We really don’t need a new Smash game after this. At this point I’d be content with them porting this game to future consoles and adding new content. Any other non-ported attempt will most likely cause us to lose so many characters.

The only thing they could do to make it more interesting is if it was a spinoff or reboot that focuses on the platforming and adventure elements of past entries, and brings back character interactions that change depending on the hero of your choosing. The roster would be limited, like you said we will lose so many fan favorites, but the experience could be more compact and refreshing.

I feel like the only type of sequel that would make sense would be something that took the series in a new direction. Otherwise, just keep porting this game.

You know I wouldn’t mind Spirits being the sole replacement of Trophies if they at least had detailed descriptions of the spirit just like the trophies did so you can at least learn a little history of the character and where it came from(I know you can google it but hey I like the novelty of learning it within the game)

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the reason they replaced trophies with spirits is BECAUSE of those descriptions. Keep in mind that every description would have to have a translated version for at least 8 different languages. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't bummed about that exclusion myself, but I can certainly see WHY they were removed.

I think my favorite Classic Mode route is Mega Man. His big boss - Galleom from Brawl - is the penultimate fight instead of the ending. The final fight is... Dr. Mario, in homage to Dr. Wily. But it doesn't end there! After KOing him a Mewtwo pops up, in reference to Mega Man 2's final boss fight against Wily's alien hologram. Funny stuff.

Too bad there's no Round 2 of Ultimate, but to be fair, who'd want to play as the utterly stupid Piranha Plant? I'd rather play as Lakitu. Or even the Lakitu Bros from Super Mario 64, before I play as a dumb plant. And I can't even play as ANY of the DLC characters. But if I could, THEN I'd play as that dumb plant. Because just having even one DLC character playable would be fine for me...

Where I live, I don't have Internet. I'm just saying, if I could play as the entire cast of DLC characters, THEN, I would play as the plant. But if I had to play as the Piranha Plant to unlock the others like Sephiroth or Sora, or Joker, I definitely would. Because I love the KH series, and Persona, especially Persona 5. Seriously, I just got the newest PS5 sequel. I would definitely go out and get the DLC if I could, are you kidding? Sora? Joker? Sephiroth? Banjo & Kazooie, Terry Bogard, Hero from Dragon Quest, (yet ANOTHER series the late, great Akira Toriyama worked on, along with Chrono Trigger), Kazuya Mishima from Tekken?, the blocky guy from Minecraft? Those sound like amazing characters to put into Smash Bros. especially because I love Tekken, Dragon Quest, and Banjo & Kazooie, and Banjo Tooie. I never played Fatal Fury or KOF though. I have heard of the series though, and it looks interesting, like a rival series to SF, or Tekken. Which i think it is, right? I would've loved to see Kazuya or Ryu, taking on Terry...would've been cool.

While I understand you saying that World of Light doesn't really have a story, its conclusion is so epic that I hope everyone can play through it. I had to turn the difficulty down to easy to enjoy it the way I wanted to, which is a bit of a bummer, but that doesn't change the fact that I was HOOKED. I loved the puzzle solving, the various references the world map made, and the hefty amount of creativity that went into the various battles. It's incredible, but I can understand why people would say it's tedious. I really wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did, and I'm so happy I did. It was a blast.

He said he didn't beat it before this review, kind of a shame, but at least he didn't rush this review, WoL is better if you take your time. Also It's great that anyone of a diffent skill level can enjoy it, you can put it on easy and grind your spirits if you get stuck, I prefer super high challenge and selected hard, and I appreciate how they didn't hold back with hard mode, the CPUs are even better than previous games most of the time.

Once I got the Metal Face spirit (promote Mumkar), and stuck that on Donkey Kong, then giant metal DK destroyed most opponents within 10 seconds. Three up tilts is usually all you need, even if you have a type disadvantage. It took me just over 10 hours to 100% on normal difficulty. The ending's made even more epic if you watch the game theory by the way.

People think it's way too tedious is because of the overly abundant Spirit battles and little to no variety in the 1st half of the mode, not only that, it just goes on for way too long. I'm in the 2nd half of the mode now and I can say that it's certainly a lot better than the 1st half but you're essentially doing the same thing but to a lesser extent.

Spoilers for all of World of Light: I couldn't agree more! I just wish I didn't get unlucky with spoilers (had both Marx and playable Master Hand spoiled for me) but I had a fantastic time with world of light nevertheless. It also helps that I was expecting star allies Marx and not the awesome OG design from super star, and I actually didn't believe the person who told me about playable master hand. Multiple endings and the game theory video also took me by surprise and made me like it even more, along with all the references to the games these fighters come from.

I wish the world of spirits was like subspace rather than just OP battles I would even take a literal remake of subspace

I've actually upped the saturation on my tv whenever I play Ultimate to solve the color palette issue. It works great!!!

