    And another thing about her is that she wasn't just "strong female character", but also a woman of business, a 2nd hand and a believable daughter without it giving the "I'm better than you" vibe that most Disney characters have these days

    I’ve heard a few reviewers complain that Skarsgard’s Marquis was underwhelming in terms of being the antagonist and posing an actual threat. But I think that Skarsgard did a great job in the role by doing exactly what the character of the Marquis was written to be: being such an unlikeable dick that my theatre straight up burst into applause upon his death.

  • @Jake-dh9qk

    @Jake-dh9qk

    I like how the Marquis is really just some random servant in the High Table organization instead of someone who's menacing. It makes the High Table seem even more scarier because the power that the Marquis holds is literally given to him by orders of the High Table, yet we never see the actual organization. We only see a mid-level servant wielding power given to him and all the firepower he can pull against John Wick. It really proves how the Marquis isn't even important, he's just some guy that can be replaced by another person. The true power comes from the High Table and they are untouchable, even to the Baba Yaga. In all of the 4 movies combined, John Wick has only killed around 300 men. These are probably just a fraction of a percent all the men at the disposal of the entire High Table.

    @@Jake-dh9qk yeah fully, it’s to the point where the only way for our protagonist to win is to escape from the table or to help Break the rules of the table and get away with this. Really shows the true power of the table. Also wicks bodies in this month of the movies are probably also only a small portion of his lifetime, but even johns kill count is only a part

    The thing I love of about this movie is that it doesn't try to market itself or what its doing as what it isn't. They know exactly what John wick as a franchise is and they deliver exactly what they set out to in spectacular fashion. It's got its fair share of faults for sure, but it has the essentials down to a science and while the faults are there, no one is really trying to argue against them , its just that it gets the right stuff more than than right enough to where overlooking the flaws is hardly an ask for most.

    One thing I really appreciate in the John Wick franchise is the sincerity of these movies no matter how absurd or silly things get. There’s stuff that happens in these movies that, in a Marvel movie, would have characters winking at the audience about how silly and absurd it all is. There would be quips. There would be references. There would be meta, ironic bullshit. Those movies would be dying to let you know about how self aware they are about their premise. Movies that make fun of their own premise are cowardly. It’s not real cinema. Real cinema approaches its premise sincerely and roots itself in it no matter how over the top the premise is. These John Wick movies are obviously aware of how goofy some of its elements are, yet they lean into them anyway like great blockbuster films once used to. Look at Top Gun Maverick. Look at Nolan’s blockbusters. Look at Raimi’s Spider-Man movies. Look at Star Wars, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Titanic, etc all iconic movies that have still remained in the zeitgeist despite being before the 2000s. What is one trait these iconic films all share? They’re incredibly sincere and earnest. They have weight. They have gravitas. They’re not afraid of being criticized. Also, it’s not like those movies are lacking in comedy. It’s just not the kind of comedy which is just cynicism masquerading as self awareness masquerading as wit. That’s the kinda shit you get from modern blockbusters. The John Wick franchise is not like other modern blockbusters.

    I don’t think John Wick is a ‘masculine’ series, it’s just a franchise… I get what you’re saying but the best movies aren’t masculine or feminine they’re just movies. There are plenty of great feminine and masculine characters respectively but there’s also others like the adjudicator in chapter 3 that don’t fit any one characterisation. The great thing about this franchise is it tells a story without any weird agendas which is what I agree with you on. I don’t understand the hyperfixation on it being overtly masculine. Masculinity and femininity are two sides of the same coin, they’re not all that different contrary to what the modern social divide would indicate. If people would stop highlighting them as two opposing forces or classifying one thing as solely masculine or solely feminine then I think things would be a lot better. Like yes John wick as a character is pretty damn macho but that’s not the focus of anything it’s just the way he’s written and acted that came naturally to everyone involved. That’s the important thing, don’t force anything just let it come naturally.

    I totally agree with you. I go to JW movies to see kickass action, not some head scratching plots. All I need is pure entertainment. No movie can please everyone. JW4 is 10/10. It is a jaw dropping movie. I want to watch it on IMAX again. But they only show it on digital only as they are making room for new movies. I hope they will push JW4 back to premium screen later again.

