I have always loved how immigrants have so much passion for being part of this country. It is literally what makes America what it is.

I'm glad these guys talked about how difficult it was to gain a green card & citizenship for the USA. It took my BFF's Mom 20 years & $20,000, to get her citizenship for the USA. She was 66 when she first arrived in this country. Her 3 daughters were already here, had USA citizenship, & were going to take care of her financially.

I cannot believe she went through all of that with her daughters already here. Wow. I never realized the potential cost of a family member trying to come to America to be with their loved ones ~

@@jeanneganrude8549 Yep. And she never worked while here so, she never got Medicare or Social Security. She never got any governmental assistance, at all. Her Daughters took turns having her live with them. Thankfully she was a healthy Woman because they paid out of pocket for all her medical, dental, & vision costs. When my Grandmother came to this country in the early 1900s, her soon-to-be Husband had to show immigration that he had $1000 in cash, to sponsor her or they would have turned her away at Ellis Island. If the latter happened, she would have had to come up with the money to pay for steerage passage, on a ship, back to Europe. It took her 1 year to earn enough money to come here, in the first place.

How long ago was that? We're about to do the same thing for my wife's mom, but I find it difficult to understand how it came out to $20k unless they hired a ridiculously expensive immigration lawyer. We hired an immigration lawyer for my wife for her Permanent Residency process and I believe that was about $5k + government form fees. We did her Citizenship paperwork ourselves after reviewing the PR paperwork and it wasn't too bad at all. The fees were maybe $2k or a little less. Her mom's paperwork should be just under the $2k mark, again. If you don't understand how the paperwork is supposed to be filed, it can quickly spiral out of control due to loss of form fees and such. I could tell how relieved my wife was when we even got the notification from USCIS that her permanent residency application was approved and to be expecting her acceptance interview and receiving the card.

John Oliver is a hero of mine; his deep dives into topics that often go unnoticed have compelled me to watch his show regularly. Additionally, no one hires a band to grieve the death of geckos, buys five wax statues of presidents, and mocks dictators around the world quite like he does.

I honestly wonder if it's one of the first times John has heard from someone else that he was to them, what Jon Stewart was to him.

John Oliver going to America to join the Daily Show ended up being an amazing move. Instead of being just another UK panel show comedian (with peace and love), he really found his calling with political satire. His show is so meticulously crafted. Funny and informative in equal parts. He was amazing as a Daily Show correspondent and killed it as the first temporary host. He's been a great gift to American political comedy.

he was fire as a political comedian back before he came over too! He cohosted a podcast with a fellow comedian called "The Bugle" and were so legit that they were fired from the Sun for how the covered the Sun's participation in the phone hacking scandal. He stayed on that podcast his entire time at the Daily Show, and I think up to or through his first season at HBO. his F*ckulogy for Bin Laden was amazing. Just amazingly funny stuff. I'm so glad he's here though. I just wanted to shamelessly plug the pod because Andy still has it going.

I take most UK panel shows over most American shows doing political satire though because for one words aren't bleeped out like on the Daily Show for example and two UK crowds don't laugh or clap every time its expected. There's no tradition of laughing at lame jokes or applauding at specific times with UK crowds. Just watch 8 Out of 10 Cats or Have I Got News For You and then compare it to the Daily Show or Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Jimmy Carr or the guest host isn't doing an opening monologue. No the guests get roasted first by the hosts and then the show starts. With The Daily Show the guests are treated like they are Albert Einstein even though most don't even have half the IQ that Albert Einstein had because that's been always been the American way since the birth of the American talk show format in the 1950s with Steve Allen and Jack Parr, to later Carson, Letterman, Conan, Kimmel, Stewart etc

I love how John helped Ronny get out of his near collapse, which started around 5:40. You could tell Ronny was nervous, & it got worse when he started bashing TikTok users. Then, John seamlessly changed the subject & got Ronny to talk about something he knew well & felt comfortable with - his monogram. John didn’t care about it - he was just helping his fellow comedian & knew it would calm Ronny’s nerves & help him shine. Love him!

What a duo! It’s great to see Ronnie actually have some reverence for once 😂😂 such a great interview. Smiling the whole time

...and we benefit from their different takes on the American circus, having not spent their entire lives immersed in U.S. culture.

Ronny Chieng is a natural interviewer! Conversational, laid back, actually responds to what the guests says without going on a tangent. Reminds me more of Jon Stewart and Seth Meyers’ conversational styles than Trevor Noah’s storytelling style. This dude’s gonna go far whether he gets the gig or not-John’s evidence of that! He filled in hosting TDS, got his own show without taking over this one, and succeeded so much.

It also heavily depends on where you're from. If you're from the UK or Malaysia, it's bad enough, like these guys said. But if you're from India or China, you will literally wait for decades to get a green card.

That’s very true. They didn’t take my hairdresser from England very long to get his green card nor did it take my friend from Costa Rica very long to get hers.@@MrVovansim

I’ve never seen “kind” Ronnie. This is awesome. And he has a lot of love and respect for John. This was a nice peek behind the curtain of his character. Love both of them even more.

