Delightful. Song was written by Johnny’s friend, the poet Shel Silverstein. This is first record I ever got, my dad drove me to the record store when it came out. I was not yet 5. I still have it even if Johnny and my dad have passed on. Thanks, guys Ps - meeting Cash and being hugged by him felt like being touched by the hand of God. Definitely a highlight in a life well lived,

My father who has also crossed over to the other side camp has also given me a love for Johnny Cash. I remember riding in a bus with him to Alaska with the 8-track in, and listening to Cash, Holly, Lynn, Jones among many others. This was one of his favorites to play, besides Pink Carnation

I don't know if others have brought it up, but the best thing about this song is that he was in San Quetin singing among the prisoners. Treating people like human beings and showing them respect. It was an historic moment.

I was 3 in 1969. My parents played this album a lot during my childhood but I haven't heard it in decades until today. My husband and I got married in mid July, 28 years ago and we just returned from our anniversary trip to Gatlinburg Tennessee. For the first time in my life I heard the line "it was Gatlinburg in mid July". Funny how words written 50+ years ago can hit a familiar key at just the right time.

Johnny Cash was my neighbor back in the 60’s in a small town here near Ojai California 👍🏽 One of a kind The house is still there and they filmed inside of it when they produced the Movie called Walk The Line about the life of Johnny Cash. He also owned a small mobile home park that was called Johnny Cash’s Trailer Court nearby.. He loved Jamaica and bought land there later on..

If you want storytelling, How about "Dr Hook"? Maybe "I got stoned and I missed it" or "Sylvia's Mother". Lots of 70's gold there.

Shel Silverstein is the songwriter for this song. He's written for several artists, and has his own albums and poetry books/recordings. "The Unicorn", "One's on the Way" . I remember singing "Boa Constrictor" in school.
