Caitlyn S he's humble to the point that he can't seem to handle appraisal tho and that makes me a bit sad. Of course the staff all together does all the work but he delivers it perfectly and that's important too. But I've watched some interviews with him and he's always like that. He doesn't think he's that great.

he has earned a spot up there with Colbert and Stewart, hands down

How honest and humble John Oliver is in this interview regarding himself, his wife and especially Jon Stewart makes him so much more likable. I didn't think that was possible.

@Angelo I agree. He’s proven himself the most principled. Colbert was the most talented entertainer of the offspring-he was even outshining Jon for awhile I think-but he pretty much gave up any interesting political analysis after leaving the Colbert Report.

Charlie Rose asked a very insightful question, and John gave a very insightful answer: "Ideally satire would not do anything better than anyone." But then the co-host cut him off and changed the subject. I think that's something that should be discussed more often. I've heard Jon Stewart express similar sentiments. Unfortunately, the people whose primary objective is to make people laugh are giving Americans more fair and balanced information than the entities whose primary objective is to report the facts.

dovregubben78 John is always deflecting the importance of his show. I believe this is his character trait for everything he does. Of course, studies ave been done that conclude that the use of humor helps people to learn quicker and keep the information that they learn-- so any sort of humor used to convey important world topics (done well) will always fit the bill. It's not for John Oliver to pronounce satire as being somehow a 'less than' great avenue for news.

AverageO An introvert is someone that prefers meaningful conversation, not shallow talk. An introvert is gets tired easily by being around people while expressives thrive and "gain" from it. The stage is when he feels alone and doing his job or a sense of purpose. The interview is the exact opposite, being around people, etc. I am very aware of what an introvert is and when to use it as I've read plenty into it. Johnny Carson is an example of one of the stage acts that was an introvert.

I don't know why, but this interview dynamic and these people make my skin crawl. Except for John Oliver, of course.

It's simple, the mass media moguls are being threatened by someone that has an alternative view to news. Most media giants like fox, msnbc keep the public misinformed. You can tell that they were of the opinion that Snowden was a traitor not a hero . She points out how Snowden is "devastating" and " upset" . And seriously, when she says " are you lazy people?" It's like the cbs reporters don't know how to stop the attacks, as if it's hard wired within them. All of them except Oliver want to use the media as a weapon of Mass DISTRACTion. DISTRACTion from the real news, news that TRIES it's best to not be biased . News does not takes sides, It just is.John Stewart and Oliver take an innocent take on the truth through comedy. This allows them to play the "I'm a comedian, they're just jokes . This is not real news (don't come after me)" card. But wait... By that rhetoric then Fox News can play the "Fox News is not comedy, it's real news" card. Truth in "comedy" and Comedy in fox truth

"Are you lazy people?" Cute, but it should be obvious that Oliver and his team put way more work into their specials with writing letters to get interviews, researching and writing about one subject for a segment the length of Stewart's whole show, and of course actually interviewing some of the people he does for these specials. Jon Stewart is great, and I love his show 4 times a week, but I wouldn't ever vote for Oliver to sacrifice the intense quality of that one hour for more shows. If I had to choose one, I would probably choose Stewart, but being able to have two, I love the formula Oliver has, and think that they really developed something beautiful. UsirRaMaroon It wasn't a very good joke. She isn't funny and doesn't have a funny delivery. It may not have even been a joke either, I think she was trying to ask why last week tonight only does one episode a week while the daily show is, well, daily. But the question didn't form up well so she went with, "are you people lazy?" The daily show has the segments that are developed over a week or two and then the monologue part where they cover the media, covering the news. Last week tonight is all in depth report.

UsirRaMaroon As Todd said, if it was a joke, the delivery didn't measure up. Disregarding that, though... you seem to be dumping a lot of energy into this, brotha. I don't think its a super big deal. On that note, you should check out the song "Dark Comedy Morning Show" by Open Mike Eagle. I feel like it is somehow relevant, but Im intoxicated enough that I can't reasonably pin it down (not sarcasm, Im a little wasted, honestly). Cheers!

