If your not using the same amount of powder for each. What's the point? Get rid of the wad and make it equal amounts then the test I'd like to see.

Are you compressing the powder enough with the loading lever? Or you may chronograph the wads flying through?

Have you tried the Johnston and Dow bullet without the wad but lube the groove only and go up to 25 grains? Plus I was always wary of chronograph readings that close with black powder. Seems like the fire and particles sets things of soon and late causing erroneous readings. To get a true reading I'd take off the shades and try it at 10 yards with and overcast sky. Since the bullets are shooting high there'd be less likely to shoot low and hit your chronograph. Every chronograph I've had shot and i have had 2 shot were shot by other people LOL........I enjoy your videos.

Leatherbark I use either bore butter or Crisco over my rounds and have good luck that way. The lube goes in before the round and helps it out in my opinion.

Hey Duke, why not redo this and load the .454s with 22 grs just like the J&D bullets and see how they compare that way.

I use a Lee 120 gr bullet in my 36 cal revolver with 18 gr of powder and a wad. Out of my 5.5 inch barrel I have got around 600 fps, not a barn burner but accurate.

Your supposed to get 760 with 25 grains of swiss 3f, something wrong with your numbers.

The round ball velocity with 30 grains Goex should be in the 875-890 range, with 30 grains Pyrodex just above 900 a tad. Something way fishy about you readings, likely the wads messin' with your chrony. Can't speak to the 217 grain J&D over 22 grains, but a 220 grain Lee over 30 grains Goex gives velocity in the 715-730 fps range. You might want to just run a couple or three test shots with each bullet over 25 grains Goex with no wads to see if you get better readings. I've even seen one guy achieve a smidgen over 1,000 fps on a couple shots with 35 grains of Pyrodex under a round ball.

Oh most certainly the wads did mess up my readings. This is one of those redo videos that is on the list.

Duke, I have the same challenge with my bp chrony results. The errors are coming from either the wads, or the smoke. That's what I figure. It doesn't happen when shooting smokeless powder loads, but I always seem to get errors when I shoot bp. Even happens with my muzzleloader rifles. just my thoughts.

In another test that will air in a couple weeks, you can see a wad smack the chronograph, so I think you are absolutely right.

I was going to post the same comment. Last time I tried to chrono some black powder loads I had to set the chrono closer than that, and I not only got errors, but the velocity ranged from 220 fps to 2000 fps out of a 45 colt! I was using the same brand of chrono as yours.

Very weird! You're getting unusually low velocities out of these 30 grains of holy black! With good, dry powder, I hardly ever go below 800 fps (30grs of FFFg Złoty Stok black powder and .454 lead ball) ZS powder that I use is pretty much the same as goex as far as velocities go. I Wonder why you're getting so low velocities. I have a few suggsestions why is that. It could be either of these. Your powder might be too wet or your cylinder to barrel gap is extremaly excessive or your barrel diameter is bigger than that of the chambers… I bet your powder absorbed too much mositure and that is responsible for this huge decrease in velocity. Waiting for your reply and in the mean time, good luck and have fun!

No offense, but nothing seem consistent in this test. A heavier bullet with less powder and a different aerodynamic design against a lighter ball with more powder and a different aerodynamic design. The outcome was already predictable. If the conclusion is that you can only shoot the JD bullet at 22 grains max and this is the best it will ever do. Because the cylinder wont hold any more powder then that. I get your point. A Colt Walker .44 will hold 40 gr. of 3f Goex powder with no wad being used with the JD bullet. You might get 30 grains without a wad. With the Walker an 40 grains of BP the grouping was tighter. I know these test are difficult to do. The test is inconclusive at this time. Thanks for testing it. It has to have better penetration as a conical for sure.
