Lyrics:
Sam Stone came home,
To the wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knees.
But the morhpine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold roared through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.
Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it's fun,
There was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill,
For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill.
There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

"There's a hole in Daddy's arm, where all the money goes", probably the most powerful, heartbreaking line in a song I've ever heard, especially after he tells you how "the kids run around wearing other people clothes". God how I miss this truth teller of a man.

Alex Marshall So much appreciation to you for your service, and congratulations for "almost 4 years clean".... That is truly a major victory, especially having the physical issues, too. You deserve to be very proud of yourself, and I so hope you are! One step at a time will become a week, a month, another year. !! "Sam Stone" is hard for so many of us to hear. My son's godfather--a war correspondent in Vietnam--told me recently that he's teaching himself to play it on his guitar. I'm 81 now, in North Carolina, and "Hello in There" is poignant.. But, to me, JP's music & lyrics make every song a unique treasure.

Donnie, it's about a guy come home from Vietnam with trama and that's how he delt with it. Took too long to figure out what P.T.S.D was.
I see why Dylan liked him so much. And the delivery, so honest and sincere.
England has John Keats. America has John Prine. A world without poetry is not a world I want to live in. F-U Covid-19, you took one of the best we had.
I first heard John Prine on a PBS special in December of 1982. I went to the record store the next day and bought Prime Prine. I brought it home, put it on the turntable, plugged in my earphones, sat in a chair and closed my eyes. When Sam Stone came on, I began to cry. I was 19. And I wept like I'd never wept before. I'm listening to this song on the night John died. I'm staying up all night listening to his music. I'm drinking beer and I thought I'd be crying into it. But I'm not. I am heartened by a quote of John's I saw on Twitter tonight. He says: "I guess I just process death differently than some folks. Realizing you’re not going to see that person again is always the most difficult part about it. But that feeling settles, and then you are glad you had that person in your life." No, I'm not crying tonight. I am grateful. I'm glad John hung around long enough to share his music with a whole new generation. And I'm happy he no longer has to suffer.

@@denniswise1200 You are wrong! Draft cards were still issued to us in 1974. No one was actually drafted into the U.S. Army that year but it certainly was possible. I feared tricky Dick Nixon would reinstate the draft and re-ignite the war. So I worked hard to be re-classified by my local draft board from 1A status to 4G, "Surviving son of a deceased veteran ineligible for service during peacetime", since all our international conflicts are "conflicts", not "wars" officially declared by Congress. I hoped my new status would keep me from dying via Nixon's fiat. And, my draft number was 41 or 43: too high not to worry. An artist endowd with the unique gift of looking accurately into human condition and phrasing what he saw into simple words than are worth books of wisdom.
The human race has just lost a great artist. Let us mourn. This unique talent can never be replaced. Goodbye and thanks for everything John.

such a touching song. My grandpa was in WW2 in the Pacific Theater, my dad in the Korean war. I had a neighbor on my street that came from the Vietnam war. I was only maybe 8 years old when I saw my neighbor, Vietnam vet take a hatchet to his motorcycle and fought it in the driveway like it was the enemy. Something I will never forget.
There is just so much B.S. in the U.S. that guys like John represented what is good about America : Honesty / Reliability / Integrity / Virtue / Fair-Mindedness...the list goes on and on. (I lived in Vancouver in '74 and a buddy from Vermont who was a Vietnam Veteran introduced me to this American Ditty.) (And sang it 18 hours of the day!)
John Prine... America's poet Emiritus forever.............
Thank you John.

My husband was a Vietnam Veteran, who turned me onto John Prine.
I have always like his music
Always brings me to tears.
I'm a compulsive gambler in recovery and I can completely identify with this song, Thank You John, sleep now my friend, RIP
I'm a 61 year old " hippie".. raised my kids and adopted a few from other people who loved babies, but, couldn't handle "kids".. and now I have a wonderful group of grandchildren..all raised listening to "Sam Stone" under fully understanding the song. Don't forget..there are STILL confirmed sightings of Americans belong held in Viet Nam. Peace.
John Prine was BRILLIANT
John prince" climbing walls while sitting in the chair greatest line"saddest song to me and I'm lonesome hank Williams
Unbelievable song and unbelievable hair on that host.
He is so young here and so shy he can't lift his head. He was still at the stage where he was surprised by all the attention. He was one of the greatest story tellers ever. He had a knack of writing about his experiences and life that was so very simple, so very relatable, that you understood the lyrics without having to decode them. They say that a picture paints a thousand words. Well, "There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes" are 11 words that paint a picture that speaks volumes. RIP John. My consolation is that you get to play with Steve again.

He was a brilliant wordsmith and poet...comparable to Mark Twain....he got his messages across in ingenious ways and often with humor....
Unfortunately I lived this song word to word note to note, when I finally decided to give up smack and get on a methadone program in some of my groups I'd play this song, cause it told my story as well as I could, I hope it helped someone to not get themselves to the situation ole Sam found hisself in at the end of this song...!!!

This was a song a fellow prisoner used to sing. I never heard of John Prine until then. Fantastic songwriter. God rest his soul. F*** the coronavirus
I love his way with words " sweet songs never last too long on broken radios" that is sam stone. A good man that had been broken. We need to treat vets with the utmost care quickly, and in general. mental health( unresolved pain) for what it is.ptsd is multi faceted. It takes all of us to understand.

Been fighting my addiction for a couple of years, and I am asking myself how I have never heard this song.
John Prine is a National Treasure.
My wife died Dec 12th 23 in our bedroom in my arms. My girl introduced me to John Prine and since I lost my love I fine myself seeking out his and Merle Hagard songs as her and I both played and sang many evenings under the veranda with smiles on our mouths and love for each other in our hearts and souls....God knows I miss her with everything I am.

I had the privilege of seeing John play in a bar in Lexington Ky in the 1970's or 80's, not sure. I will never forget it. He was one of a kind.
Wow. I guess I've gotten used to John's more recent videos where he exudes confidence. I would call the John Prine here almost painfully shy. What a progression he made over the course of his long amazing career.
Just heard he's seriously ill due to Covid-19 and thought of this song. Thanks again, John Prine, for your music.

Steve and Doug..thinking of you, listening to John Prine.
As one who refused induction into the Vietnam War in 1969, I am in tears right now as I play this song. I became a Prine fan in 1971.
Thought you would somehow by a miracle over come the Corona virus, was praying hard. You and your songs have been a big part of my life from the very first time I heard Angel from Montgomery and Sam Stone. Saw you a few years back and so glad I did. RIP John, you left your mark on this planet.
No words.
This song is deep. Describes so many casualties of war. R.I.P. mr. Prine.

I am lucky enough to have adored John Prine for a long time. Sam Stone is one of the saddest and truest songs ever. But a lot of his other songs contain humor and pathos, he was an artist.
Unbelievable song writer! So sad that he's gone. You will be missed John. RIP😪
A masterpiece.
How on earth has it been 4 years?? I've always been a huge Deadhead, I saw them 178 times, it hit me hard when we lost Jerry, but it was 100x worse when we lost John. I didn't know John, but he certainly knew me.
Damn, what an American original.
For me, there are two songs here: The one I heard the first time, and thought was brilliant, and showed me a world I'd never known. The second one was what this turned into after my friend Axel died of a heroin overdose. That's a completely different song. Can't hear the first one anymore.