You are ABSOLUTELY underselling world of light. The fact that each fight is thematically placed and each makes a specific reference to a game series made it really fun to go through. While it does get repetetive eventually, the novelty of each battle and its clever references never got old. Also, dungeon areas and the areas you need specific spirits to access were neat. I don't think it's amazing by any means, but I do think you glossed over a lot of good things about it.

The last hour of world of light is wonderful, I enjoyed it in it’s entirety but the ending is a highlight

This is game is seriously chock-full of content. Good job, Nintendo!

Dark samus plays EXACTLY like samus except electric instead of fire, and she is remembered? cmon. he just doesnt like fe.

@@OneGamer2EnvyThemAll I think he's just sick of all the unnecessary FE love. I know I am too. FE is a fun series, but even just one more Fire Emblem character was too much in my eyes. He's the only new addition that shouldn't have even been considered, in my opinion.

The ultimate christmas gift, thanks John. For WOL I would say that they designed that mode with the Switch's portability in mind, meaning it's a pick up and play mode for wherever you go and put down whenever you want. Happy holidays

Great review for an amazing game. And Johnny I'd like to thank you for taking the time to produce high quality scripts but being one of the few people on youtube who puts inflection into their voice so you don't SOUND like you're reading from a script. It's a very underappreciated skill.

I don't see the point in doing a sequel when you could just add to this game with updates and DLC (hoping for more fighters passes in the future) but yeah although it gets a little frustrating sometimes and I am disappointed about the lack of trophies or how all star has been changed I am still loving this game it's a complete blast anyway merry xmas to ya Johnny as well as the rest of SGB and BSC for a great year look forward to more in the future

I know that feeling that somecallmejohnny is going to do a round 2 review of super smash bros ultimate for the 5th anniversary of game along with its dlc of fighter pass 1, fighter pass vol 2, and talking about the entire world of light story mode this year.

unlocking characters with classic mode is the best way of doing it to me, its great seeing how the route for every character is like then you unlock one character each time you finish it, takes way longer but it has been really fun to do

Merry Christmas. CONGRATULATIONS Elliott. I like World of Light a lot. It's grindy sure but it reminds me a lot of the original zelda. And the throwbacks and easter eggs in it always make me smile. Like the way you unlock ryu just made my heart jump. I think i actually cried a little. But yeah world of light is bare bones so i can see why someone would be like meh.

1:43 True. but its a physiological trick humans do. We can't comprehend all the names and people that made the game, so we associate the game with one person. In this case Masahiro Sakurai. Think about all the games you've played and say: "This person made this game." Its interesting.

I gotta agree with Thundaga... Unless the series has a developer with a face (like Kojima, Miyamoto, Sakurai etc.) people usually credit the developer. Sakurai no doubt gets the focus the most compared to other instances you can point out. Also, some people do legitimately think Sakurai does everything to the balance, music, DLC, when it's impossible for that to be all him.

I wonder if he'll do a Round 2 episode on this now that all the DLC has rolled out.

Merry Christmas Johnny! Gotta say, my Smash hype since the summer was a roller coaster ride. I was through the roof when my boi Solid Snake was back, but PISSED when Shadow was announced as an assist trophy. But all in all, this was bar-none my #1 game this year. I’ve played for a week straight, and just had nothing but fun. Here’s to my highly anticipated games of 2019! Ace Combat 7, Jump Force, Devil May Cry 5, and Team Sonic Racing here I come!

Smash Ultimate is one the few games I'm legit hyped for nowadays, next to Doom Eternal and Devil May Cry 5. Always nice to see Johnny's review of it, and this just makes me excited for Christmas. Only a few days left!

They may be using the voice clips from Brawl but it is so good to hear David Hayter voicing Snake again.

Johnny time makes for the best Christmas gifts. And can you believe it's already going to be 2019?

The joke is that most people only credit Sakurai as the only developer.

Johnny... this is ENTIRELY off-topic, but here's a cat-tip. DON'T FEED YOUR CAT DRY FEED! I am not kidding, it's incredibly unhealthy! I will put it simply here, it has to do with the lack of moisture even if you have water for her. Just feed her wet food and you will have her a LOT longer, I know from experience of three entire generations of cat owners ^^

I hope we get additional modes and content with updates, like an update that adds Home Run Contest, maybe Smash Run, Target Smash, heck, Board the Platforms! That would be pretty great and really help with the singleplayer content, even if I like World of Light.

For me, I wouldn’t mind a mode where you can create a Classic route.

Great video, Johnny! I personally loved World of Light. I took it nice and slow over the course of the last two weeks and just finished it the other day. The last couple of hours were especially great. Ended up going for 100%. I didn't really care for the levels in Subspace Emissary, I just kept playing it for the cutscenes. If we could have gotten a plethora of cutscenes like in Subspace with this sort of gameplay, it would've been a lot better.