    I absolutely love the on screen connection that fishburne sells with reeves. It is the mentor figure that keeps the talented warrior at bay while selling the "trust me man... This kid can knocks your teeth out... Don't mess with him"... And the joy of letting the warrior free to do. I loved having both mentor figures along in mcshane and fishburne... Because they both sell the same energy about reeves's character... The relaxed energy that something is going to happen when john wick is focused on a goal.

    What an awesome review I could here the joy and passion in your voice, although I haven't seen it yet (reasons!) I know I am gonna love it too. My stand out for your review was when you described that feeling you get when you walk out of the flicks and the oh so welcome cool air hits, It's in that moment your fist clenches your adrenalin is still coursing and you pump the air and exclaim " YEESSS that was fucking insane ! " We don't get enough movies at the moment that can do that. The last time I personally experienced this was after leaving ' Aliens ' that was a Monday evening and I repeated the experience on the Tuesday and Wednesday of that same week ! Great work !.........cheers and Squeak !

    Going to see this, this Saturday. Super psyched for it! 2 and 3 weren't the best in terms of plot or characterization but the action was amazingly well choreographed and on an entirely different level from any other action film ive seen in the past decade. Really loved that this helped bring Keanu back to the forefront in Hollywood. The man still got it! And if what everyone is saying is true JW4 is the best since JW1 so I am all here for it! GGs only indeed!

    I totally agree with your review mc. I'm off to see it again this weekend, it's a film that must be seen on the big screen. I think the underrated stars of this franchise are the colour graders. Along with the cinamatographers they managed to make this franchise look like a graphic novel. Something that really ticked a box for me.

    Cynic, it's great to see you point out films that you enjoy. I know there's a lot to shit on out there. They make it so easy. But it's great when you recommend stuff that you find entertaining. It probably doesn't Bring in the same amount of views, but it's still nice for us to see anyway. Thank you. Yes John Wick four was badass. I really liked the nod to "the Warriors" (1979) of the radio girl giving us the play-by-play. The whole film was like a crazy music video.

    I actually forgot which theater I had picked and just wanted to watch the movie. Turns out it was one of those 4D theaters with shaking seats and oh boy it actually just made me feel every impact a whole lot more. I know it was mostly a gimmick but combined with the explosive finale of John Wick and I everyone was having a great time

    Sad to say this but it's quite visible Keanu is slowing down. There were numerous scenes where you could see the stuntmen slowing their tempo to accommodate him. That having been said, John Wick 4 is absolutely awesome and mad respect for Keanu and for his unabashed dedication.

    I finally saw the first two in 2019 when I was visiting my parents. They couldn't believe I hadn't seen them yet but somehow they had passed me by despite my being an action movie fan. Sure I knew the memes and stuff but I was only nominally aware of them. But either way we watched the first two and then when I got back to my place I went out of my way to see John Wick 3 at the small 2nd run theater before it was out of theaters. Then I bought the BluRays and they have been part of my regular watching experience ever since. Especially the first one. And the Chapter 4 was great as well. Really set an exclamation point for the whole Quadrilogy. Could be the best 4th movie ever. Looking forward to when the fourth is released and I can have a nice long John Wick marathon.

    Keanu had 580 words in the whole movie, and spoke only one full sentence. But the supporting cast was the most insane talent ever. The rich Elite "kid" who is in his mid 30's, of Norwegian royalty, is the creepiest guy ever. And by far the craziest villain I've seen in any movie in history is the big guy with the gold teeth who runs his own rave facility where it appears that all people do is dance and party there all night. That guy's character was so epic in scale that nothing will ever match it.

    For those who are coming back to the comments, or anyone new to this video, does Mr. nobody in this film have any relation to that nobody film that Chad Stahelski also directed? John asked him specifically, if he was a tracker, and that very much sounds like a similar line of work that The nobody film made us understand he did before he went into retirement. I know that he said, he works for a three letter agency, but I have wondered if that line of work was to track rogue assets down and terminate them.