I aspire to be as unassuming as John Oliver; clever, incisive, "with it", but yet not bigging himself up, realising that he is a small pawn in a big game and that he doesn't want to be idolized, and enough confidence to know what he's capable of without having an inflated ego. He's made the transition from small British comedian to one of the most disruptive faces in US media in just a few years and I can't wait to see what's next

Man this was rough, it felt like they had him on the show just to interrogate him like he was in trouble for informing the people better than them. The salt is real, but he did made them loosen up in the end.

jakovasour because they are professionals at controlling their body language on screen.however you should still be able to sense the pressure they was applying to john on that show with questions like "what is the intent with this dumb show?", "walk us through the snoden thing, what were you trying to accomplish?" and that dangerous question near the end asking "should one be forgiven for past mistakes?" If you think about that last one and why he didn't give a straight answer, you realize if he had said no and some past shit comes up about him that makes him look bad, his own words would hang him. If he said yeah, then later condemn a political figure cbs supports whose past horrible actions like say being a sex offender, this very conversation would have come back to bite him in the ass. The only reason they was smiling and laughing was because he delivered well placed small jokes every time they fired questions at him in the beginning to get them distracted and loosen up which worked because by the end, they were laughing with him and interviewing him with a better lighter atmosphere.

"what is the intent with this dumb show?" He's quoting something john said himself only seconds before, there is even like a minute straight when john and charlie talk about how much they like each other. You're seeing something that's not there.

That situation in that video could honestly be viewed either way hence is why I didn't just flat said you was wrong and said you had some disorder like you did to me. You can sit there and scream "NO! YOUR WRONG, YOU MENTAL?! GTFO" all the fuck you want to but that does not mean your view is the only correct one. Now you may watch that clip and think nothing is wrong which fine, but for me and apparently others who agree from watching that clip, the conversation between the people in it seemed way too awkward and john was under rapid fire questions. My point here is in the beginning, it was not a friendly atmosphere for the interviewee until the end where oliver told enough jokes to change that. tl;dr : read my fucking post. all of it. Cause I am getting the feeling you are selective reading

Couldn't be happier that he got his own show. He killed it on the Daily Show when he took over for Stewart while he was away. Those are some big shoes to fill, and he made it happen.

@@EpicBunty Well, a year later, but he means in an ideal world there wouldn't have to be a better way to make points like that as either those points will have naturally been made known or that all methods of making those points are equal. And for him having no idea, that's a genuine thought as it is up to the individual receiving the information to determine the better method.

John Oliver, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and everyone who works for you all: you are exactly what this country needs. How the media frames important social crises is downright deplorable. It is clear that these interviews were terrified of what he might say since they kept interrupting him and abruptly changing topics. They literally laughed when he blatantly made fun of them and their absurd questions.

John Oliver is far more intelligent than he lets on, and far more so than these other people at least as far as I can tell. I love how they gloss over his obvious mockery of what they do as just a funny joke. xD There are not enough people on TV who discuss real issues in an intelligent informative and humorous manner.

John Oliver is so... - Genuine - Insanely QUICK - witted - Intelligent & Emotionally Intelligent What a perfect talk show host!

John Oliver, a comedian, is a better journalist than actual journalists.

John Oliver IS amazing. That said, this interview broke my heart the tiniest bit. Oliver hit a nerve if empathy with me ever since the April Fools' bit where he had a line about "you're laughing on the outside but you're sad inside. In which case welcome to my brain" I'm no John Oliver by any means but I do love performing and I often joke about my own for lack of a better word "issues." That's not saying Oliver himself actually has any. I don't know obviously. But I analyse without even meaning to and I feel like, no I KNOW I'm still high on panic after Robin Williams suicide. I don't know, I'm rambling I guess but I get what he says about not even being comfortable with himself and hmmm I just hope he's able to acknowledge what a gift he is. Sounds cliché but, I guess to put it better I hope he's alright when the cameras aren't rolling. Because as I began with John Oliver IS amazing.

Without wishing to speak too broadly, self deprecation is kind of an intrinsic facet of British culture and humour. I imagine that side of John is just exemplified in an American context, especially as he is being showered with praise. He will never admit what a gift he is but that doesn't mean he's not happy.

Belle Gold The way I take that quote is essentially "You're going to find it hilarious how awful this is, but at the same time it's sad that this is the world we live in". I'm generally a very happy, lighthearted person. I find humor in almost everything. Still, while I laugh at ignorance, I'm saddened by the results of it.

