Correlation is not causation but it is noticeable that most of the countries regularly ranked highest for happiness, freedom, democracy etc are constitutional monarchies. Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands plus of course New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK. Having a figurehead head of state separate from politics may well result in a greater willingness to demand more from the politicians. In countries like the USA the President is revered and there is a tendency to view criticism of the POTUS and criticism of the country. In a constitutional monarchy we can freely criticise our political leaders without that worry. The USA has an elected President/head of state. The UK has a powerless King but has universal healthcare, gun control, the right to abortion, birth control, gay marriage etc. Given the choice I'm happy I live in the UK.
@ILuvAyeAye
4 ай бұрын
@@karlbassett8485 As you say, correlation does not equal causation, because I would assume the main cause of what you're describing is that nations with constitutional monarchies tend to be very old, and have generations of stealing other nation's wealth to create stability. That absolutely includes the US, which does not have healthcare etc., I certainly wish we did. But I think there are more pertinent differences between the US and the other nations you list than it not being a constitutional monarchy, such as the US's huge population and the population's diversity, financial and otherwise. It's hard to get the US to agree to much of anything, largely because of our culture's focus on individualism which I'm not a huge fan of, but I also think it's worth remembering how many people are in the US compared to those other countries. 331 million people cannot really compare to the other countries on your list.

That didn't click to me at first but thanks for this; it's a shame practically everything leading to the rehab and out messed Mulaney up and I haven't been back to following him since. Seems likely American comedians' shelf lives are getting shorter and shorter.
John's lightning-quick switch from full-on laughter to sarcastic somberness at 2:50 is a sight to behold :D
Seth and John live election coverage would be amazing! Maybe bring in an up and coming act too. Can see that format working amazingly

Until it becomes a day drinking with John Oliver segment when they gotta bring out the bottle after they tell us “hey guys everything’s fucked!!!”
Wow. Not a MBE, but they actually gave him an OBE, even knowing the body of his work. They basically dared him not to turn it down. Also glad to see John made back alive after the cartel business from the last time he was on.

Why is an OBE not desirable? From context clues, I’m assuming it’s because it somehow endorses the class system. But I thought this was largely ceremonial, like getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom here in the US. Now I’m wondering if being knighted has the same connotations as the OBE.

@@goawaytours Thanks. I didn’t realize until this segment that this award was anything but highly coveted, especially since whenever we hear of it being presented it’s always reported about in such a positive manner. And this is the first I’ve heard of anyone turning it down. Although, as he said there’s probably many people who just don’t mention it as requested.
"That's not a joke. That's just a fact with kind of a dickish inflection" is genius.

Similarly, the public broadcaster in Canada, " Coming up on The National, the latest on the Queen's passing" The latest? Is she not still dead? This isn't a developing story! The RELENTLESS "tragedy porn," the INSISTENCE that everyone in the Commonwealth IS personally devastated by the death of a person they never met, the swift and vociferous outrage if one declines to pretend to be rendered incapable of functioning for being bereft, is a bizarre form of propaganda. The emboldened and chest-puffing imperialism, unilaterally reported as "jolly good, as it should be, wonderful, very impressive" is both regressive and frightening.

If you read obituaries they often say "So and so will be resting at such and such Funeral Home". It's just a term to help grieving family and close friends. Same as saying "visitation hours will be held ....." Noone goes to visit a body but that's what it's called. ✌
Well, this is a delightful way to begin the day😃☀️

I can just FEEL all of the Americans looking at eachother like "are we allowed to laugh at that?" constantly throughout this. Speaking as a subject of the Crown, yes. Laugh. Please.
John Oliver makes me laugh so much! He's a viola playing Cambridge graduate who has settled in the colonies and he's criticizing the class system 🤣🤣
Seriously such a treat when you two are together. It is simply “Seth / John hang out. Oh, there’s an audience”. Two great hosts who understand the power of people and engaging with their audience …. Hang on… Day drinking with John Oliver … … Make it so, pleeeeease
I adore John Oliver so much. Actors and comedians often say how they don't care for the attention, but I think John Oliver is genuine about it. He's so good at what he does, and so funny. I feel he reluctantly takes the fame and recognition that comes with it.

John Oliver is so so funny! Razor sharp wit. Makes me laugh even when I feel I shouldn't.
The best thing to happen to American Late Night shows is John Oliver. Why you ask? It's that humour from a British person is far more digestible when it comes to real news topics. There is a natural cynicism mixed with self-deprecation, and a necessary, albeit, blunt delivery from Brits that American humorists don't have. They don't need to be loved like American hosts. They will tell you the truth regardless. They can go from funny to serious on a penny (or dime) and not lose pace or attention with the audience. Love from Australia, John! 🇦🇺

John Oliver is hilarious, but as I have heard him say on more than one occasion, the other late night hosts have to hit the ground running on Mondays, coming up with multiple segments and interviews several days a week, and sometimes, they have to change something practically last minute. That does make a difference. I think it would be fun if John and Seth switched, with John doing one of the nights ACL is on and Seth doing one of John’s shows. Then, they could do a short meet up on one of Seth’s shows and spend some time laughing about the experience.
