But Mr. Kotter
I think John being so likable is why some overlooked the heavy plot.
The reason Saturday Night Fever became a hit was because of the music, and Travolta's dancing and charisma. It was a solid film, but really a murky grotesque reality tale of NY otherwise, which was fashionable at the time. The incredible soundtrack which went multiple platinum took that film into the stratosphere.

Still one of the greatest soundtracks of all time! 🙏🏻😂💜
It defined a generation.
John is looking great! Such a cool man😎👍
I was pretty shocked by how bleak and funny it was. Does a great job of showing how wonderful/horrid that whole scene was. “I work a long time on my hair… and ya hit it” May be one of the funniest/saddest lines ever.
Just two of John Travolta's underrated movies Saturday Night Fever and Blowout which arguably are two of his best dramatic roles in his early career.

Blowout is one of those movies that still amazes me in the sense that nobody talks about it. Waaay better than some supposed "classics", I tell you.
It is a really damn good movie. I remember my grandmother got me the VHS of the PG version that was released sometime in the early 2000's she always showed me cool old movies like taxi driver, blues brothers, Saturday Night Fever, then years later I watched the R cut but really still always loved the movie and the true version really is powerful.
You're right it was cleverly ignored...for the joy of dance! John Travolta is in my top ten actors....

Bet Harrison Ford or Tom Hanks is number one on your list! One and two for sure! :P
John is such a good actor and so good in Saturday night fever.... so well said - what a dark movie, however it had hope and realism that we don't see that much any more.
my grandpa told me to watch it cause I love footloose and grease and stuff and I was not expecting how dark the end would be😭
My all time favorite. He so handsome, can dance, act, cool, tall, he is very bless. May God bring love, happiness, grand kids to his life.

I think that Saturday Night Fever is my favorite film too!! I tried to analyse it and I can say that there is so much in it, you can write a whole book about it!! And another book why it is so legendary!! I can't wait to see the director's cut and Staying Alive!! And to buy the 4K version next month!!
I was 18 when Saturday night fever came out. Recently my 5 year old granddaughter found an old picture album with pictures of grandpa and grandma dressed in our disco outfits and I had the Vinny barbarino hairstyle..she couldn't believe it was us lol .now im bald in the middle have a long grey beard and wear bibs all the time.BIG DIFFERENCE lol.
It was a cultural phenomenon. It grossed what would have been a billion dollars in 1977.
0:11 the host is wrong, "Saturday Night Fever" is no longer remembered by the masses as a "family dance-a-thon" movie. The reason the film is so acclaimed over 40 years later is because over time it finally was recognized for what it really is, a dark, brutal slice of Brooklyn life for the main character and those around him.

Maybe he hasn't, but the world has, especially Hollywood. Nowadays everything is sexist, homophobic, and other bs.
He might want to watch Goodfellas if he wants to hear cussing!!! 😂😂😂
John’s lost his hair like me. I saw that film four times in 77/78 at a Romford (Essex) UK cinema no longer there.
To think, I saw SNF & grease, in the theater, during 2nd & 3rd grade, respectively. 😅
My neighbor from downstairs, came over, talked about the language. The rape scene, everything else the film had, my Dad took me the next day
John Travolta has obviously not watched Glengarry Glenn Ross, which has swearing in every sentence - SNF and GGR both are great films, though.

GGR is a great movie, but lets not forget Midnight Run. Maybe THE most F bombs in a film.
He says that he does not know any movie with as much swearing as "Saturday Night Fever" to this day. Has he seen another relatively recent classic: "Goodfellas"? Literally 347 F-bombs dropped.

Goodfellas has the most cursing.
Forget about, where's the beef. Where's the hair?
I look at it as more of a coming of age movie. Travolta’s character was 19 and had no interests other than dancing until he meets this older girl was i think was 24. There are now two versions of it. The r rated is very R. Towards the end of the movie some say the scene in the car in the back seats Donna Pescow gets gang raped.
@gonstotwriter
3 жыл бұрын
The "older girl" was 20. The studio released the R version initially but replaced it with PG due to all the kids who couldn't buy tickets for the R movie.SNF had a very modest budget; JT got the lead because he was very affordable at that time.
"Scarface" might have had a few more bad curse words....

There’s never been more cursing than in Saturday Night Fever???? Ummmm Pulp Fiction? You were literally in that film.
They censored shit and stuff in Saturday night fever and literally ignored that in grease
#JohnTravolta DON'T apologize for the movie's time Era!! This is WHY we can't support "celebrities" who act ashamed for their past anymore... THAT'S WHY we love the classics!!! We want to enjoy & NOT worry that we are "offending" the miniscule percentage of people crying these days, because of the lawlessness we ALL have to tolerate. We loved you FOR YOU, not watching you highly paid (you're welcome) movie stars who actually think us LITTLE PEOPLE look up to. WE DON'T! Just act, sing & jump - that's why we pay your salary! We love you guys, but DAAAMMN. Stop the rhetoric!
In all fairness though for one year SNF did hold the record for the most amount of “fucks” in a film.
Scarface had a lot more cursing for sure

I saw Saturday night fever many times. And just thought it was the American way of life. I didn’t see nothing brutal about it at all.
Jeez he’s acting like such a f-g Johnny just admit those were the good ole days and every girl wanted to be with you and every guy wanted to be like you
Saturday night fevers adult content has never felt right to me even when i watched it as a 10 year old and now that im 18 years old it still doesn’t feel right but now i can see why but i still feel it should have been family friendly
The dark parts of the movie are part of what make the movie amazing. They give THE meaning to the dancing - its an escape from the darkness that stems from ignorance, want, racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. I don't want to watch the cut version, it takes away the real meaning of it all.