I wish they would let him finish talking.

I love how John Oliver treats Jon Stewart like an Actual Mentor, and not the kind where you see on Tv, I mean the kind that you owe your life too.

He really has to stop putting himself down so much. Being humble is good, but he sometimes really is overdoing it. MrRobertSama I've been to Britain a few times and the people are amazing there. The self-deprecating habit is real, but I think deep down they know what incredible people most of them are. They honestly remind me of the rural parts of the southern U.S., where the people are humble, kind, polite, warm, and friendly. It doesn't hurt that I could listen to that awesome accent for years without tiring of it. Back to watching BBCA.

MrRobertSama english eople are great and i say that as a german. my first experience was a tad scary though becasue i couldn'T tell their (the people i met during an evening) hostile behaviour was jokingly. had a fun night after everyone started laughing when i looked really uncomfortable. but i stand by this: british food should be named right after atomic, biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction O:)

John really under plays the effort and the message his show has on the audience. He's amazing. And yes Jon Stewart is the greatest

I would honestly LOVE five days a week of John Oliver and his staff... I spend all my time trying to find old videos I haven't seen yet. I hope it's just a bit when he talks about "not being a fan of himself" because he's my favorite human being ever and he should know how much everyone loves him.

I love John Oliver, and his show is pure entertainment gold. He's like the drunken love-child of Edward R. Murrow and Cid Ceasar.

Bill O'Rilley must be turning green with envy that John Oliver is getting a Peabody Award! Anyone else remember O'Rilley claiming he received 2 Peabody Awards while on Inside Edition, and ultimately being forced to admit it was actually a Polk Award (as if anyone knows what that is)and Senator Al Franken called him out about it on CSPAN2?

They should stay once a week. I like the amount of detail they put into a topic.

John Oliver is SO humble and modest. Such an amazing guy. Seen him live and love him to death for what he does and how he does it. The hosts ask some leading questions, somewhat provoking, but John handles it with class, just like he does everything, gotta love him

Its much easier to make Americans laugh than the Brits. John Oliver has been doing shows in the UK for a while and never received this kind of recognition but in America it seems that with a little bit of wit and seemingly clever jokes you can own the place. Good for him.

+KingQuraish yes, but also it's the dissonance of comedy with his British accent, which evokes a regal sense in American audiences. It substantiates serious subject matter, which is then compared to something petty or commonplace to humorous effect, both for the juxtaposition and that dissonance. Brits would not find him funny on his accent alone, while his accent gets him a leg up in the US. On the flip side, I find Brits easily charmed by Black-American guests on the Graham Norton show, and I think it also has to do with AAVE.

Benjamin Rujopakarn good point yes but African american comedians are received similarly across the world...I dont think a white american host would do the same in england as John is doing across the ocean. Brits are harder to make laugh because they're more pessimists and introvert and you can see this in the culture in Britain.

Hands down, best journalist of our generation and he has barley completed his second season. This dude has done more in one episode than his interviewers have done with their whole careers haha.

I love how much these journalists seem to admire John for his work :)

Impressive how they interrupted him thru the whole f-ing interview. So much ego from their part, let the man speak!!!

John manages the atmosphere on an entirely different level. These reporters look like they are embarrassed to just be in his presence.

I'm glad I got the privilege to see this star rising for years on Jon Stewart's show. Just like Colbert, he took what he learned and did a great twist. 1 show a week, but that 1 show has been phenomenal every time I see it. Not having to rush through the 24 hour news cycle and taking their time, this show has put me in tears from laughing too much.

One thing you notice about these segments where John Oliver goes to guest on is how he blows the host(s) out of the water in eloquence and humor on their own home turf. He credits his writing staff consistently but I think it's fairly clear that he's one of the main reasons for the show's success.

