HBO is not just cable, fyi. it's "by subscription" (meaning an extra charge on top of paying for basic cable ... and on top of extended cable) so Oliver's show on HBO allows swear words. Brummy means someone from Birmingham, which has a distinct accent. Bond is, or at least projects the image of being, a prototypical posh Londoner in accent and manner. So to the English, a Brummy (think like Ozzy Osborne) portraying the suave James Bond is kind of funny.

leadfoot9x amusingly, it's less the British that have a problem with hugs (though there is frequently the joke of the manly hug, two pats only). The Irish, on the other hand, barely even touch each other - they're far less tactile. As a rule though, many British have a problem with expressing emotion in obvious ways, and hugging is the easiest joke to make out of it.

I was looking at my screen, like, "oh, let'em know, son" I feel like him and Trevor Noah are the only people who are saying things in an appropriate way, these days... It's cool to goof off, have a little laugh now and then, but I think it's important to sneak in some real shit like that, even just to remind people that the subject matter is real life, and that shit ain't no joke right now...

Sandy G 323 I would say it is comparable actually. It's a very hard process for translators to even get to the US. If you watch John Oliver's report even though some of those translators had visas they couldn't come over. Or they couldn't get visas. So while nowthere are issues getting into the US once you've gotten to the airport I wouldn't say it any easier or harder to actually immigrate. Because the original process is still the same.

Yes John, India was most definitely our most recent unfinest hour.

anonymous bosh well, after World War I Britain and France carved up the middle east and formed all of the modern countries we know of today. Britain was instrumental in suppressing the development of the region and started the tradition of Western powers installing oppressive dictatorships in order to keep the populace in check. Any destabilization that has occurred in the Middle East can be traced directly back to the British Empire as a matter of fact.

No, but that was russia during the cold war, which probably wouldn't have happened had world war two not occurred which would not have occurred without world war one which was directly correlated with a shaky system of alliances in europe most of which dated back to the middle ages and of which great britain was intimately involved, it's not great britain's fault that the butterfly effect exists. (the butterfly effect states that the world is so unpredictable that a butterfly flapping its wings on one side of the US could theoretically cause a chain reaction that results in a tornado on the other side, the processes involved on anything on a large scale are so complex you can't predict them fully and everything is interconnected.)

And the Brits were the only ones who had an empire, never happened before. Just kidding, Muslim, Persian, Roman, Congo, Mughal, Gupta, Chinese Qin, to name but a few, all preceded the British empire - which was the widest due to the British merchant marine and Navy. Colonisation? True, North America was colonised by the Brits and others. Warring between the Indian nations over territory was constant, but they weren't as technically sophisticated, or numerous, as the Europeans. South and Central America was colonised by the Iberians. The Middle East and North Africa was colonised by the Muslims (Arabs). With respect to India, at the height of the British Raj, the number of Brits as a percentage of the Indian population, was far less than one tenth of one percent. Whereas those of sub-continent background in Britain today are many thousands of times greater, as a percentage of population. Who has colonised who?

Are you honestly comparing brutally invading a country, influencing its politics, replacing potential leaders, slaughtering part of the population, changing the every day life of its entire people, and other things that the British Empire inflicted upon India, with the normal cultural and ethnical mixing, due to normal immigration from the former colonies, of British society today ? You're seeing this in terms of sheer numbers. But the fact of the matter is, the Indians living in England didn't invade anyone. They didn't arrive thinking they were a superior race. They didn't force anything upon the people already living in that area.

Nope. I read their book (in their defense, most of them haven't). Jesus doesn't come back and make everything better. The second coming is the sign of the end times, during which lucifer falls from heaven with 30% of the stars (metaphor for angels? But I thought Lucifer was the devil, but apparently he's not yet, but he's going to be? whatever...), then they fight a big fucking war, in which all the good people are harvested so their souls can be turned into war cannon-fodder in "the Rapture." Then, near as I can figure, the entire planet (along with all remaining life) is cleansed by fire and giant bizarro-monsters. They don't plan to make it quick. ... honestly, given a choice between that and Ragnarok, I'll take Ragnarok. At least in Ragnarok it sounds like I get to be armed.

I am re-watching this here in mid 2020. I am astounded by how, when I first heard this in 2017, we could never have imagined how the situation in American politics and the global COVID situation would have developed. Alas, how naive we were. I have continued to follow Colbert and John Oliver in their quarantine-time produced shows, and I really appreciate them, but it is fun to see an old show where we can feel the energy and vibe between the host and their audience. Best wishes to all.
