The issue with John selling his half meant that Primary Wave, who he was selling it to,could then use their music,videos,etc.. for anything. Darryl Hall’s voice and image could be used for things he doesn’t agree with, and he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. John Oates mentioned legal wrangling before he decided to sell, but there was no lawsuit until he attempted to sell his half. @@jaredjlinden evidently they had some agreement early on that one cannot sell without the others agreement or approval. And even with no agreement it would go to court and a judge would have to decide if one could sell 50% of partnership which could override the other partner.

If there’s an agreement that one partner has veto power over the sale to a third party, then Hall’s actions make sense. If there’s no clause in the partnership agreement, then Hall isn’t going to have much of a chance in court - legally Oates can sell without Hall’s approval. That’s the default without that clause.

@@jaredjlindenI'm guessing that there must be some clause in the partnership agreement preventing such a sale without the other's consent. Otherwise, a court would not have granted Hall's injunction.

I’ve seen divorcing couples sell a house and split the proceeds. Once it becomes legal, who can tell. This musical split is sad but Hall always seemed to be the face (and voice) of the group. I wish the two the best of luck.
Where’s the room for breakfast in this hotel? Well, you walk down the Hall turn right and eat your Oates !
I think in a dual company, you need to be in agreement if one wants to sell out. Wow I totally agree with his lawsuit.

@@gaynorpatterson2915 Yeah, it's a pretty bad sign (for eg.) that John and Tom never made amends before Tom died. They were BROTHERS, for God's sake! Damn.
John wants to cash out and Daryl doesn't. John apparently doesn't have the same concerns about it that Daryl does. I would think legally John doesn't have anything to stand on until the duo agrees. John's argument that "Daryl can have his own brand" does nothing to address their collective history and brand they built together.
Hate to see them fighting. I love their timeless and classic music. I still listen to their hits today. Love their version of: “Every Time You Go Away.” ❤️🎶🎶🎶
The gave us some wonderful music! Thanks guys!!
I’m happy that John provided clarity on their battle with one another. From what he voiced it sounds like they both want different things with their musical careers and it’s nothing wrong with that. I can respect that. I just hope that they can get through this being at least cordial with one another.

Not from court papers but from Daryl’s own lips.

It's money, yeah, but more so ownership of the rights to the music. Music that was created and owned "equally." As posted elsewhere, it's like deciding who gets custody of the dog. It's all or nothing.
The best duo ever, along with Steely Dan. Their music is the soundtrack of my wonder years ❤
Read John Oates' book. It's an eye opener. In the early days, they collaborated and were cool. Daryl has always had the bigger ego. This is no surprise as a fan but it's so sad! John has a great voice, loads of talent...yet he's always taken a back seat to Hall. God bless him for wanting to be a good person!
Oats in all respects. You just see and feel your older self. It’s respect. I will support your decision and music.
It is too bad , they are both sooo talented and their songs are really great..
I worked as a tour manager and PA for Daryl. John is a stand-up guy and Daryl is an AH. Sara warned me against him when I met them at his house in Millbrook NY. I knew Sara from when Daryl bought a property on Harbour Island in the Bahamas.
Graduated from the same High school as John , seen them in the 7 th grade when they first started blowin' up at that same school, worked a job mere blocks from the house he grew up in and he would always come back home to speak to the students, man this one hurts but what's that sayin' nothing is forever but we still love em' and are proud of both of em'.
You’d think that at their age, Hall would just tell the lawyers, let’s resolve this fairly and equitably and with love and mutual respect, and then toast to having been together 50 years and wish each other the best. But instead there’s ego-driven pettiness and unhappiness. Wild. Mo’ money, mo’ problems.

Something tells me there's more to the story than either will reveal. I think it was really telling that John Oates said that for the last 20 years or so, they would just show up and play the concerts and then go their separate ways. Things may have built up between them to the point that they no longer spoke to each other, and now there's a lawsuit.

@QuirkyGirl10 I thought so myself. I remember somebody told me 20 years ago, Hall and Oates didn't get along in real life, but enjoy making music together. Even the show Behind the Music from 25 years ago, I believe John explained they were never that closed to begin with. Daryl wouldn't admit that. He mentioned they got along real great and enjoying being together. I think the problem with those two, they couldn't come in terms of agreement. I believed Daryl accepted John more than John accepted him. The main issue is, Daryl has a huge ego problem and he probably didn't know it was affecting his relationship with John. John on the hand, was trying to get out of Daryl's shadow for a long time but couldn't. I think John don't get along with Daryl on the persona level and Daryl don't get along with John on the business side of things. That's what I'm reading about their relationship.

Daryl in another interview does explain the music business is akin to organised crime. Maybe thats a good reason for John to sell out his half. Let the music criminals fight over the royalties
You dont know someone until you live with that person, travel with that person, money is involved & name an album & a company after a cereal. The royalties alone💰
Question not asked …did he tell Daryl before he wanted to sell 😮
At their age they need to suck it up.

Then he should sell HIS solo catalog - how on earth can you sell off half of a duo w/o it screwing over the other party. IF John sells off his half, he's also selling off Darryl's half, i.e.: his image, his voice & his writing. That's just ridiculous. He should have asked Darryl to buy him out and then he's sole owner of his image too - John willing sells his to him. Also, the other have should have veto power based on the aforementioned, but if they can't or don't want to, should have a say in WHO buys the shares based on their intended usage etc. Its Darryl's life too - and with John's half goes Darryl's in effect.
Love you both! I really hope y’all work it out! ❤️
