Can you imagine if today we had just one politician with the heart and knowledge and the guts to stand up and lead like Michael Collins?! This world wouldn’t be as messed up as it is now! God bless Michael Collins.

I visited Ireland with my late father a few years ago. Michael Collins was one of Dad's personal heroes, so I took Dad to visit Michael Collins' grave at Glasnevin on our last day in Ireland. I'll never forget the way Dad wept, he was so overcome with emotion. The story of Michael Collins is a true Irish tragedy, and all I could think at the time standing there in front of his grave was that he was the same age when he died as I was at the time (early 30s). So sad.

On a far off August day, cold young men in ambush lay On a roadside on a hill where flowers grow So much hate for one so young, who was right and who was wrong Though a thousand years may pass we’ll never know CHORUS Candles dripping blood, they placed beside your shoulders Rosary beads like teardrops on your fingers Friends and comrades standin by, in their grief they wonder why Michael in our hour of need you had to go And when evening twilight came, gentle fell the August rain Oh but you lay still and silent on the ground As we hung our heads in prayer, in our sorrow and dispare We wondered was it friend or foe who shot you down Chorus Now the flame that you held high, when you called out to the sky To end this senseless killing and this shame Has now passed to other hands and is carried through the land By some not fit to even speak your name

Honestly can't understand why people make comments on things they obviously haven't a clue about. Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith were given the unenviable job of going to London to negotiate a treaty with the British Prime Minister lyod George who by the elected republican president who knew before sending both of them that the partition of the island had already been agreed with the northern protestants. Which would give them control of the 6 richer counties to the north east of the island. Collins and Griffith had no choice but to accept British terms as refusal would have led to all out war one which Collins as head of the IRA knew he could not win. If you do any reading into the subject you can easily see his reasoning for accepting the terms and try to move forward in a more political and peaceful way and I have studied this and in my opinion had Collins not being shot it's very likely Ireland would be now a unified country.

Collins was in a difficult position. He was trying to gather support for a Treaty that was unpopular with many, and was shot down because Dev made a childish refusal to accept that the people of Ireland had voted for Michael's treaty. It is my opinion that Dev saw him a threat to his power (Collins won the War of Independence, so he would've been a popular figure), so sent him to Britain when he knew that the British wouldn't give them the republic (I think that Dev would've gone himself if he thought for a second they would give them the republic). May General Michael Collins, The Man Who Won The War, and the finest man Ireland has ever produced, Rest In Peace. Respect from Australia P.S. May De Valera rot in Hell for eternity, the snivelling bugger.

That is an inaccurate and ignorant retelling of a complex and intricate history. De velera did this country and outstanding service throughout the 1930s and is the reason we are no longer swearing an oath of allegiance to the crown, also the reason 3 irish ports are no longer in British hands, also the reason we no longer pay land annuities to the crown, do I have to continue? Educate yourself for God's sake.

@@jamccash you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Éamon De Valera is the reason you are not currently swearing and oath of allegiance to the Crown. Or the reason we stayed independent in WW2. Or the reason we survived as a young nation. You are ignorant and obviously base all of your thoughts off the Micheal Collins film. Educate yourself.

Michael Collins was a true hero and although he knew he was signing his own death warrant he did it to save civilians. I can't confirm but the rumour was that the British said if he didn't sign they would use the RAF to drop mustard gas bombs on civilians. He was a brave and courageous man who scrificed himself for Ireland. Although the partition of Ireland has caused suffering on both sides it looks like the Dream of a fully free and united Ireland is politicaly inevitable.