I have to disagree with John Oliver on one thing. While it may be a correct generalization about computer experts not having the greatest interpersonal skills Edward Snowden is not the best example of this generalization. I, for one, think that Snowden is an exception and seems to have great interpersonal skills and able to connect with anyone who interviews him and he is able to chew and break down most complex technical concepts down to an average person's level of understanding. I feel like dickpics segment simply broke down what should already be understood or at least comprehended by an average person down to an idiot level.

jivinivanhotmailcom I agree with you, though I think Oliver misrepresented his own opinion, which is that Snowden is an intellectual who basically discusses the issue at too high a level. Basically, Snowden is not a bad communicator, he's just not dumbing it down enough. Or at least that seemed to be what Oliver himself believed from the interview from his insistence on bringing everything back to the dick-pic scenario rather than discussing abstracts.

*****: Yes, agreed. It's easy for those of us who are in the know to think that at least a majority of the civilised world should know these things at the level to which Edward Snowden actually does dumb it down when communicating it. However, as John Oliver states in the interview (if my recollection is not completely erroneous), the average person _doesn't_ comprehend or at least not care (that's the word he emphasised) unless it's dumbed down and you use an example that hits closer to home (i.e. "Say wut? Some creep at NSA can track my dick pics? Ermahgerd!") So to summarise I agree with both of you. Snowden is an excellent and sympathetic communicator, but I agree with Mr. Oliver (and perman07, I'm sure) that if he managed to communicate his message more effectively to a majority of the population, opinions on him and his legacy might swing.

jivinivanhotmailcom You're right. It should already be understood by the average person. As time goes by, it seems my biased opinion of the average person is reaching near-idiotic levels. I thought the dick pic bit was hilarious, but I found myself wanting a little more out of that interview.

I wish we had someone like John Oliver, and a show like his - with his brilliant production team - here in Brasil. Cause he talks about serious matters, and tries to give all the sides to everything, and make us think about important matters. We need that in Brasil, for our problems... Someone 'teaching' people to be more critical and make more questions...

"What are you buying the royal babyyyyy?" Oliver: "I don't care, I don't care about the royal baby." LOL

+DoctorWhoFanBadWolf I think John's Stache is a rebel. Even when he does shave for his show you can still see it's more prominent, I don't think he's actively trying to grow one, this is just what happens when he doesn't shave. It just wants to be free!

Loving how John still has vestiges of the Midlands accent - "Toime" ("Time") is a great example!

Great job CBS, having a segment on Last Week Tonight as a way out to just show scenes from the show for over 2 minutes.

I can't even handle oliver right now. He is the fucking king of everything and he do not even seem to notice it!

Herman Langland He's being honest with the work done on his show. Because it's not "his" show per se. He realizes entirely that it's the combination of all the writers and people that go out and research these topics that are to receive the praise.

+Henry Cheng Personally, I prefer him on HBO, mainly because each week he gives a lot of times looking in depth at an important issue, whereas on the Daily Show, while they still do look at these issues, are much shorter. Also, I never was a fan of the constant guest appearances, I found the parts where he discusses what happened during the week much more entertaining.

Alex Speckman Exactly. Unless it is a relevant political guest, I always stop watching the daily show before the interview starts. Most of the time it's waste of time celebrity guest that is promoting a stupid movie or book. I noticed, during Jon Stewart final years, the guests were more political than entertainment.

John has full creative control on Last Week Tonight. There's no way in hell he's ever leaving HBO.

Stewart, Colbert, and Oliver are all "brillent" *LOL!* for what each one does and they each have a distinctive signature. I happen to like John's show best. I've seen some great segments by Stewart and Colbert, but I never binge watched all their clips on YT within a few days of discovering them the way I have with John. I never created a YT playlist for them, but I've got 45+ vids in a "Best of" Last Week Tonight playlist! I've played some segments in the background over and over b/c they are so shocking, informative, and funny. My housemate listens to recorded eps of Amy Goodman on Democracy Now. She never misses an ep. I've said a couple of times that if I was Amy Goodman I'd have blown my brains out by now. *That's* how depressing her show is. But John deals w/ the most serious and complex issues,- things like nuclear weapons and genocide!- and I just want to see more. In our society where our choices are the pablum of corporate news, celebrity worship, hate radio & propaganda TV, and the only in-depth reporting being Democracy Now,- a program that leaves me feeling either frustrated or bored & apathetic,- I see John as the ONLY way the American public will learn about what's happening in other countries like India, South American countries, New Zealand, etc., and the only way they are going to get well-researched, in-depth IMPORTANT information for being ACTIVE citizens. I see Jon Stewart as the comedic evening news, while Oliver is the comedic 60 Minutes.