I have never seen Ronnie so humble and actually star struck..lol

I have a feeling that Ronnie is the most in character as a correspondent. When is interviewing he is such a nice person that never gets to come out

really cool to see even as many people would think a guy like ronny has "made it", he's still looking for wisdom in every oppurtunity possible, really shows the work ethic it takes to get here

I immigrated with my family from Ireland when I was 3 years old in 1989 so I went through the entire American schooling system. I still had to take the English test as well as the citizenship test despite having earned a 5 on the AP United States History exam as well as both AP English exams and graduated with two Master's degrees from an American university. My older brother is a high school history teacher in America who used to give the citizenship test *in his classes* and he still had to take the citizenship test. To be honest, the worst part of my citizenship interview was, because I've grown up in America, I've absorbed the cynical attitude Americans have about the country. My interview was right before the 2016 election so I asked if I would eligible to vote in time. I was not so, forgetting where I was, I quipped, "Oh, I guess I'll vote in the next one if Trump will let me!" I immediately realized that I f*cked up so I started laughing nervously and insisting, "Just kidding!" to the stone-faced interviewer and her trainee. I had my naturalization ceremony only a few days after Trump won - I almost didn't go but I went and got naturalized. Now I vote in every. single. election.

I’ve had so many coworkers lose their H1B visas in the lottery system and get moved overseas. It’s gut wrenching. I wish the whole system would be reviewed and updated because it’s bonkers.

I honestly like Ronnie's longer bits more than his short. I know he's doing a bit but he's really insightful and genuine when his true self come through.

Ronnie looking like his been at that desk all his life. I say he should get the nod. He’s great.

I love how Ronnie just took this as a normal conversation with a friend

I'm glad they're talking about the greencard process. I've been in it for nine years. My mental heathl has never been worse. I think about going back quite a lot but I've built a life here, now.

Ronnie is just wonderful… love the sarcastic persona 😂

The way John as a mentor can guide the convo (the Tiktok comment to transition to the cufflinks) is so amazing. That is what is so cool about having a mentor, especially someone so compassionate.

This was nice. It felt like a conversation between two old friends that we just laugh at rather than an interview.

At the end John Oliver looked so awkward because he's not used to actually standing up from a desk and worrying about camera blocking that Ronnie had to swing him to the right direction like a dutiful son guiding his grandpa 😂

I got told to go back where I came from all the time growing up. I just say I’ll go back to Kansas

seeing Ronnie beaming like that, when John said "he's gonna be fine", was so endearing, I could say that it was the ultimate compliment at that moment for him, and has kind of ruined my enjoyment of him being a complete AH comedian 😂 ❤

John was SUCH A PRO when he saved Ronnie from that "how was it back in the day" bit that went totally off the rails

Going off the rails is half the fun in comedy interview segments. But yeah, John Oliver is a class act. A British dry humored, self deprecating class act. And I'm here for it.

I feel like this is less of an interview of Ronnie to John than it is both of these gentlemen interviewing each other and I am totally here for it. Especially when Ronnie turns the tables on John "check out this boomah!!!" 😅 🤣

I loved watching this. I knew it was difficult to become an immigrant the “right way”, but didn’t know just how difficult it was along the way. And of course they tell their stories with literally laugh out loud comedy. I’m elated they’re both here! You both obviously deserve to be here more than me. I was just born here and have No extraordinary talents. ❤

The banter here is just pure gold, more interviews like this!

I love how these two have both completely different and exactly the same energies at the same time. I want to see more of them interacting!

John is a brilliant interviewer, but also an incredibly talented guest.

The immigration process ….only an immigrant can relate. Well done Ronnie & John.

That was adorable. I love how they discussed their common challenges and how they highlighted how hard it is to “come in the right way”. People who say that have no awareness of what immigrants go through.

Great and hilarious interview! It’s true that it’s very difficult to come here. It takes luck and money - people don’t realize that. We tried 3 times ti save up money to board a dinky boat and were attacked by pirates 7-8 times before we landed in Thailand and had ti stay in refugee camps Neogen coming here. And we were able to come here bc we were considered political refugees and our country was at war; whereas my uncle had to stay at the refugee camp for 5 years bc he came a few years later and were considered economic refugees and therefore his escape was not as dire. 😢

Where I loved the hilarity of the Hasan/Ronny clip, this clip just made me smile like an idiot. Thank you awful people, for making me feel emotions.

This is such a great segment. As a fellow immigrant trying to do comedy here in this country, Im currently going through the process of unlearning what might by funny in my home country and learning the methods of American humor. Both John and Ronnie have successfully been through this process and are pure class for sharing their stories. Thank you both for paving the way for immigrants who may want to pursue a career in comedy in this country. Inspiring to see you both along with Trevor (another immigrant) on the Daily show.

Most Americans don't understand the struggle 😢 I have American friends and coworkers ask me about my status because I'm not a Citizen or a resident and they are so confused as to how I've been in this country for 30+yrs and cannot become a citizen. It just doesn't work that way.
