my husband served in the 80's, 82nd AIRBORNE, he still serves and has been home over a year now. This song hurts me to watch his face when he listens to it. I can visualize him, dropped in a foreign country, full of pride and love. Today, eleven of the men he was with are alive, I am humbled to know them. The way he felt about his country then is gone. The victory garden's are gone. The "man" made this one fall.

As a disabled Vietnam veteran, Prine’s song “The Great Compromise” summed it the war and have haunted me since I first heard it. Thank you John!

It took me so long to realize that the girl about whom he sings is America. Of course, I first heard this song as a child. I still loved it without the understanding.

One of the greatest song writers of all time. Maybe the best, I don't know, I'm not intelligent enough to know that. But pheloniusmonk57's comment/translation about this song opened my eyes about the meaning. Brilliant !! Thank you.

Dear Pheloniusmonk57, Thank you so much. I never realized the full meaning of this song. Brilliant !! It makes me appreciate John Prine even more. I didn't know that was possible. Cheers.