What makes his format so successful at tackling complex issues is the generous time allotment of 18 minutes.

man you can see the anxiety brewing up in him when the lady darkened the room with the Ferguson topic, but he did the smart thing and simply explained how dangerous it would be for a comedian to try to improvise comedy on a touchy subject

You can’t do the show every day ladies because John needs to be more than just literate for each show.

Ok so I didn't want to say anything about this besides how awesome he is for his self deprecating humor which is very British and speaks to me personally, but then I read some of the comments and the back and forth war of people saying that the interviewers were grilling him and being jerks and that he was being subtly insulting back to them. So after reading those comments I watched the video 2 more times and I've got to say I just don't see it. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and I am perfectly willing to be proven wrong. Here is my 2 cents. I think this was a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. I didn't think there was any intended hostility on either side. I think he was very funny and charming throughout and he had them all laughing but I think the problem was that there wasn't enough structure to the interview so people interrupted or talked over each other. Some of the questions asked were a bit vague or stupid for sure. It is also possible that one or two of the interviewers got annoyed at the fact that he had to give humorous answers for every question before getting to the heart of what they were asking. Part of that was the fact that they were giving him a lot of compliments which he felt were undeserved and made him a little uncomfortable. Other than that I thought there was general respect and curiosity shown in this interview. They asked him questions that amounted to "how do you do what you do? How do you make serious issues funny? are you trying to educate along with entertain?" He deflected a few of those questions but I think they came out of general respect and curiosity as I said. And at the end of the day I think he represented himself in a way that would bring more viewers to his show and he also showed tremendous respect and loyalty to his mentors Stewart and Colbert. So to sum up: I think this was a pretty decent interview in spite of the participant and I think any perceived hostility on either side is number 1 giving them too much credit and 2 reading in to things based on how you feel about the interviewers and the topics they discussed.

Why I love this guy? "Well, it's not just me. I am the unfortunate face of a lot of people's work. (...) I just get the credit for a lot of people's work."

Love the Jon Stewart love & loyalty. Huge John Oliver fan, glad to see him find the success he has.

There is absolutely nothing that humor can't be found in. Human life is the epitome of a joke.

Personally, I prefer him to John Stewart, especially recently. Half of Stewart's jokes are silly accents, puns and not particularly insightful observations, mixed in with so much personal political bias (not that I disagree with him often) that it's become somewhat unbearable. John Oliver actually explores topics, far less of his jokes seem like easy 'cheap shots'.

***** Actually, for me it's felt like Jon Stewart has been on fire recently with many topics. He's become more and more bold, and started contextualizing a lot of his views on race relations, the Middle East, income inequality, etc. as if since he's only got a few more weeks left, he's not worried about saying the wrong thing.

Inconspicuous Bear Wrestler To some extent that's part of the problem. Like I said, I'm not pre-disposed to disagreeing with Jon Stewart's stances on things (most of the time, anyway) but even I will admit he is very, very bias and partisan on some issues. To the extent that his commentary feels more like a irritating oversimplification than a thought-provoking jab at the heart of the issue. He's the kind of person where it feels like once he's gained a certain mode of thinking about the world, there's only a limited number of interpretations of issues he's willing to consider. Which I find annoying. The IRS thing on John Oliver was actually quite a good example. Jon Stewart would've cracked a joke about how the IRS is irritating and incompetent while Jon Oliver makes the much more valuable observation that you need them anyway. It's partly down to the format, true, but nonetheless Jon Stewart only ever says something non-mainstream when it fits into his political leanings.

Jon Stewart proves that there is enough room at the top for every one to eat. Oliver, Colbert, Noah, Bee. Stewart is the greatest

Wow how do they not see the difference between last week tonight and the daily show? They couldn't possibly do it 5 nights a week because its more broadcast journalism that takes time to get the story. That's the difference and that's what makes it great.

Funny that at this table John Oliver is the one who *isn't a clown.

Keep it once a week, quality over quantity =)

John Oliver is very good a exemplifying humility and self-deprecating acerbic wit.

All the awkward laughter made me feel uncomfortable.
