    Omg me too! Also, not saying that Nikkie looks old, but I think JoJo looks like 10, almost 20 years older with that makeup. I would've enjoyed a video where he does two looks; first one specifically tailored to their guest. Like with JoJo I would've done something light on the skin, simple but sparkly on the eyes. For example, one colored glitter eye look. And the second look would be complete makeover, going over the top or doing something completely different the guest is used to. I should watch the OG video because I honestly can't even guess where he was going with that, or if he even had something in my mind, or if he just started slapping makeup on her :D

    Yes me to I loved the way he explained this as this is what I wanted to explain it like. I am a qualified makeup artist and I agree that creativity is something you can not teach it’s either in you or it’s not! You get your self taught make up artists that are incredibly talented but applying makeup on yourself and actually doing it on someone else is totally different! I have always been good at applying make up on myself and my friends when I was younger told me i should be a makeup artist. When I finally got round to going to college to do it I never felt so out of my comfort zone because every make up look was done on a client and I thought I knew it all but applying makeup on other people is a different ball game! Took me two years of being a freelance makeup artist to feel comfortable putting make up on others and i still learn new things even now. In college there are rules you learn when applying makeup especially in SFX makeup to do with hygiene and health and safety! Theatrical makeup the rule of thumb is to over exaggerate the make up and powder is your friend! But then in beauty prom wedding make up you want less is more and to create the glow of a bride you need to be able to powder but only to a certain degree. One rule of makeup once you’ve put all your powers down never after go in and lay down a liquid product over it cause it goes cakey! So for instance I’ve seen people do this so many time apply the foundation powder the foundation and then put down the concealer this is a no no so. Another rule which people don’t do and you can get away with it but the helps so much if you learn it and that is when applying a contour or even a bronzer I’ve see people put down the brush in the middle of the cheek now that is where all the product falls and the brunt of it lays then it’s hard to blend out! I always start from the outer corner and move my brush in upward circular motion moving toward the middle instead of starting in the middle moving outward if that make sense! I agree with Robert on everything! He’s awesome!!!! Xxx

    I have to disagree with you, it's not about piling on loads of products about technique and other things. It takes skills to do what he does even though it may be his way of doing it and isnt qualified as a makeup artist. This isn't a easy done task, to have makeup as beautiful as James Charles actually can create you need skill, you'd notice this if you actually went through his Channel and seen other videos and other looks, sorry if I sound rude but i don't see how you can try invalidate his talent and amazing artistry.

    All have good points but in order to grow as a makeup artist you do have to challenge yourself into doing different styles. Not everyone likes this look. This look does not fit Jojo whatsoever. It’s fun forsure but the makeup that she started off with was much better then what he did. A makeup artist is supposed to empower and bring out the natural beauty in the individual. I think he failed on that aspect.

    It’s so easy to dismiss someone’s entire career to make oneself feel better. The arrogance of ’I wouldn’t consider him a MUA’ is too much. Makeup is art, art is subjective. There’s no one right or wrong way of doing it.

  • @VeronicaSpark

    The fact that Robert is gracious enough to pose the question of whether or not someone like James Charles could be considered MUA-level - with some considerations, of course - is deeply refreshing and quite frankly, inspiring. This level of generosity, openness and willingness to hold space is one of the main reasons I love watching both his and his brother James' content (I especially love it when they collaborate! 😍). I'm a classically trained musician, so I have faced innumerable situations where snobbery was doled out in spades. There is always someone looking for someone else to "critique," to point out all the things they're not doing "up to proper standards" and to provide a long list of reasons somebody isn't "a real musician." This kind of attitude is more widely seen among professionals, or among students at the end of their training, and normally aimed at younger students, or at peers at a similar level. Robert is a professional with a long and successful career; he is great at what he does, he's careful and meticulous, and he obviously knows what he's talking about. He could've very easily gone the snob route and just pointed out all the reasons for which "James is not and could not be a proper MUA." Instead, he is holding space not only to consider the question seriously, but to share it with his viewers and genuinely pose it to them as well. Stand-up character and energy. Stand-up human being. Stand-up professional. Thank you so much, Robert! Not just fo sharing your talent with us, but also your humanity, your grace and your Spark! 🙏🏼💖🌟

    I follow the Lisa Eldridge method: I apply makeup at the center of my face and blend it out towards the perimeter. And I like to build up slowly IF needed. When I see them putting two pumps on the face and THEN spending infinite time trying to blend all that product I get anxiety: that is wall rendering technique. I also apply powder with a MAC 217 brush....I mean....only where I absolutely need it. Anyway, it was fun seeing Jojo turn into Nikki tutorials!

