But that's the aftermath of the Chaos Flame, not the Chaos Flame itself.

Regarding Godwyn and Deathblight and the roots, it might be relevant that blights are plant diseases with other usages being metaphorically derived from that. One of the things you two talk about at the end with the body and cells and stuff sounded like apoptosis, not sure if it was but that's an example of useful/healthy decay and recycling for sure.

    Marika seems to be a complex person herself. As clues indicate she may have been a Nox, symbolized with silver, trying to be or create something better than the normal circle of life. But instead of the primitive copper or the silver that often ends in blasphemous acts, she chooses the precious gold, which seems to serve only for individual exquisite destinies. Since under it many marginal figures are neglected. Her change of the natural cycle shows her for Nox typical readiness to turn the natural order upside down and with the legitimation as a god, which the Nox would otherwise be denied, she could implement this on a grand scale. Perhaps the betrayal of the Nox to Marika is also the reason for their downfall.

Essentially some fringe scientists believe that the ingestion of psychedelic mushrooms led to our brains tripling in size and giving us the consciousness that we know today. It also reminds me of some interruptions on how Egyptian royalty used to covert mushrooms for there “unique” experiences they provided. Even going so far as forbidding average folks from even eating them. Although from what I could find it was usually truffles that were preferred over psychedelic types. Regardless just wanted to share some interesting things about mushrooms since we’re on the topic.

    For the small discussion about Chaos, it got me thinking about the mathematical field of chaos theory; A chaotic system there (as far as I've been able to grasp it at least) is a system where, very minute initial conditions can resolve in completely, unpredictably different results. Like if you had a ball bouncing against a curved surface, even if the ball is just like, offset by 0.00000001cm in the beginning, after a few bounces it'd end up somewhere completely different and have traced a trajectory that is unrecognizable compared to the original path it took when not offset. No idea if that can be connected to anything concerning fromsoft's vision of chaos. Perhaps in Dark Souls 1, the different initial conditions between the Witch of Izalith's attempt at a flame, compared to the first flame, even if the difference was tiny, it still resulted in hers going completely berserk and birthing a new race of beings. Most of the time, I feel like it's rare that "chaos" calls itself "chaotic" in fromsoft titles though. Usually it's a way for the ruling body, who likes order, to mark their enemies, with very little thought of if it's actually chaotic or not.

    Just listening to this video today. Regarding the cleanrot knights, I'm the person who found out that their waistcloth resembled 4 winged insects, and I can confirm that their branch-like stuff is labeled cordyceps in material file. Though the waistcloth seems to be a part of body texture and doesn't have specific materials, so I can't tell if it's also a mutation or they just think Miquella's bug stuff is cool and emulate him. Anyway, I have access to most, if not all of character files. If you want any character specifically examined, I'd be happy to look through that whenever I have time.

    Hello, I am a bit late for the comment section but the ant thing that you guys talked about is a deadly poisonous kind of ant (we hate them here, they are like on the floor wasps kinda thing). Something about that ant is that not only their sting causes insufferable inflammation, but squashing them bare hand also leave the poison on the skin and left a “rotten” scar on the skin. My friend did that and that patch of skin on her arm did not heal properly; the skin turned redish brown. Something reminded me of how Malenia left the scarlet rot on General Rahdan.

    Super fun video! I was really hoping you'd touch on the idea that the Fingers could be intelligent fungus. Given that the ordovician period predates both dragons (dinosaurs) and trees! Not to mention the period nomenclature included in elden ring. Selurian, derriwilian, floian lol The spirit npcs have mushrooms growing off them. Spirit energy, esp as seen throughout the underground cities, seem to act like spores. When we die we dissipate like spores. The fingers communicate between organisms. They control through the influence of the erd tree via grace and shadows..

    Entropy can locally decrease, or else regions of higher order would not be possible. But globally entropy is found to always increase. It is not a law like other ‘laws’ of physics. It is more like a statistical likelihood, but it is so incredibly unlikely for entropy to decrease globally (for example all the air in a room to rush to the corner, which is physically possible, or for heat to gather up again into a single point after being diffused across a material) that is appears to us as a law of nature that isn’t violated. For example you could come up with a law that states, a well-shuffled pack of cards can never again be in the correct order. We know logically it is possible, so it isn’t a law, but practically it is so incredibly unlikely for a pack of cards to return to the correct order after shuffling that it does appear to almost be a law of nature. Also sorry my physics grad brain wasn’t sure about your definition of energy being lost as entropy increasing. It is true that entropy increase involves changes of energy, most often into heat. But energy loss in itself is not an accurate definition of entropy.

    Perhaps the conflict is in the concept of energy neither created nor destroyed. Just transfered. Also the male female troupes in game could potentially be manifestation/embodiment of the masculine and feminine. Duality.

    the Outer Gods seem to be egoistic principles that in detail would cause an ecosystem to topple. An "intention" would sound rather exaggerated and comes rather from the personification by their believers. The balance of the various aspects of life is a complex and delicate structure. And it seems that interfering as Marika did is not healthy for everyone.

    This was an awesome video. Just prior to watching it I had made a comment in Smoughtowns vid regarding the Frenzied Flame and the Scarlet Rot that I feel could be brought up here: Could the start of the Golden Order also have triggered Rot to become Scarlet Rot? Rotting as pointed out here is a post mortem process. We know the Golden Order starts with the removal of death, could this be a situation like in Dark Souls how the Dark was once benign but through being denied by the constant link of fire was driven "wild." The Ancestor spirits and their worship may represent the previous state of Rot. The Blind Swordsmen would have had to face the Rot god either just before or during the time of the Golden Order for him to still be alive to teach Malenia. I tend to favor it happened just before the Golden Order was started as the Blue Dancer Charm does not cast the Rot god as Outer, just ancient*. *I sub to the JP community understanding that Outer Gods are more like Kami where as the greater will is a Supreme god. They are regarded as Outer in the context of being gods outside the worship of the Golden Order.

    Well technically if you only count the organism as a whole rot can occur even while it's still alive. The "sickness" i.e. the status effect also called Scarlet Rot as well as some of the fungal growths and the kindred of rot seem like aspects which could be part of a balanced natural ecosystem. The sludge, mutant wildlife and general impression of zerg/tyranids definitely are the result of corruption but probably more tied to Erdtree burial rather than to the sealing of Death or the scorpion.
