What a lot of people don't realize was Merle Haggard was actually in the audience of that performance because he was an inmate at San Quentin at the time. It was actually him watching that concert of Johnny Cash's while in there that inspired him to turn his life around and he found what he wanted to do after he got out.

Wrong. Haggard was in Folsom when Cash performed there years before the performance on the Folsom Prison Blues album. By this time, 1969, Merle already had several hits.

Johnny Cash performed at least 30 prisons throughout his career. He received a lot of fan mail from inmates.

Johnny Cash was a legend from the beginning! He had that rough and tough swagger with a heart of gold, that anyone could see in his performances!! Thank you for sharing this priceless moment of him singing for the prisoners! He delighted them for that short visit “from the outside!” He did another famous song, Folsom Prison Blues, if I remember the name correctly! That particular prison is almost in my back yard!!

Johnny Cash is amongst the very best we've ever had. He is both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Only one other artist has achieved that - Elvis Presley.

The warden didn’t want him to perform , I think it was Folsom prison blues as to rile up and excite the prisoners. Johnny was like ok and then performed it anyway.

He performed at several prisons. He never looked down on them, believing everyone deserved a second chance and respect. He also performed his song Folsom Prison Blues at both San Quentin and Folsom Prisons as well. You should consider reacting to Man In Black also. Also Ira Hayes, it's about one of the Marines who raised the American flag at Iwo Jima.

Thanks for the reaction, guys. I love this song 'cause it somehow gives another picture of Johnny Cash quite unusual in his repertoire. Now there are a couple of lines at the beginning of the song which he intentionally omitted IMO. The lines said appromimately this (I'm quoting them from the top of my head): Some girls would giggle and my face went red and some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head" or somthing in that line. Any way, Thanks again.

Shel Silverstein was a brilliant poet, humorist, and author. His poem "Sarah Cynthia Stout (would not take the garbage out) was released by Dr. Hook and was a gas. It's worth checking out. "Sue" was his biggest hit thanks to Johnny cash.

  • @gbulmer

I liked that. It was released (🤔) when I was a kid. I haven't heard it in decades. It always sounded like a plot for a 'movie'. San Quentin was a *serious* prison. It had a 'death row'. (wikipedia: the _only_ 'death row' in CA, and a gas chamber! 😞). I heard about 'death row' back then. So I've always felt huge respect for Johnny Cash. A friend lived in Berkeley. I _think_ she drove over the Richmond bridge and said San Quentin prison's over there. 😱 Strange feeling.

@@BritPopsReact There's plenty of '70s stuff on YT, but AFAICT, not much '60s. There're live music (archives) recorded with impeccable BBC quality, eg. Old Grey Whistle Test (1971) with cracking live performances. You've found interesting US recordings. The audio isn't great, but I like _"Steely Dan - Do it Again - Midnight Special Live 1972"_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/opmmxrGogbyul6w.html which has the 'live show' lead vocalist, David Palmer, not Donald Fagan. Fagan suffered bad stage fright and didn't want to sing live, so management hired Palmer for tours. Palmer left during 'Dan's 2nd album, so that Midnight Special is unusual. People would only hear that live during the tour for 'Dan's first album.

This is great fun. Johnny does another song called One Piece At A Time that has this same wacky kind of lyric. My burning question is: Are we finally breaking down the Country & Western Wall around BP!? Stay tuned! Maybe he'd like a country song that makes fun of country songs, written by a folk artist from Chicago and performed by country star David Allan Coe. It's called You Never Even Call Me By My Name. Greatest last verse ever.

i think country music, especially as performed by johnny cash, is too niche to have broad appeal. so, it's not surprising that he only had one top 10 hit. this humorous song had a broader appeal and that's why it ranked so high. but i am surprised that "ring of fire" was not a top 10 song.