    Also, do a light layer then see where you actually need to build product. Instead of a lot where it might not be needed. A great example is that acne video Lisa did years ago with the teen that had acne. Most of her face was clear but people think because its all over their face that its their whole face. I'm so glad I learnt from her before the drag style came in. if I was 14 now, I'd be devastated by the fact that I can't wear makeup like that. Although I can do it, I understand the frustration.

    I’m also a makeup artist and although I have a style that I prefer, I think the major thing about my work is that it’s not about me. It’s not about forming a client in my image or the image I would prefer them to be, it’s about their face and their occasion. My clients are from 15 to 90 and I very often feel like many of these makeup youtubers can only put their own face on someone their own age.

  • @muamelanie

    @muamelanie

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@bhhandel totally agree. And when you work on different shaped faces and eyes, not everyone can do those looks. People are learning how to contour and product placement from someone who only knows what to do on their own face. And then they either are disappointed because the looks don't flatter their structure or they just think that's how they should do makeup.

  • @bhhandel

    @bhhandel

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@muamelanie Exactly. I think that's the major difference between being a make-up artist and being good at doing makeup. Anyone can learn a technique, but it's knowing how to adapt the technique, who to use it on, what products to use and what works for when that's the trick, makeup is as much a craft as it is artistry. I remember Sam Chapman saying in an interview that there were so many girls who looked fantastic on instagram, but seeing them in real life made her want to scream, I can relate to that. Makeup should be about creating something individual, not making everybody look the same, and life is rarely lived through a photo, it has to work on an actual person in actual life.

    I know, I loved the whole look with the exception of the nose contour. It was really excessive and not even necessary, because her nose is already tiny. A little light contour to define the nose is ok for a dramatic look, but this was heavy and not even blended.

    I think there is something to be said about how modern makeup techniques, applied to teenagers, is many a time used to make them look *older*. The difference between how JoJo looked in the beginning (definitely skewing younger, but that is what she likes, but it was mostly just her face apart from the highlighter situation), versus the “after”... I would look at how JoJo looks and assume that she was older than she is. And I am not saying that that is necessarily “bad”, but I think there is a pervading Western idea that pushes young girls to look older and older and, in that vein, more sexualized. And where that concerns me is the age. Because they are still *minors*. And even between when I was a teenager (I am 24) to teenagers now... It’s such an insane shift. That said, I *will* say there is a new push in the Gen Z sphere for more natural looking, “cleaner” beauty that pushes away from the more (for lack of a better term) “mature”, stage-like makeup that was popular in the 2010’s. And I hope it resonates. Because girls should be allowed to be awkward teenagers, allowed to be children, without feeling like they need to look “sexy” or “more mature” at ages 12-13 (!!!) to 17. Aaaanyway, I’ll set off my soapbox now.

    Peanut_Peter i don’t think they meant it with hate. I think what they were trying to say is that although he did her makeup softer, it’s the same type of makeup, it’s almost as if he had a template and copied it into everyone’s face, you know? Like they said, he contoured her nose when she doesn’t need that, it’s the little technical things that separate an MUA from a beauty guru. And it’s not just James Charles, a lot of beauty gurus do this. However, I do think he really tried to adapt his way of doing makeup to her and I have to give him props for that, he’s still young, he’ll learn more through the years. I just wanted to say this bc I felt that you didn’t really get what they meant.

If he was a pro MUA, you should be able to do makeup on anyone's face without blanking them out, packing on the makeup, and making them look completely different. Makeup is suppose to emphasize your natural beauty and that's what a lot of people are looking for when they want to get their makeup done. I mean, unless you're going to a red carpet event or on stage for a long amount of time then nvm pack on the product.

    I think it's worth considering that influencer makeup has a different purpose: JC has publicly stated that he views his channel more as a form of entertainment, rather than something necessarily helpful or tutorial-like. Which I think is fine. Makeup has so many purposes, and entertainment is just one of them. Is influencer makeup something that an everyday person can do? No. Is it appropriate everywhere? It may not be. And that's ok. More than viewing this video as a makeup-artist trying to successfully do makeup on someone else, highlighting their best features, etc, I think the tone of this was definitely more about using makeup as a medium to interview Jojo--kind of like removing the "face" that everyone else sees to see a different side to her. I think influencers do use a heavy hand because it looks good on camera (which is kinda important) and it's become more of a brand. That's why I tend to follow MUAs like Robert for their advice and I watch JC's videos for entertainment. I agree that her nose contour was a lil jank tho, but again, I don't really care because I was more interested in learning about Jojo than the actual makeup.
