It was reported (2 minutes after this video went live) that Boris Johnson was going to resign. So while Johnson may be criticised for a whole number of things, his biggest crime right now (at least in my eyes) is that he ruined our video schedule and made me stay up until 3 am for no reason. If you want moment by moment updates over the next day (before we're able to get a new video out) be sure to follow us on Twitter, just search for TLDR News UK

To be honest, no matter how much pandering there is sometimes around our politics here in Portugal, with such an ammount and gravity of scandals, the President should have dissolved the Parliament long ago and called for general elections right away. Frankly I was expecting another outcome from the world's oldest parliamentary system.

I think this is a problem with having a constitutional monarchy. In theory the Queen could do that, but as she is not elected that would be problematic. She's expected to only act "on the advice" of her government. So when the government is the problem there's not much she can do without breaking long established conventions about not interfering in politics. A president who has been elected or appointed by Parliament would have more power to intervene. There could be a compromise. The UK could have a Governor General like the other Commonwealth Realms do. They would effectively be the acting head of state and could make decisions like this, with the Queen becoming strictly a figurehead.

@@Psyk60 true. That reminds me though of a special episode in Portuguese History, when after the Liberal Revolution of 1820 and its radical Constitution, king D. Pedro IV wrote himself a new Constitution with not 3 but 4 Powers. The 4th one, called "Moderator Power", gave the monarch exactly such power of dissolving the Parliament, without compromising the balance of powers back then. I guess the problem here is this species of powerless Head of State, that cannot intervene in a situation like this, where clearly the Government has no more moral grounds to function, but still manages to linger on.

Great coverage guys! This channel seems to be a reliable source! Not to downplay or anything but this shows just how developed the UK actually is! Allegations like this which is relatively (relative to politicians from other parts of the world) nothing can take the ruling party down. Only if it was the same with all other countries.
