It's just weird as hell and seems like a power move to try fucking over Daryl by forcing him to deal with who or whatever ends up buying John's half. It always sounds like he didn't offer Daryl the 1/2 that he was wanting to sell. That is an attack on Daryl. REminds me of MIchael Jackson getting Paul McCartney to write and perform with him all the while buying the Beatle's catalog out from under him.

The issue with John selling his half meant that Primary Wave, who he was selling it to,could then use their music,videos,etc.. for anything. Darryl Hall’s voice and image could be used for things he doesn’t agree with, and he wouldn’t be able to do anything about it. John Oates mentioned legal wrangling before he decided to sell, but there was no lawsuit until he attempted to sell his half. He called Darryl and told him he was going to do it,Darryl explained why he couldn’t allow it,and they argued. Both told that story before the lawsuit.

A partnership in music is just like a marriage, not all marriages survive. That's just part of of life. If you don't feel comfortable with echother anymore you go seperate ways. I had a great friend, we knew each other over 20 years but we drifeted apart.last couple of years of our friendship. Wanted different things out of life. Should we stay friends just because we have that past? Hell no! We are both much happier now actually, living our own lives.

@QuirkyGirl10 I thought so myself. I remember somebody told me 20 years ago, Hall and Oates didn't get along in real life, but enjoy making music together. Even the show Behind the Music from 25 years ago, I believe John explained they were never that closed to begin with. Daryl wouldn't admit that. He mentioned they got along real great and enjoying being together. I think the problem with those two, they couldn't come in terms of agreement. I believed Daryl accepted John more than John accepted him. The main issue is, Daryl has a huge ego problem and he probably didn't know it was affecting his relationship with John. John on the hand, was trying to get out of Daryl's shadow for a long time but couldn't. I think John don't get along with Daryl on the persona level and Daryl don't get along with John on the business side of things. That's what I'm reading about their relationship.

I doubt Hall has that kind of money. Katie Perry sold the rights to her 5 albums for $225 Million. And I'm pretty sure Hall and Oates have a lot more hits than her (not that I know a lot of Katy's music).

@@daveclark8337 Given their long history, I’m surprised they didn’t have a conversation or contract with provisions for something like this. The only ones benefitting from their legal dispute are the lawyers.

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I had no idea this is the way they worked. As a young girl in the 70 & 80's this my band. I love their music. 😢 So so sad.

Just saw Hall in concert in Vegas. There were sound issues and he seemed really irritated, like he was about to blow his top. I hope the guy is doing ok . . .

Then he should sell HIS solo catalog - how on earth can you sell off half of a duo w/o it screwing over the other party. IF John sells off his half, he's also selling off Darryl's half, i.e.: his image, his voice & his writing. That's just ridiculous. He should have asked Darryl to buy him out and then he's sole owner of his image too - John willing sells his to him. Also, the other have should have veto power based on the aforementioned, but if they can't or don't want to, should have a say in WHO buys the shares based on their intended usage etc. Its Darryl's life too - and with John's half goes Darryl's in effect.
