What a great player and a fantastic passer of a ball and a great person as well. Saw him play when I was 6 years old and to actually play with him was unbelievable. John Dempsey ex Fulham player

He was a very accurate passer of the ball. Not a Fulham fan but saw him play live a few times in the 60’s. Top player.

When I saw Johnny Haynes at Goodison Park in the early 1960s he stood out in his ability to play the forward pass and always seemed unhurried. Just in my teens i thought he was like John White and Jimmy McIlroy who could link up play with ease. Back then Everton had players like Alex Young and Roy Vernon who were also highly talented and league champions. Now six decades later few players match up to these. Imagine Johnny Haynes and Bobby Charlton playing on the perfect pitches we have today all through the season. And protection from any defenders who try to cancel them out

@seanreillyireland I think that George Cohen is talking about the ball of the era's tendency to soak up water because he says something to the effect of "-by the time the game ended-" in the interview IIRC.

@TheLegendfamily I know, but its still a horribly heavy ball. Believe it or not, I've got my hands on a few balls of early 70's vintage and they're beautiful to strike, particularly the curve is so clean and subtle. But 32 oz is ridiculous... I'm not doubting him, but to try to send in a cross with your lesser (left) foot just wouldn't be possible for me, I'd end up wrecking my right knee and still delivering a poor cross. And so many great wingers were built like Finney rather than Liddel!

@TheLegendfamily 32 oz = 907.184 g. Thats almost a kilogram! Thats over TWICE the weight of todas ball... surely an exaggeration?

For all Johnny's undoubted talents can't help thinking should have gone to Spurs early sixties and furthered his stellar career and let Fulham progress with emerging talents I.e. Rodney Marsh a d Malcom Macdonald. You see John y basically stunted progression, as a result it took over thirty years to recover. I know it won't be a popular sentiment but saw him play and often felt his frustration at the donkeys around him.
